    Unit 9 Learning Lesson 1 Active Learning

    Active Learning

     

    Level: High School

     

    Objectives:

    To introduce the concept of active learning and its benefits.

    To provide examples of active learning strategies and activities.

    To encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and become more actively engaged in the classroom.

     

    Materials:

    Whiteboard and markers

    Handouts with examples of active learning strategies and activities

    Video clips demonstrating active learning in the classroom

     

    Procedure:

    Introduction

    Begin by introducing the topic of active learning and its benefits. Write the following question on the board and ask students to discuss it in pairs: "What does active learning mean to you?"

     

    After a few minutes, ask a few pairs to share their ideas with the class. Write their responses on the board.

     

    Explain that active learning is an approach to teaching and learning that encourages students to take an active role in their own learning. It involves engaging students in activities that require them to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate with others.

     

    Examples of Active Learning Strategies

    Distribute handouts with examples of active learning strategies and activities.

     

    Ask students to work in pairs to read through the handout and choose one example that they find interesting.

     

    After a few minutes, ask each pair to share their chosen example with the class and explain why they found it interesting.

     

    Write each example on the board as it is shared.

     

    Once all examples have been shared, discuss as a class which ones seem the most effective for promoting active learning.

     

    Demonstration of Active Learning

     

    Show video clips of teachers using active learning strategies in the classroom.

     

    After each clip, ask students to discuss in pairs what they noticed about the activity and what they think the benefits might be.

     

    After a few minutes, ask a few pairs to share their ideas with the class.

     

    Write their responses on the board.

     

    Encourage students to reflect on how they might apply some of these strategies in their own learning.

     

    Application of Active Learning

     

    Divide the class into small groups and give each group a specific topic related to the current unit.

     

    Ask each group to come up with an active learning activity that would help them learn more about their topic.

     

    After a few minutes, ask each group to share their activity with the class.

     

    Encourage the class to reflect on the benefits of each activity and discuss which ones they would like to try in the future.

     

    Conclusion

     

    Summarize the key points of the lesson and emphasize the importance of active learning.

     

    Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and to actively engage in the classroom.

     

    Remind students that active learning requires effort, but it can lead to deeper understanding and better retention of information.

     

    Exercise 1: Active Learning Reflection

     

    Instructions: Write a reflection about your experience with active learning in this lesson. Address the following questions:

     

    What active learning strategies did you find most effective?

    How did active learning help you learn?

    What did you learn about taking responsibility for your own learning?

    Answer:

     

    I found the strategy of dividing the class into small groups and giving each group a specific topic related to the current unit to be the most effective. This allowed us to engage in a collaborative learning experience that required us to think critically, solve problems, and learn from our peers.

     

    Active learning helped me learn by allowing me to take an active role in my own learning. I was able to engage with the material in a more meaningful way and develop a deeper understanding of the concepts. By participating in the activities, I was also able to retain the information better.

     

    I learned that taking responsibility for my own learning is essential to achieving academic success. By actively engaging in the classroom and seeking out opportunities to learn, I am able to develop a deeper understanding of the material and retain the information better. Active learning strategies provide a framework for me to take responsibility for my own learning and engage in a more meaningful way.

     

    Exercise 2: Active Learning Activity

     

    Instructions: Choose one of the active learning strategies discussed in class and create an activity that would help you learn more about a specific topic related to the current unit. Write a brief description of the activity.

     

    Answer:

     

    Active Learning Strategy: Divide the class into small groups and give each group a specific topic related to the current unit.

     

    Activity Description: In my group, we will research and present on the different forms of renewable energy. We will each be responsible for researching a specific form of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydroelectric, etc.) and preparing a short presentation on its advantages and disadvantages. We will then come together as a group to discuss and compare our findings, identifying which forms of renewable energy are most effective in different contexts. This activity will allow us to engage in collaborative learning and deepen our understanding of the different forms of renewable energy.

     

    Homework:

     

    Choose one of the active learning strategies discussed in class and write a reflection about how you could apply it in your own learning outside of the classroom. What benefits do you think this strategy could have?

     

    Take responsibility for your own learning by setting a goal related to the current unit and developing a plan to achieve that goal using active learning strategies. Write a brief reflection about your goal and plan, and how you plan to hold yourself accountable for achieving it.
