    A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus(微积分),but he can tell you how much pressure a boiler needs. He can’t draw an architect’s plan, but he can tell you if the pipes and wiring will sustain the structure. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked a slumber, an electrician, and a mechanic.
One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the comer was the most unusual doll-house I’d ever seen. It was shaped liked an upturned log(原木). Little oval windows decorated with nice curtains and framed by tiny balconies were cut into it.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me?”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag, silent — that’s a rather big figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, lifting up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim light, I made out a lot of wrapped boxes under the tree — but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad assured me.
And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I naively(幼稚地)thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was considerably more complex than I had anticipated. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the dark yellow electric light, Dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

Back in the early 1980s, the idea of home computers was catching on. I wasn't keen on getting one. Somehow, I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days, I loved my computer, but more often than not, I hated it. I didn't grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health. Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame: my children.
They weren't satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send e-mails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable; they insisted we learn to text as well. We couldn't get a break.
I remember well the night that Facebook became a household word around here. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us. It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on (激怒) their nerves considering the drama they'd sometimes created for us during their teenage years. A little payback wouldn't hurt those two.
More recently, my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones. I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine. I liked speaking to Siri and finding out what I needed to know in an instant. I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went. I felt a sense of accomplishment; my husband-not so much. To this day, he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last Christmas, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology-Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us programmed. Before we fully understood what was happening, we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off, and she would. To be honest, we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it. We mastered turning the lamp on and off, and once again I got the hang of it sooner than my husband did. I became his Alexa coach.

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly expected the great day of gift-giving.
Each day the children made some new wonders-strings of popcorn, hand-made decorations, and German bells made from wallpaper samples, which we hung from the ceiling. Through it all she stayed indifferent, watching from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what would happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now so suddenly unsociable. I hoped the celebrations would light her up. But nothing did. We made cards and gifts for mothers and dads, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子) and competed with one another to bring in the prettiest ones. As my gift to them, I made each of my students a little bag for carrying their fried marbles. And I knew they had each made something special for me.
The day of gift giving finally came. We oohed and aahed over our handwork as the presents were exchanged. But she sat quietly watching. I had made a special bag for her, red and green with white lace, hoping very much to see her smile. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she turned away. I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had built around herself.
After school the children left in little groups, but she hesitated, watching them go out of the door. I sat down in a child-sized chair to catch my breath, hardly knowing what was happening when she came to me reaching out her hands, holding a small white box unwrapped and slightly soiled, as though it had been held many times by unwashed, childish hands. She said nothing.

Sarah grew up in West Virginia as a normal American girl. Jim, a professor at WVU, and Judy, a teacher, showered their youngest daughter with love and encouragement. Sarah picked roses in her garden, rode her bike around the neighborhood, and enjoyed vacations with her parents and two sisters. Sil, she could never quite shake off the sense that she didn’t belong in her fair-haired family or the community with few minorities. Worse, she felt the anxiety shared by many adopted children: if one set of parents abandoned you, why wouldn't another? She tried very hard to be a good kid so that her present parents would never want to give her up. This feeling kept haunting her all through her childhood and teen years.
Sarah studied drama and in 2001 got some minor roles in films after graduation. She moved to California to pursue her career. It was then that she felt the urge to find her birth parents. She hired a private detective, who, after some investigation, found that her biological mother was long dead, and her father was then an exchange student from the Mende tribe in Sierra Leone, an African country on the Atlantic coast. In fact, her father, Kposowa, belonged to the ruling family, which made Sarah a princess in her father’s tribe.
But she leaned through the news that a brutal civil war had been raging in Sierra Leone, and her native county was let in ruins. Sarah also noticed that the local news in Sierra Lcone made no mention of her father as the head of Mende tribe, and she couldn’t help wondering if her inquiry was too late. But she sent a letter anyway, with her contact information, hoping it would somehow reach her biological father half way across the globe. To drown her doubts and regrets, she threw herself into her acting and was on the fast track to success, the letter to her father half forgotten amid actress’s life.

He woke suddenly and completely. It was 4 a. m. at Christmas, the hour when his father had always called him to get up and help with milking the cow. Strange how the habit of his youth was with him still, even his father had been dead for 40 years. The magic of Christmas for him was a long childhood past, and he was wondering why he felt so awake when his mind went back to his teenage years.
He was 15 years old then and still on his father’s farm. A few days before Christmas, he heard what his father was saying to his mother.
“Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast, and he needs his sleep. I could manage alone.”
“Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother replied. “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time to take his turn.”
When he heard these words, something in him woke: his father loved him so much as had never been thought before. Now that he knew so, there would be no more lying in the mornings waiting to be called. He got up and pulled on his clothes.
On the night before Christmas, he lay thinking about the next day. They were poor, and most of the excitement was in the turkey raised themselves and the mince pies made by his mother. His sisters made presents, and he always saved and bought something for parents.
However, he wished, that Christmas he was fifteen, and that he had a better present for his father than before. He looked out of the window and saw Dad working in a stable. Then a thought struck him: why should he not give his father a special gift out there in the stable? He could get up earlier, quietly go into it and get all the milking done. Then when his father went in to start the milking, he’d see it all done.

For twelve years, Grandma ages enjoyed the c or up any of her dog, Snoopy. The black and white spotted must was a constant presence in her home and her yard. During the time that she had Snoopy, Grandma Agnes started showing signs of dementia. My family worked together to keep her living independently but safe.
It was difficult for my dad the day he pulled the battery from her car to keep her from using her still valid driver's license, Every visit after that day, Grandma Agnes would insist that he buy her a new car battery because hers was dead again. Dad nodded and agreed to do it, knowing that the conversation would soon be forgotten.
Three years ago. Snoopy passed away, My dad. Aunt Carol and Uncle Ed thought of ways to ensure that Grandma Agnes would know that Snoopy was gone, They had burial service in the back yard with Grandma. Uncle Ed printed a picture of Snoopy with “Rest in Peace” written across the bottom and stuck it to the refrigerator, But on the daily visits. Grandma Agnes still asked about Snoopy, She accused the neighbors of taking her dog because she was sure that she heard bin barking from their yard.
Having a family member with dementia is heartbreaking and trying. For every visit I've made in the past five years, my dad has made a point to tell me that she probably won't remember who I am nor that my kids are her great grandchildren, I've sat through conversations where we patiently repeated answers to questions that were answered a few moment sago. It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic (疫情).
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop. I resisted the urge to check on her. Way too often, Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
"Mom, everyone is hanging out today!" Micah's voice came from upstairs. "Why can't I?"
I went up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas(睡衣), her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. "It's not fair," she said. I have no one I can be with. I can't wait until I'm 18 and can do what I want."
We'd had this conversation before. Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of having to stay at home too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds. "Wanna watch TV later?" I asked. "No, thanks." Micah shook her head.
"In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,'' I added "That's something you can look forward to." I closed the door. I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.

    2. I hesitated, wondering if I should help my father. “Then we’ll make one together,” he told me. First, Dad cut leftover board into strips and nailed them in a circle on a wood base, showing me how to make the rough edges smooth. Then he sawed the base in half and attached hinges to one side so the “log” would swing open and shut. He gathered pieces of wallpaper, matching patterns as carefully. He painted the outside with shades of brown, and added a tiny path to the front door--made from real concrete.
In all, it took us one month of hard work. But the log house was the greatest gift a child could ask for. Long after I gave up playing with dolls, I would still sometimes bring it down from the upper floor just to admire it and remember those months I watched Dad bring my dream to life. Dad has spent his life creating, mending and improving the most valued parts of mine. He’s given me the greatest treasure a father can give.

I just needed to tell Alex to set the light color to white or whatever color I wanted, and then it would turn on the light. Then Alex turned on the light itself.
We should thank our children and grandchildren. It was our children and grandchildren that taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself. Without them, our life is always invariable and boring. Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, which seems to put us under pressure. 4.“For me?” I asked with a weak smile. She said nothing, nodding her head. I took the box and carefully opened it. There inside, lay a golden chain. An idea suddenly occurred to me—she had made it for her mother, who would never again hold her or brush her hair or share a funny story. We couldn’t see any smile on her face after her mother passed away three weeks before. I stood there, not knowing how to comfort her well.
I carefully held out the chain. She took it, putting it on at the back of my neck. She stepped back as if to see whether all was well. I looked down at the golden chain, then back at her, “Maria, it is so beautiful. She would have loved it.” Neither of us could stop the tears. 5.Then, one day, her cell phone suddenly rang out, showing an African number. Sarah’s heart missed a beat, and she quickly found a quiet corner to answer the call. The caller identified himself as Kposowa Halily, her birth father, and in between sobs, begged Sarah to forgive him for giving her up for adoption. He explained that he was called back to take over the tribe and there was no way he could take Sarah and her mum along. He told Sarah he had handed over the tribe affairs to his brother and was running a school for children orphaned by the war. He invited Sarah to come over and visit.
Sarah talked it over with her American parents, who encouraged her to go and find her roots. That December, after a 20-hour flight, Sarah landed at a tiny airport near Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital. The man coming to pick her up in an old Toyota was a far cry from the royal figure she had imagined. But one glance at the loving, wrinkled face melted years of bitterness and sent her flying into the open arms of her long-lost father. Sarah never regretted going back to Africa, where she found her roots and her mission to help the homeless kids in her father’s mud-hut school.

    6.Para 1:
He must have woken twenty times in the night, looking at his watch for a proper time to start. It was at a quarter to three when he got up and went out, careful of an occasional sound. The cows in the stable looked at him, sleepy and surprised. It was early for them, too, but they accepted him calmly for milking. He had never milked before, but it seemed easy for him, with the cows behaving well. Eventually the task, a special gift for father, went more easily than supposed, and with two full milk cans, he left the stable silently and went back to his bedroom.
    Para 2:
He went back in his bedroom with only one minute to jump into bed before hearing his father get up. He covered his head to silence his breath of excitement. His father came in, “Rob! We have to get up and get everything started.” “All right…” he replied sleepily. Yet he lay still, his dancing heart beating violently out from his body when the door opened again. His father came in with a crying laugh, pulling away his cover, “you thought you’d fool me, did you?” “It’s for Christmas, Dad!” He happily replied. Dark as it was outside, he could feel two great arms around him, a hug to recognize his growth.

    7.Para 1:
A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for Grandma Agnes. It has soft fur and barks when it senses motion nearby. Grandma quickly adopted the dog as her new Snoopy. Her condition has led her to believe that he is an animal and not a robot. She got used to Snoopy's barks and regarded them as requests for food or a nap. The food disappearing every night helped convince Grandma that Snoopy was a real dog. We found from the camera that the neighbor cat climbed over the fence and ate all the dog food.
    Para 2:
Everyone in our family is pleased that Grandma Agnes has been so kind to Snoopy. She would pet him gently and carefully prepare food and water for him. Once, when the dog didn't move, eat and bark, she anxiously phoned Uncle Ed. She was afraid Snoopy was ill, Uncle Ed found he just needed changing battery. Our family is grateful that the robotic dog has brought Grandma Agnes companionship and someone to love. It's beautiful that her love of dogs can continue through this time in her life.

8.That evening. I was surfing online and saw a friend’s children playing with their new cat. An idea hit me. “Why not get her a pet?” I thought to myself. Acting on a sudden inspiration, I logged in a pet shelter website and went straight to Micah’s room. "Sweetie, I've got a surprise for you." I showed her the pictures of those cats that she could adopt. With her mouth wide opening, she simply couldn’t take her eyes off those cute creatures. Finally she pointed to a baby cat with yellow spots on the head.
“This is the one I want "she said, smiling. We paid online and the next day the little angel was delivered to our house. Micah gently scooped it up into her arms and planted her face into the soft fur and then Micah smiled at me with a tender look, "thank you, mum." A huge wave of warmth flooded all over my body and it seemed like a wall between us torn down. My silence drew her attention and she looked at me again, throwing herself in my arms. “I love you, mum.”
