    A Happy Day at School
It was a most trying period. Things at home were getting from bad to worse. Dad's alcoholism had become worse, especially after he ran out of money. Mum was always losing temper as she could not make ends meet with her poor income as a factory operator. I had been an above-average student, but now I was doing poorly in school.
I dreaded coming home after school. Dad would come home late and shout abuse at Mum. When he fell asleep, I would often hear Mum's sobs. I could do nothing to ease the situation at home and this realization caused me a great deal of suffering and frustration.
It was at this point that Mrs. Justin entered my life. A soft-spoken woman in her late forties, she was my class teacher. She was quick to notice the change that had come over me. One day, during break, I was standing alone in one corner of the canteen when Mrs. Justin spotted me. She gestured for me to follow her. We headed for the library, where she asked me to take a seat next to her. I sat with my head bent.
“Helen”, she called. I lifted my head and looked at her. I saw the warmth, and the love in her lovely eyes. Tears welled up in my eyes and I tried my best to hold them back. However, I could not. She held my hands and waited. When I had finished, she asked me to tell her my problem. I told her the whole story and she listened patiently.
At the end of my story, she gave me a lesson on life. As I heard her talk, my admiration for this woman grew. My perception changed. Before this meeting, I had felt I was nobody. However, as the meeting progressed, I felt different. I knew Mrs. Justin cared for me.

Algebra (代数) was my last class of the day. After the class, Mrs. Sharpnack asked me to stay to discuss my midterm math exam, which I had failed. Although I did well in language and many other subjects, I wouldn’t be on the honor roll (光荣榜) that term if I couldn’t soon make big progress in math. In just a few weeks, the names of the honor roll students would be read during the class. I was so sad.
Seeing my sadness, Mrs. Sharpnack said, “Do you want me to spare some time to help with your math? I think you can make big and quick progress.” But I just wanted to go home and never think about algebra again. “No, thanks,” I said. And I explained, “Unlike other students in my class, I am just not good at this kind of math. And no amount of studying will change that.”
I almost cried when I talked about it. Mrs. Sharpnack comforted me, saying, “If we work together, I believe you can change it.” For a moment, I wondered if she would be right. “What time does your bus come?” she asked. I had 30 minutes left before my bus came, and I told her so. She asked if I would like to use that time to go over the math problems I had met. Encouraged by her, I answered. “I guess so.”
We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs. Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.

What's the saddest moment you can think about in your life right now? I know mine. That day was one of the saddest days of my life. It was a Sunday in the year of 2020. I arrived at my class that morning. As soon as I walked in, the mood immediately felt depressing and uncomfortable. I knew exactly why the mood felt this way. The classmates around me were controlling their sadness. Today was the day when our head teacher would leave and move to another school. Mr. Smith was finally leaving our school after five years teaching here.
Mr. Smith was an extremely likable guy. He was very easy to talk with and to have fun with. He was cool, relaxed, and was always friendly when you would see him. He watched us grow up. He taught us knowledge and to love others. I couldn't even imagine how things were going to be without him. These thoughts flooded my mind, and I became discouraged.
“Hey, are you alright?” My friend interrupted my thinking.
“Yeah, I'm alright. I'm just kind of sad that Mr. Smith's leaving,” I replied.
“Yeah, me too. I had so many good times with him when I was younger.”
“I wish he were our teacher forever,” as I sighed, all happy moments flooded my mind.
“Hey, can you stop talking please?” my deskmate politely asked.
My friend quickly leaned back to his spot, and I began to think again.
“Thank you everyone for my times here. I will forever keep these memories and friend-ships I've made in the past five years.” He took a deep breath and announced, “As a gift for my leaving, please look under your seats.”
Confused, I slowly checked under my seat to see a yellow block of wood that read “LOVE” on it. I quickly grabbed it and began to study it. After seconds of analyzing this strange rectangle, I realized that it was a Jenga block (积木块).
    注意:
    1. 续写的词数应为150左右;

When I was ten years old, I was a grade four primary school student in a small town. I had a happy time at school because I had a few good friends there. We usually spent our spare time together, doing our homework, going to the amusement park, playing with our pets, and sharing our happiness and sorrows together. But everything changed when my parents decided to change their jobs and moved to a bigger city. I even had no time to say good-bye to my old friends and teachers.
As I moved to the new city, I began my school life in a totally new school with new surroundings, new teachers and new classmates. During the first week, I felt lonely when I was at school. My classmates knew each other, but they didn’t know me, which added to my loneliness and sadness. That week day after day, I was sitting on my seat, pretending to be reading. How I secretly wished that someone would come to me and introduce himself to me or even play a trick on me, but disappointingly, nobody came.
Then one day, when my parents sent me to the bus station and said good bye to me, I didn’t get on the bus to school as usual. Instead, I walked and walked on the street, looking at the beautiful window displays and forgetting everything, with no worry about the new school, new teachers and new classmates. Then my empty stomach stopped me and I used my pocket money to have a bowl of noodles in a small restaurant. It was noon at the time, but still I didn’t want to go to school or go home. So I went to a park and sat on the bench, staring at the sky. And then I had a nap. When I woke up, I decided to go back to my hometown, where my former teachers and friends lived. So I went to the railway station. There I was stopped by a policeman, who asked for my ID card, which I didn’t have at the time. Then the policeman called someone and I was asked to stay with him.

The Principal and the Popcorn Popper
Spring was approaching. Principal (校长)Peters was wandering in the empty part of the huge school yard when the students' request flashed through his mind again. It couldn't be better to eat the cabbages, carrots, or eggplants planted by themselves. But how to raise money for seeds and tools?
The topic came up at the teachers' meeting. Teachers suggested various means of collecting money with enthusiasm; one teacher suggested, “We have a popcorn popper (爆米 花机)in the teachers' lounge (休息室).How about kids making popcorn to sell?”
When the popcorn proposal reached the students, they jumped with joy. Agreement was reached -every Thursday, in their labor course, by selling popcorn for 25 cents a bag, they could enjoy a snack while raising money to buy seeds and tools for their garden.
Soon the first Thursday came. Principal Peters got to his office as usual just right next to the teachers' lounge. Hearing popping sound, he smiled, for it meant the promise of the potential garden. But it was REALLY loud. He wrapped a scarf around his head to block his ears. When the first Thursday was over, he breathed a sigh of relief. But the next Thursday, popping sound happened again. This time, he had brought earplugs. The day, it seemed, would last forever. But for the kids' garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
The following Thursdays witnessed Principal Peters attempting to pile gym mats against his office walls and asking the fifth grade to practice for their concert in the hallway outside his office. The "unbearable" popping sound seemed to have taken root in his head! But for the kids' vegetable garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
On the 11th Thursday, he went to the teachers' lounge again to see how much money was still needed. Seeing the Principal coming with a hard-hidden painful expression, the students responded cheerfully, “Only with 41 dollars our garden dream will come true.” Hearing this, Principal Peters left without saying anything.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned "secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉).The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible," I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间),tears streaming down her face.

The whole class burst out laughing as John rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were too big in size. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
John murmured, “Sorry, teacher,” and quickly stepped to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. John’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by John’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.
John lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. Although John was adorable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Harry, who sat next to John, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, John did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Harry decided to walk over to John’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. John must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Harry let himself in. He called John’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Harry peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, John was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Harry left quietly.

When I lived in Portland, Oregon, I taught English as a Second Language at a local community college. I had adult students in my class from Vietnam, Mexico, Russia and many other countries. Although they came from many lands, fighting for a better life, they had one thing in common: a desperate yearning (渴望) to learn English well.
Many of the students worked in a factory for twelve hours throughout the night and hurriedly took a bus in the morning straight to our 8:00 A.M. class. They attended my class on time whatever the weather. And they waited until after class to go home and sleep. Sometime I would see them struggling to keep their eyes open in the beginning. However, their active participation in class drove away their physical tiredness as well as livened up the atmosphere. Some students even raised a bunch of questions by gesture after class. They were always there working hard, earnest and eager to learn.
Despite their lack of sleep and long hours at work, the level of attendance and attentiveness in class was always excellent. No one called in sick. No one was absent-minded. Some of the students had as many as three jobs and took the bus everywhere they went because they couldn’t afford cars.
To teach the course, I needed to use a lot of pictures and hand gestures, since I didn’t know all their respective languages. One of the things I taught was a simple dialogue called “Shopping for a New Coat”. They enjoyed standing up and acting out the gestures that accompanied the text of the story.
Sometimes I wondered if I was really teaching my students in the best way possible. But I gave my all to this class, and they gave their all to me. If nothing else, they would always remember what to say if they ever went “shopping for a new coat”. Soon, the language course came to an end.

The Jenga block was freshly painted bright yellow. I immediately felt sadness and I began to tear up. I glanced over to my friend to see him crying and noticed that his Jenga block was very different from mine. Curiosity quickly became my objective as I looked around me to see that everyone's Jenga block was different. Some had different designs, colors, pat-terms, but all had the word “LOVE” written in some way. “This is a reminder to always love others,” Mr. Smith said slowly.
Reflecting on this moment today, maybe that day wasn't the worst day after all. I keep these memories to myself, especially the word “LOVE”, which became my ultimate lifestyle and taught me how I lived everyday. The more I grew up, the more I understood why loving others was so important. I've gotten most of my friends this way and people respect me more as a person. To this day, the Jenga block sits on the top of my computer desk as a reminder to love others.

But next time you meet any problems, turn to us first.” Hearing this, though a little bit upset, I felt better with my parents’ comfort.

Instead when the class began, the teacher told the whole class that I was permitted a day off to hang around the city the day before and asked me to share what I’d seen. You’ ve reached your garden goal!” Seeing the exact amount of money to realize the garden dream, all the students present burst into cheers.“For $41, you have just bought 164 bags of popcorn, we’ll pop it for you right now,” said one of the kids, eyes dancing with joy. However, Principal Peters shook his head, saying, “Thanks, but no need, I’ m proud of you for your persistence! But may I ask what you will plant? Cabbages? Carrots or eggplants?”
“POPCORN”, the cute students answered the Principal’ s question jokingly. Following the students’ unexpected response, a stunned look froze on the principal’ s face. After all, how could popcorn be planted? Immediately, he got the point of students’joke. Forehead knotting in a frown, he pretended to be angry but joy sparkled inside him. He grinned at the cute studcnts childishly, saying proudly and encouragingly,“You guys have done an amazing job! As long as you try enough, everything you want will come its way.” Together, they pictured a promising plant garden of their own.

    6.Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! “Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.
    Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

    8. On the last day of class, they threw a wonderful party that was filled with good food and laughter. I was amazed that they had learned enough English to even coordinate such an event with each other. The food was delicious, with wonderful dishes from over ten different countries. Then, Alexander from Hungary, one of the most outgoing members of the class, called everyone’s attention before he proudly handed me a large, neatly wrapped if box. After the ribbon was untied and the top was off, I gently pulled back the wrapping paper.
I lifted from the box a beautiful, new, full-length coat. “We went shopping for a new coat!” they all exclaimed in wonderfully perfect English. These were people who lived in small apartments, sent money back to families in their home countries and barely could make ends meet. I was simply doing my job, teaching English, and their gratitude was beyond the bounds of what I ever could possibly have expected. I wear the coat they gave me with pride and gratitude; it’s my favorite. Every time I wear the coat, I think fondly of them—all of them and their desire and struggle to start a new life in America.
