Her heart wasn't benefiting her anymore, but she found out that there was a way to live longer: an IVAD．It is a heart pump （起搏器）that replaces the heart, basically, a battery instead of a heart and it's connected to a battery pack by a tube that conies out of the side. Grandma would become a robot with no heart! The Toledo Hospital, the only hospital near us that could do this surgery, offered to do it for Grandma. She, obviously, agreed.
The grey morning of the surgery was rough for our family, as we woke up bright and early to drive to the hospital. That car ride left me with worried thoughts racing through my mind: Will Grandma be okay? Will we ever take another walk around the block?
When we arrived at the hospital, we knew exactly where to go, as we'd been there many times before. After going through those familiar doors and up the stairs, my mom and I walked up to the nurses' desk and asked for Grandma.
“Oh, Mary?” A nurse answered. "She's one of the nicest patients we've had." Then she directed us to the waiting room and told us that only two of us were permitted to go into the ward （病房）at a time to say goodbye to Grandma before she went in for surgery.

The rosebushes were finally in full bloom that day. Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda's childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were a luxury. "We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish," Wanda said.
Nowadays, to have a backyard filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment. Wanda especially loves the very first blooms. Her husband, Dale, devotedly tends the roses and knows this little fact about his wife. So, on this particular morning, he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden, just for Wanda.
But as Dale came back, he was met by a neighbor who had dropped by. As the woman turned to go, Dale graciously (有风度地)handed the roses to her. Even though their visitor insisted she didn't want to take them, she was repeatedly assured that the flowers were hers to keep.
“I told her I was happy for her to keep them, but I really wasn't," Wanda said, recalling the emotions she was feeling right then. Seeing her very precious first blooms go out of the door filled her with regret.
Throughout the rest of the morning, Wanda argued with herself, knowing logically it was “better to give than to receive. Nevertheless, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.
Later that day, the couple just arrived at the post office, where they were about to park the car.

Alf knows us very well and recognizes both our voices. He does not roll into a ball or put his spines up. Every day he allows us to pat him. He loves playing with paper and towels and will bite and tug on the bed sheets if given a chance. Like all pets, Alf loves his treats, in particular small pieces of sugar-coated biscuits.
Unfortunately, in April 2014, I was in a car accident and had to spend two months in the hospital. And boy, did I miss Alf! Reece told me that Alf would search around the house for me, checking in places where I'd normally be, such as my desk, my favorite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.

After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing (折磨)me.
Miserable doesn't even begin to describe how I felt. And there was pain, so much pain that I was on the verge of breakdown.
"You'll be fine. You've got less than a kilometer to go," Charles shouted loudly.

Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan. But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl’s past In an instant, I came to respect this warmhearted woman who had opened her home to a younger girl and tied hard to make a difference in her life.

He walked towards it quietly, and found it was a small hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. Reece quickly removed his jacket and picked it up.
