Kindness Is Precious
The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with tiny pieces of red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. “Oh, no, not the vase,”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America.” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment. I would have gladly said I did it. But you’ re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Would her mom yell at me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn’t stop playing those fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry, ”
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’ s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt(酸奶) I know you like. Let’s go! ” her mom said, She pointed at the open door.
“But before that. I need to tell you something,” I said.
“We can talk at the yogurt place,” her mom said.
“No. I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry.

When she got home that night with tears in her eyes, Fiona turned to her mother for help. She asked her mother where she could find true friends.

If Jessica went somewhere, Heather and I went there too. I found I was behaving as a pretended version of myself just to please Jessica and to keep her from being mad at me.
Then, summer came. Jessica invited Heather and me to go to Cape Cod with her. I decided to go to Florida with another friend instead, so Jessica got angry. I went to Florida and didn't hear from her.

Still I’d seen other families where children didn’t look alike, so I didn’t give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.
An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.
After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.

On the way home, Shanti saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. She was late because she had to watch Kiran while her mother was away.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs.”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now.The market would be closing soon.
Shanti looked at the purse tightly held in her hand. It was supposed to be for the beautiful doll she’d been dreaming of for long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here. Keep this for the medicine.”
That night Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again?

Cyclops whirred (呼呼地响), carrying notes between Kyle and Max. They discovered they would be in Mrs. Parker’ fifth grade class next year. They both loved riding bikes and playing baseball but hated strawberry jam.
Kyle sent three cookies and a note down. Cyclops ran between the windows as Kyle and Max made crucial decisions, like how to go to the zoo, when and where to meet. “Feel like going to the zoo tomorrow? Zzzooop! “OK.”

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,”and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
