    Kindness Is Precious
The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with tiny pieces of red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. “Oh, no, not the vase,”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America.” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment. I would have gladly said I did it. But you’ re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Would her mom yell at me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn’t stop playing those fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry, ”
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’ s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt(酸奶) I know you like. Let’s go! ” her mom said, She pointed at the open door.
“But before that. I need to tell you something,” I said.
“We can talk at the yogurt place,” her mom said.
“No. I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry.

Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at school. She was clever and fun, and got on well with everyone. It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl, with so many friends, that she hardly got a chance to spend time with individual friends. However, she felt very lucky; no other girl had so many friends at school and in the neighborhood.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting, and giving gifts. That day in class everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her friends.
However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who didn't receive a present! She felt upset, and spent hours crying. How could it be that? So much effort had been made to make so many friends, but in the end no one saw her as their best friend. Everyone came and tried to comfort her. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving.
This was exactly what Fiona had done so many times to others.
She realized that she was a good companion (伙伴),but she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone, and had tried to pay attention to everyone, but now she found out that it was not enough to create true friendship.
When she got home that night with tears in her eyes, Fiona turned to her mother for help. She asked her mother where she could find true friends.

When most people look back on middle school, they remember their best friends, and so do I. But what I remember may be a little different. Let me explain.
My heart was pounding when I climbed onto the school bus on the first day of middle school. As I was looking for a seat, my eyes landed on two girls sitting together. They smiled at me and pointed to the seat next to theirs.
I sat down and we chatted. They were Heather and Jessica. It turned out that we had the first period together and we became friends. We ate lunch together, hung out in the park and played games in Jessica's room on weekends. But our friendship wasn't without its faults. Jessica had an "I'm-the-boss" personality. She always had to be in charge.
One time, the three of us went to the mall. I wanted to go to Abercrombie. But Jessica rolled her eyes and told me to go to Rave. Not wanting to argue, I followed her.
This skirt would look great on you. "Jessica exclaimed. "Try it on!"
    "I don't like it," I said.
Jessica gave me a death glare so I made my way to the dressing room.
I ended up spending fifty dollars on a skirt that I didn't even like, just to make Jessica happy. Throughout the following year, this was how it was. If Jessica went somewhere, Heather and I went there too. I found I was behaving as a pretended version of myself just to please Jessica and to keep her from being mad at me.
Then, summer came. Jessica invited Heather and me to go to Cape Cod with her. I decided to go to Florida with another friend instead, so Jessica got angry. I went to Florida and didn't hear from her.

This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca(卡萨布兰卡). My friend Mike and I were going to visit Abdel, a young man we’d worked with on a volunteer project in Kenitra, an industrial city on the Moroccan(摩洛哥) coast. He’d been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a few days now, and since he had no telephone, he’d written down his address and name and told us to just show up-his mother and Sisters were always at home.
Apparently the address he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand. When we got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions. Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a winding road. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel’s sister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us where they lived.
Soon a girl of about sixteen emerged from the house. Surprisingly, she didn’t look like Abdel at all. Still I’d seen other families where children didn’t look alike, so I didn’t give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.
An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.
After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.

Shanti wanted the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop and told her best friend, Jodi about it. Jodi wondered if she could afford it.
Shanti smiled. “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands(花环) and sell them at my aunt’s stand in the market.” Jodi thought it was a good idea.
Early the next morning, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside Shanti’s house. Delicate white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked blossoms with their fingers and then sat under a mango tree, tying up the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll.” said Shanti.
Jodi shook her head. Her family was low on money that week. She had to use her money to pay for Kiran’s medicine. Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. Then Jodi picked up her garlands.“My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market.”
Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands alone. By early evening, Shanti had sold all her flowers.
On the way home, Shanti saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. She was late because she had to watch Kiran while her mother was away.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs.”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now.The market would be closing soon.
Shanti looked at the purse tightly held in her hand. It was supposed to be for the beautiful doll she’d been dreaming of for long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here. Keep this for the medicine.”
That night Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again?

    Jack was gone.
For six years, Jack had lived four floors directly below him. If it hadn’t been for the fire escape, the two best friends could have seen each other by sticking their heads out of their bedroom windows.
Every summer had been filled with bike rides and baseball, but last summer—the summer of Cyclops—had been the best.
Kyle and Jack had created the pulley contraption (滑轮), which Jack named Cyclops, from old bicycles, a backpack and a long rope. It ran beside the fire escape, and anything that fit into the pack could be slid from Kyle to Jack and back again. Cyclops had exchanged messages, comics and even chocolate cookies between windows.
Three days ago, Jack said good-bye to Kyle, saying his family was moving. Cyclops’ backpack rested on the fire escape outside Jack’s empty bedroom.
Staring at the ceiling over his bed, Kyle felt sad and lonely. Zzzoop! Kyle ran to the window, only to find Cyclops rushing toward him. ‘‘Jack?” he shouted. Kyle opened the backpack and found a note “This is cool. Did you make it?” Disappointed, he threw the note away and closed the window, muttering (咕哝着) to the faceless stranger in Jack’s room, “Forget it.”
Minutes later, Kyle ran his eyes over Cyclops. Having read one page of his favorite comic, he looked at it again. He wrote a note. “Who are you?” Zzzooop! “I’m Max.” “I’m Kyle. How old are you?”
Cyclops whirred (呼呼地响), carrying notes between Kyle and Max. They discovered they would be in Mrs. Parker’ fifth grade class next year. They both loved riding bikes and playing baseball but hated strawberry jam.
Kyle sent three cookies and a note down. Cyclops ran between the windows as Kyle and Max made crucial decisions, like how to go to the zoo, when and where to meet. “Feel like going to the zoo tomorrow? Zzzooop! “OK.”
Para. 1: Early the next morning, Kyle got ready and his mom smilingly held the door open.

Midde school is a tough time for almost everyone. Most kids are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. It too me some time to realize that I wanted to be kind more than I wanted to be popular.
I was talking to some friends while standing in line in the cafeteria at my middle school. As I started to share a funny story, my friend Elizabeth interrupted me. “Coco! Coco!” She called out. All my friends laughed. This was so strange, I thought.
Over the next week, every time I opened my mouth around Elizabeth, she interrupted me with that same word. Elizabeth was one of the girls that everyone wanted to be friends with. She always had the nicest clothes and told the funniest jokes. I felt lucky to be friends with her. I didn’t want to be left out, so I started using the word too. Elizabeth thought it was funny when I interrupted someone else’s story with our new code word. And since I wanted her to like me, I did it even more, even though I wasn’t sure what it meant.
One day after school, Sara, a classmate since primary school, stopped by my desk and asked, “Julia, do you know why Elizabeth started saying ‘Coco’ all the time?”
    I shook my head.
Sara sighed. “It means she thinks you’re being annoying. A few days ago, she told us that you were bothering her when you told stories. She wanted a code word without you knowing she was talking about you. I know it’s really mean, and the rest of us shouldn’t have gone along with it. I’m really sorry.”

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,”and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response.

1.“What is it, dear?” her mom asked, still wearing a big smile. “I am sure you are not going to enjoy this, but I broke your vase, the priceless family heirloom.” I said, my eyes dropping and my voice trembling. Her mom stood there motionlessly and for a moment I could hear her mom’s trembling breath. It was then that her mom turned around and looked directly into my eyes, saying, “is it really you who broke the glass vase just now?” I nodded in fear and stuttered, “I kept spinning around and knocked it over! What do you say if I compensate you for this? It’s all my fault, Missi stopped me…”
Her mom looked at me, expressionless, and then she laughed and thanked me. I felt shocked. Then her mom turned to Missi and said, “Honey, you are blessed to have a friend like Abby, who is responsible and honest. That glass vase is pricy. But what is even more precious lies in her heart. You remember the vase flung to the ground by our cat some days ago? The cat could have been made the scapegoat for this. Instead, Abby honestly admitted her fault. You are taught a lesson today.” I let out a sigh of relief and looked at Missi, who giggled at me and said, “See? It is my mum’s type to lecture you all the time.” I turned to her mom and said, “Thanks for your praise. I learned a lesson as well.”

Then Abdel exclaimed heartily, “It doesn’t matter at all.” After hearing our story, he asked us to show them the address.
I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me back in Kenitra and showed it to the new Abdel. “This is Baalal Abdel!” said the second Abdel. “We went to school together! He lives less than a kilometer from here. I will bring you to his house.” After taking photos and exchanging addresses with the family, we hugged good-bye. 5.The next week, while Shanti and Jodi gathered blossoms, Kiran came, too. The medicine had cured his cough, and he helped them sell out all the garlands. When parting, Jodi said, “Shanti, we have prepared something for you.” But Shanti was so anxious that she didn’t seem to have time to hear them out. She quickly ran to Ramu’s shop, only to find the dollhad been sold. Broken-hearted, she ran back home and told Mom everything, tears flowing down in flood.
Mom comforted Shanti with hugs, and then handed her a filled package wrapped in paper. “Jodi dropped this off for you, dear.” Shanti was surprised and unwrapped it. It was the doll! Also, she found a note on the back of the doll: For our dearest friend, Shanti. Nothing can express our deepest gratitude for your purest heart. Your sincere friendship will bethe most invaluable treasure for our family. - From Jodi and Kiran. Shanti smiled. Hugging the doll, she felt so blessed about everything that happened.

6.Early the next morning, Kyle got ready and his mom smilingly held the door open. She told Kyle that it was nice to see him go out to play with friends. Making no reply, Kyle just said good-bye, rode on his bike and left. He didn’t get rid of the sorrow for Jack’s moving away, but still expected for meeting Max in the zoo. According to the agreement, Kyle arrived at the gate of the zoo, standing there with a baseball in his hand, which was a sign to recognize. He searched everywhere for a boy who was holding a baseball just like him. Suddenly, Kyle heard a voice calling his name behind him. So he turned around.
It was a girl that was pushing the bike and approaching him. Both were surprised, especially Kyle. “Eh…are you Max?” Kyle asked doubtfully for he thought Max was supposed to be a boy. The girl answered,“ Yes, so…you’re Kyle?” They recognized each other then went into the zoo. Kyle and Max had a good time that day. Cyclops started to run between two windows again, and Kyle has never felt sad and lonely since then.
第一段里写Kyle的母亲给他的叮嘱,然后描述他一路去往商量好的见面地点,反映前文的“how to go to the zoo, when and where to meet”这些内容,可以写为:She told Kyle that it was nice to see him go out to play with friends.
Both were surprised, especially Kyle. “Eh…are you Max?” Kyle asked doubtfully. The girl answered,“ Yes, so…you’re Kyle?” They recognized each other then went into the zoo. Kyle and Max had a good time that day. Cyclops started to run between two windows again, and Kyle has never felt sad and lonely since then.

    7.Para. 1:
My eyes were filled with tears. I couldn’t believe it. The girl who I was breaking my back to be friends with treated me as a fool. I remembered how many times I’d used the word myself just to fit in, and it made me feel even worse. Sara said, “Elizabeth does things like that to a lot of people. You didn’t deserve to be treated that way, and nobody else does either.”
    Para. 2:
“You’re right, Sara,” I said. I thought of all the times I’d laughed when Elizabeth had made fun of someone else. It only bothered me when she turned her sights on me. I should have stood up to her a long time ago. I stopped hanging out with Elizabeth since then. The word Coco will always serve as a reminder that I need to stay true to myself and never compromise my values to be friends with someone.

8.The music played on. Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly so much so that it sounded like a recording. Then an idea hit Hamed. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. It was a good chance for Mohi to show his talent and be accepted by his classmates. Thinking of that, Hamed left quietly.
Before Teacher’s Day concert, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Mohi became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school. Mohi and Hamed became the best of friends eventually.
