While some customs like setting off fireworks and counting down the last few seconds seem universal, many countries have their own unique New Year’s Eve traditions.
      Denmark:Break plates
A Danish tradition is to throw plates and dishes against friends’ and neighbors’ front doors. It’s a bit of a popularity contest as the bigger the pile of broken china is the next morning, the more friends and good luck you’ll have in the coming year.
      Germany:Pouring lead
In Germany, people melt small pieces of lead in a spoon over a candle, and then pour the liquid into cold water. The shapes from the lead pouring are supposed to reveal what the year ahead will bring. If the lead forms a ball, luck will roll one’s way, while the shape of a crown means wealth;a cross means death and a star will bring happiness.
      Spain:Twelve grapes of luck
In Spain, one New Year’s tradition is to eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the coming year,to secure prosperity(繁荣). You need to eat one grape with each bell strike at midnight. The tradition dates from 1909 when farmers in Alicante came up with this idea to sell more grapes after an exceptional harvest.
      Philippines:Round food,round clothes,round everything

The“24 solar terms(节气)”originated and was first used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agriculture production, special climate signs and even healthy living tips. What’s more, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list in 2016. Now,it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
On the eve of Qingming Festival,Shi Chang-hong released(发布) his version of reproduced and packaged characters for each solar term in the form of “moving art” of gifs. Since their first release on ZCOOL on March 29,the gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly flooded social media with millions of hits during the festival period.
To maximize publicity,Shi released his work in three forms:video, animation and picture. The background sounds added to the brilliance.
“When I watch the short video,I can strongly feel the Chinese-style elements hidden in them. And it is really cool to liven up traditional Chinese culture in such a unique way,” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.
“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest,it would really surprise me if the work does not arouse great interest among Chinese people. The 24 solar terms is a deeply rooted concept that covers the essence(本质) of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small portion of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to increase Chinese people’s self awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar terms work is only a part of my whole design programme‘Charm China’,which I started over a year ago,”Shi told China Daily.

You may have celebrated the new year on January 1st,but the next day cats get to celebrate the new year. Well, actually, cats don’t celebrate the new year, they celebrate the mew year.
Any cat owner will tell you that cats consider themselves to be far,far better than us. They most certainly feel they deserve all that life has to offer,so why not have a Happy Mew Year Day For Cats Day just for them? Like the human version of New Year’s Day,it is on this special day that our feline(猫科的)companions can paw and consider the“mewness” of the brand new season and all of the possibilities it holds. Perhaps this will be the year their people start feeding them tinned food instead of dry? Will the useless dog realize that the cat is king in this house? All these questions and more can be considered by our kitties today while they go about their normal business, looking distant and disinterested.
The truth is that many animal related holidays can also help raise awareness about the millions of unwanted, unloved and abused pets that end up in animal shelters and are eventually put to sleep for lack of funds to keep them alive. So if you haven’t got your own perfect feline ruler yet,it’s time to take action on January 2nd. As you’re welcoming in the New Year into your life, won’t you consider opening your heart and your home to a new four-legged friend as well?
Cats can serve many purposes around the home—they are natural, greedy hunters;they’re the perfect mix of both fun and silly. Nothing beats the thankfulness of a cat,for sure! You may have all sorts of New Year’s resolutions that may or may not work out,but adopting a cat is something you will never regret, and the cat will never forget.
    8. What may the cat owners agree with?
    A. Cats should have holidays.
    B. Cats are the best pets ever.
    C. Cats are proud animals.
    D. Cats enjoy dry food.
    9. What’s the purpose of celebrating“Happy Mew Year”?
    A. To set up a new business.
    B. To celebrate the new year.
    C. To show love for cats.
    D. To draw attention to festivals.
    10. What can best explain the underlined word “abused” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Badly treated. B. Deeply loved. C. Newly born. D. Well fed.

A British woman who won a $1 million prize after she was named the World’s Best Teacher will use the cash to bring inspirational figures into UK schools.
Andria Zafirakou,a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom revolution(变革). “We are going to make a change,”she said. “I’ve started a project to promote the teaching of the arts in our schools.”
The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any sort—whether an up-and-coming local musician or a major movie star—into schools to work with and inspire children.
Zafirakou began the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. “I’ve seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by—their eyes are shining and their faces light up,”she said.“We need artists more than ever in our schools.”
Artist Michael Craig-Martin said:“Andria’s brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded in schools.”It was a mistake to see the arts as unnecessary,he added.
Historian Sir Simon Schama is also a supporter of the project. He said that arts education in schools was not just an add-on. “It is absolutely necessary. The future depends on creativity and creativity depends on the young. What will remain of us when artificial intelligence takes over will be our creativity, and it is our creative spirit, our visionary sense of freshness, that has been our strength for centuries. ”
    12. What will Zafirakou do with her prize money?
    A. Make a movie. B. Build new schools.
    C. Run a project. D. Help local musicians.
    13. What does Craig-Martin think of the teaching of the arts in UK schools?
    A. It is particularly difficult. B. It increases artists’ income.
    C. It opens children’s mind. D. It deserves greater attention.
    14. What should be stressed in school education according to Schama?
    A. Moral principles. B. Interpersonal skills.
    C. Creative abilities. D. Positive worldviews.
    15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Bring Artists to Schools B. When Historians Meet Artists
    C. Arts Education in Britain D. The World’s Best Arts Teacher

Don’t fear failure. So often we are taught in our lives that failing is a bad thing. Failure is almost always placed at odds (奇怪的事物) with success. 17 No one ever did it right all the time. But most that have experienced some success have failed at some point.
Seek a mentor (导师). 18 Work towards success and deal with failure as a by-product of a well-developed plan. The best way to achieve success and limit failure is to work with someone that has already been down the same road.
19 Too often we spend our time doing all the talking and not doing any listening. Even when we’re listening,we’re thinking about the next thing we’re going to say. By truly listening we can fully understand what we are being told and properly engage in the conversation. If we do not listen we cannot provide what is needed. We cannot give the needed advice, solution,or shoulder to cry on.
Live a balanced life. In life we are constantly pulled in many different directions:family, work, school, faith, community, etc. 20 There are not enough hours in a day for each demand. However, over the long term,we can achieve balance.
    A. Take risks.
    B. Shut up and listen.
    C. It is impossible to give attention to all things at once.
    D. A balanced life should include doing a good job at work.
    E. Yet,without failure few would know the way to success.

    The Lesson in Design
It was Friday afternoon. On the way home from school,Andy studied the fabrics(面料) and colors of the other students’ clothes. Everyone wore the same basic outfit-jeans and some sort of shirt. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing attractive or stylish. Being from a family of tailors(裁缝),Andy had learned how to make and change clothes over years. But he wanted to be more than just a tailor.
When Andy arrived at his father’s tailor shop,he watched his father—pins(大头针)in his mouth, measuring tape hung around his neck— expertly repair pants. Andy’s father always said,“Often, when people look better, they act better too.”That was exactly the reason why Andy longed to create something of his own, something different, something exceptional.
“Andy, there’s something I want to give you.” Andy’s father peered over his eyeglasses and asked Andy to follow him to the back room. On the corner of a large worktable sat a heavy sewing machine(缝纫机),an old model that looked very different from the modern one Andy’s father used.“I was your age when my father gave this to me,and now I’m giving it to you.” Andy eyed the old machine appreciatively.“Thank you,Dad. This is perfect!”
Andy wanted to use the sewing machine right away to realize his dream—an outstanding outfit. First he drew a design that was stylish yet original and then he paid a visit to the fabric store to select the perfect fabrics for his creation. Andy began working that same night, losing himself in lines and folds, ripping out stitches(缝线)and redoing them. It took over a week, but after multiple fittings and adjustments, his outfit was ready for its first appearance.
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。
On Monday morning,Andy walked into school expecting the glowing admiration of his fellow students.

Full of disappointment and anger,he rushed home.

Pandemic prevention knowledge contest held yesterday
The COVID-19 pandemic has alerted many of us. In order to raise the awareness of pandemic prevention,a knowledge contest was held in the conference hall in our school yesterday.
360 students in all from 75 classes entered for the contest, many of whom had worked very hard and made full preparations for it. The result will be released as scheduled next Monday.
After the contest, many students think it makes good sense. Not only have they mastered more related knowledge, but they have known the importance of pandemic prevention.

    第二节
    [范文赏读]
On Monday morning,Andy walked into school expecting the glowing admiration of his fellow students. However,as he walked down the hall, many heads turned. (运用了as引导的时间状语从句)Boys pointed at him,and girls covered their mouths to hide their laughter. A day full of whispers, jeers, and awkward questions left Andy collapsed in his seat in the class- room. Proud as he was of his creation this morning,he wished he could have a change of his clothes. (运用了as引导的让步状语从句和wish之后省略that的宾语从句)Once the last bell rang,Andy stormed out of the classroom.
Full of disappointment and anger,he rushed home. Throwing himself into the chair,Andy began to cry.“It hasn’t been a great day, huh?”Andy’s father asked, sitting beside him.“Nobody could understand me!”Andy sobbed, burying his face in his hands.“Well, not all people can appreciate this creation.”Andy’s father responded,“As for me,I like your incredible design. Why don’t you think of it as your first draft? The most famous designers didn’t build their clothing kingdom on one outfit—especially their first.“A first draft...”Andy sniffled. He knew that his father always had a point.(运用了that引导的宾语从句)Eventually,Andy looked up at his father, smiling through tears. Apparently this was the best lesson in design.
