    There are abut 5, 000 different kinds f ladybugs (瓢虫) in the wrld. They are als knwn as lady beetles r ladybirds. They have many different clrs and patterns, but the best­knwn in Nrth America is the seven­sptted ladybug, with its shiny, red­and­black bdy.


    In many cultures, ladybugs are thught t be gd luck. Mst peple like them because they are pretty, lvely and d n harm t human beings. But farmers lve them because they eat aphids and ther plant­eating pests. One ladybug can eat up 5,000 insects in its lifetime!


    Mst ladybugs have dme­shaped bdies with six shrt legs. Depending n the kind, they can have spts, stripes r nthing at all. Seven­sptted ladybugs are red r range with three spts n each side and ne in the middle. They have black heads. Ladybugs are clrful fr a reasn. They tell the enemies: “ Eat smething else! I taste terrible.” When threatened, they may play dead. Birds are ladybugs' main predatrs, but they are als eaten by frgs, spiders, and dragnflies.


    Ladybugs are happy in many different places, including grasslands, frests, cities, suburbs, and alng rivers. Seven­sptted ladybugs are natives t Eurpe but were brught t Nrth America in the mid­1900s.


    Ladybugs are active frm spring until fall. When the weather turns cld, they lk fr a warm place t hibernate (冬眠), such as in rtting lgs, under rcks, r even inside huses. These hibernating places can have thusands f ladybugs.


    The name “ladybug” was given by Eurpean farmers wh prayed t the Virgin Mary when pests began eating their crps. After ladybugs came and wiped ut the invading insects, the farmers named them “beetle f Our Lady”. This later was shrtened t “lady beetle” and “ladybug”.
