①What’s the meaning of the underlined word/phrase...in Chinese?
    ②The underlined word...refers to/probably means...
③The underlined word...could be replaced by...
    ④What is the meaning of...
⑤Which of the following words can take the place of the word...?
有时文章借助关联词(如because,as,since,for,so,thus,as a result,of course,therefore等)表示因果关系。
例You shouldn’t have blamed him for that, for it wasn’t his fault.
Man has known something about the planets Venus,Mars, and Jupiter with the help of spaceships.
He is so homely, not at all as handsome as his brother.
解析 根据“not at all as handsome...”
    定义或解释形式多样,常由is,that is(to say),in other words,call,mean,be considered to be,refer to,be called,be known as,define,represent等词汇或破折号来表示。
But sometimes,no rain falls for a long,long time.Then there is a dry period,or drought.
而a dry period和drought是同义词。这种同义或释义关系常由is,or,that is,in other words,be called或破折号等来表示。
Bananas, oranges, pineapples, coconuts and some other kinds of fruit grow in warm areas.
The penguin is a kind of seabird living in the South Pole.It is fat and walks in a funny way.Although it cannot fly,it can swim in the icy water to catch the fish.
One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is,you can take something positive out of it.
It wasn’t until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy.
The word“positive”in the passage probably means .
    A.terrible B.bad C.good D .real
If he thinks he can invite me out,he is all wet.I don’t like to be with him.
    The underlined phrase“all wet”means .
    A.drunk B.sweating C.happy D.wrong
A deaf-and-dumb guy went into a hardware store to ask for some nails.
    英语中有些单词来自汉语,与汉语的发音有些相似,另外也有一些单词译成汉语时采用音译,如:sofa(沙发),coffee(咖啡),typhoon(台风),aspirin(阿司匹林),nylon(尼龙)等。
The Olympic Games began in the 5th century BC.
One day it was revealed that Mrs Morel had cancer and was beyond any help except that of morphine.

①Which of the following is true/not true?
②Which of the following is mentioned/not mentioned in the passage?
③Which of the following statements is true according to this passage?
④Which of the following best describes...?
⑤Which of the following shows/gives the right relationship /position of...?
    ⑥When/Where/Why/Who/What/How...?

Bobby was preparing to go to bed one night when he heard a shrill screech(尖叫)coming from the barn(牲口棚) outside. What could be making such a loud noise so late in the evening? He had trouble falling asleep and turned all night long dreaming about the noisy monster in the barn. When Bobby woke the next morning, he ran to the barn to discover what caused the loud noise last night. Bobby was baffled. He could not figure out what would make such a noise. That evening after dinner, Bobby gathered his courage, held a flashlight and headed out to the barn.
“Where are you going?” Bobby’s father asked as Bobby made his way through the kitchen to the back door.
“I am going to find the monster in the barn that was making such a noise last night,” Bobby replied bravely.
“If you are going to look for a monster, you might need some help,”Bobby’s dad responded as he walked with Bobby out to the barn.
“What did this monster sound like?”Bobby’s dad asked.
“It was a screeching noise,”Bobby said,“and it was coming from the barn. I know it!” Bobby’s dad began to smile as they went near the barn, and he took the flashlight from Bobby. Shining the flashlight up at the roof of the barn, Bobby and his dad saw a small brown owl in the roof.
“It was only a barn owl that you heard last night,” Bobby’s dad said,“They are active in the night so that is why you only heard him at night. He must have been hunting.”
Bobby was relieved that it wasn’t really a monster. He thanked his dad as they walked back to the house. As they reached the door they heard a loud screech and looked up just in time to see the barn owl flying away into the night sky.

For a long time, scientists believed that only humans were left- or right-handed. However, recent studies have shown that this isn’t true. Just like people, animals favor one side or the other.

In Ireland, scientists studied a group of 42 cats. They gave them three tasks. One was to get a delicious piece of fish out of a bottle. They found that the male cats preferred to use their left paw, and the female cats preferred to use their right.

Being left- or right-handed isn’t limited to(局限于) arms and legs. It can include eyes, ears, claws, and even tails. In Italy, scientists discovered that dogs wag their tails to the right when they see something that they like. When they see something that they don’t like, their tails go to the left.
There are lots of other fun examples. Left-handed dolphins swim in a different direction around the pool. Elephants like to swing their trunks in one direction. Even snakes prefer to curl up only one way.
Many people believe that polar bears are left-handed. They say, for example, that polar bears cover their black nose with their right paw, which helps them hide in the snow when they are hunting. Then they can sneak up(悄悄靠近) on a seal, and their left paw will be free to catch it.
Scientists, however, disagree. Some have watched polar bears for thousands of hours. They never saw the bears cover their nose during a hunt. They also saw no evidence(证据) that they were left-handed. Without taking any notice of this, many websites continue to say that polar bears are left-handed.
Scientists are still learning about animals and their behaviors. The next time you see an animal, whether it’s your pet cat or an elephant, try figuring out yourself which it prefers—left or right.
1.The underlined word “favor” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .
    A.give B.find C.see D.prefer
2.In Paragraph 2, we can get the information about .
A.an Irish scientist who studies cats
B.a study about cats and its findings
C.three tasks done by male and female cats
D.an introduction to how cats get fish
3.Which one of the following statements is TRUE about polar bears?
A.It’s believed that polar bears are left-handed for they use their left paw to cover their nose.
B.The finding that polar bears cover their nose while hunting is supported by scientists.
C.Scientists disagree with the popular belief that polar bears are left-handed.
D.The information from many websites that polar bears are left-handed is believable.
4.The purpose of this passage is mainly to .
    A.introduce recent studies of animals

The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground.Of course,it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help.Be sure to keep the door closed.Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room.Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely.Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury.Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall(使势头减弱).

TOKYO, JAPAN—What do you do when you see a cockroach (蟑螂)? Do you hit it with a newspaper? Do you step on it?
When researchers at Tokyo University see a cockroach, they take the remote control and make the cockroach turn around, run left or right, or go forward. These scientists are changing the cockroaches into robots. Each cockroach has a very small pack that has in it a microprocessor(微处理器).Then researchers can send signals from the remote control to the pack. The signals control the movements of the cockroaches.
Why does anyone want to control a cockroach? “Insects can do many things that people can’t,” says Isao Shimoyama, head of robot research at Tokyo University. In a few years, he says, these robot insects will carry very small cameras. They will be able to move through earthquake rubble(瓦砾)to look for people or move under doors to find information about someone.
This may seem strange, but the Japanese government thinks the research is very important. The government is giving the scientists $ 5 million for this research.
First, the researchers breed (培育)hundreds of cockroaches. They use only the American cockroach because it is bigger and stronger than other cockroaches. Then they choose the best cockroaches and remove their wings and antennae(触须). They put small packs where the antennae were. The packs weigh about three grams, or about two times the weight of the cockroaches themselves. “Cockroaches are very strong,” says Ralph Holzer, who is a researcher at Tokyo University. “They can lift 20 times their own weight.”
With a remote control, the scientists send signals to the packs. When a cockroach gets the signal, it moves. The problem is that the cockroaches don’t always move in the right direction.
    1. The scientists are changing the cockroaches into robots because ______.
    A. they want cockroaches to do things people can’t in the future
    B. they want to control the movements of the cockroaches
    C. they want cockroaches to take photos of the earthquakes
    D. they want to send signals to the packs on the cockroaches
    2. What can cockroaches do to help people?
    A. They can lift 20 times their own weight.
    B. They can help people to carry very small cameras.
    C. They can breed hundreds of cockroaches.
    D. They can search for those people in rubble after an earthquake.
    3. Scientists control cockroaches’ movements ______.
    A. by removing their wings
    B. by sending signals from the remote control
    C. by using very small cameras
    D. by removing their antennae
    4. What problem do the researchers meet with?
    A. The cockroaches sometimes don’t move.
    B. The cockroaches sometimes move in the wrong direction.
    C. The cockroaches are too big to move through earthquake rubble.
    D. The cockroaches can only lift 20 times their own weight.
    1.【答案】 A。

Scientists in Britain and the United States have made a new kind of enzyme(酵素) that eats plastics(塑料). With its help, plastics can be turned into smaller parts and go away quickly. Scientists believe that, in the future, it could solve the problem of plastic pollution.
The enzyme is able to break down PET, a form of plastic. PET was first made in the 1940s and is now widely used to make plastic bottles. It can remain in the environment for many years and pollute large areas of land and water. So it has always been a headache to deal with the waste from PET and other plastics.
The researchers made the discovery(发现) while examining the structure of a natural enzyme in Japan. They found that the natural enzyme was helping to break down PET plastics. So, they decided to make small changes to the enzyme by adding some amino acids(氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme’s plastic-eating abilities work faster and better.
John McGeehan, one of the lead researchers, said, “We’ve made an improved enzyme. It’s better than the natural one. And we are trying to make more improvements to it.” He went on, “The enzyme is not harmful to humans or animals, and it is friendly to the environment. So we are considering putting it into wider use.”
The team is now trying to make the enzyme break down PET in large quantities(大量地). “We’ll see that the plastic pollution may be stopped with this technology. However, there is still a long way to go,” John McGeehan added.
1.According to the scientists, the enzyme may solve the problem of pollution.
    A.air B.water C.light D.plastic
