    Oliver Twist (excerpt)

    Oliver's early life

Oliver Twist was brn in a wrkhuse, and when he arrived in this hard wrld,it was very dubtful whether he wuld live beynd the first three minutes. He lay n a hard little bed and struggled t start breathing.

Oliver fught his first battle withut much assistance frm the tw peple present at his birth. One was an ld wman,wh was nearly always drunk, and the ther was a busy lcal dctr,wh was nt paid enugh t be very interested in Oliver's survival. After all, death was a cmmn event in the wrkhuse, where nly the pr and hmeless lived.

Hwever,Oliver managed t draw his first breath, and then annunced his arrival t the rest f the wrkhuse by crying ludly. His mther raised her pale yung face frm the pillw and whispered,“Let me see the child, and die.”

The dctr turned away frm the fire, where he had been warming his hands.“Yu must nt talk abut dying yet,” he said t her kindly. He gave her the child t hld.Lvingly, she kissed the baby n its frehead with her cld white lips, then stared wildly arund the rm,fell back—and died.“Pr dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bttle back in the pcket f her lng skirt.

The dctr began t put n his cat.“The baby is weak and will prbably have difficulties,” he said.“If s,give it a little milk t keep it quiet.” Then he lked at the dead wman.“The mther was a gdlking girl.Where did she cme frm?”

“She was brught here last night,” replied the ld wman.“She was fund lying in the street. She'd walked sme distance, judging by her shes, which were wrn t pieces.Where she came frm, where she was ging t,r what her name was, nbdy knws.”

The dctr lifted the girl's left hand.“The ld stry,” he said sadly, shaking his head.“N wedding ring,I see.Ah! Gd night.”

And s Oliver was left with nly the drunken nurse.Withut clthes, under his first blanket,he culd have been the child f a king r a beggar. But when the wman dressed him later in rugh cttn clthes, yellw with age,he lked exactly what he was—an rphan in a wrkhuse, ready fr a life f misery, hunger, and neglect.

Oliver cried ludly. If he culd have knwn that he was a wrkhuse rphan, perhaps he wuld have cried even mre ludly.

There was n ne t lk after the baby in the wrkhuse,s Oliver was sent t a special “baby farm” nearby. There,he and thirty ther children rlled arund the flr all day, withut the incnvenience f t much fd r t much clthing.Mrs Mann, the ld wman wh “lked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was gd fr children, and a full stmach was very dangerus t their health. She als knew what was gd fr herself,s she kept fr her wn use the mney that she was given fr the children's fd.The bard respnsible fr the rphans smetimes checked n the health f the children, but they always sent the beadle,a kind f lcal pliceman,t annunce their visit the day befre.S whenever the bard arrived,f curse, the children were always neat and clean.

This was the way Oliver was brught up.Cnsequently,at the age f nine he was a pale, thin child and shrt fr his age.But despite frequent beatings by Mrs Mann, his spirit was strng, which was prbably the reasn why he managed t reach the age f nine at all.

On Oliver's ninth birthday,Mr Bumble the beadle came t the huse t see Mrs Mann.Thrugh the frnt windw Mrs Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly t the girl wh wrked with her.

“Quick! Take Oliver and thse thers upstairs t be washed!” she said. Then she ran ut t unlck the gate.(It was always kept lcked t prevent fficial visitrs walking in unexpectedly.)

“I have business t talk abut,” Mr Bumble tld Mrs Mann as he entered the huse.He was a big fat man, ften badtempered, and was full f selfimprtance. He did nt like t be kept waiting at a lcked gate.

Mrs Mann tk his hat and cat, placed a chair fr him,and expressed great cncern fr his cmfrt.“Yu've had a lng walk,Mr Bumble” she said,“and yu must be thirsty.”She tk ut a bttle frm the cupbard.

“N,thank yu,Mrs Mann.Nt a drp.” He waved the bttle away.

“Just a little drp,Mr Bumble, with cld water,” said Mrs Mann persuasively.

Mr Bumble cughed.“What is it?” he asked, lking at the bttle with interest.

“Gin.I keep it fr the children's medicine drink.”

“Yu give the children gin,Mrs Mann?” asked Mr Bumble, watching as she mixed his drink.

“Only with medicine, sir.I dn't like t see them suffer.”

“Yu're a gd wman,Mrs Mann.” Mr Bumble drank half his glass immediately.“I'll tell the bard abut yu.Nw,the reasn why I'm here.Oliver Twist is nine years ld tday. We've never been able t discver anything abut his parents.”

“Then hw did he get his name?”

“I gave it t him,” said Mr Bumble prudly.“We fllw the alphabet. The last ne was an S—Swubble. Then it was T,s this ne is Twist. The next ne will be Unwin.Anyway,Oliver Twist is nw ld enugh t return t the wrkhuse.Bring him here, please.” While Mrs Mann went t get him,Mr Bumble finished the rest f his gin.

Oliver, his face and hands nw almst clean, was led int the rm.

“Will yu cme alng with me,Oliver?” asked Mr Bumble in a lud vice.

Oliver was very glad t be free f Mrs Mann's vilence, but he said nthing because she was angrily shaking her finger at him.Hwever,as the gate clsed behind Oliver,he burst int tears. He was leaving behind the ther children, the nly friends he had,and he realized at that mment hw lnely he was in the wrld.

Mr Bumble walked n with lng steps, with Oliver n his shrt little legs running beside him.The feeling f cntentment prduced by ginandwater had nw disappeared, and the beadle was in a bad md nce mre.
