    课题

    Lesson 2 - Writing

    教学目标

    - Ss will have knowledge about graphs

    - Ss learn what is line graphs and the purpose of using line graphs.

    - Ss learn how to describe line graphs.

    教学重点

    - Structure for describing line graphs.

    - What kind of information should be included in different parts of the writing.

    - Useful expressions.

    教学难点

    - how to describe the changes and trends by describing the facts.

    教学准备

    - print out the flash cards (Flash card game 1 and flash card game 2 images ).

    - PPT

    教学过程

    1. Warm up game(3-5 mins)

    ABC Order

    This is a great way to combine reading and math!  T can either make your own alphabet flashcards with index cards and a sharpie or get a pack of simple alphabet flashcards. Then let your Ss match the first 12 letters of the alphabet with the appropriate ordinal number.You can mix them up to make it more challenging for your more advanced learners.

    To add another level of difficulty, have your Ss write their spelling words or vocabulary words and cut them out. Then have them mix the words up and put the words into alphabetical order while matching the correct ordinal number.

    1. About Graphs and line Graphs (15 - 20 mins)

    A.What are Graph Charts

    - Let Ss have a big picture about Graph charts. And let students know that different Graphs serve different purposes. 

    - Show Ss different kinds of Graphs and the naming (PPT7). If Time permitted, T briefly discuss the difference between these Graphs on the shapes and purposes.

    B. What is the purpose for Line graphs (PPT 12-16)

    The purpose of line graphs is the key information when we describe it. So, T need to discuss deeply with Ss about this in class.

    T can let students discuss in group first. They share their findings. Here are some topics Ss can discuss (use the line graph on PPT p8):

    - What information can you read in the line graph? (list out)

    - Does the information help us in our real life? How?

    - Which information is the most meaningful? Why?

    T summarize:

    - Line graphs can show some changes over some period of time.

    - It can help us to see the pattern and predict future changes.

    C.Teach parts of line graphs  (PPT 17-27)

    Ss learn the naming of each parts of line graphs.

     

     

    1. Practice (15 - 20 mins)
      A. Structure and example
    1.      Introduction
      In this part, we should :

    • State what the Graph is about. (by reading the Title of the graph, we can understand what’s the graph is about.We also need to read the whole graph then describe it with our won word.)

    • Describe some important details about what the graph shows. Sometimes, we can describe Important information from a line graph, which includes maximum amounts, minimum amounts, averages, and amount of change. (Data, and the line) 

     

    The introduction can be started with these useful introductory expressions:

    - The graph shows ...

    - Look at the title, ...

    - See the labeling of axis, ...

    - From the graph it is clear ....

     

    Show and explain the Example on PPT p11.

     

    1.     Describing Graphs Trend

    Remind Ss that the purpose of Line graph is to show the changes in a certain period. So, In this part, we need to describe the pattern or trend.  And provide evidence.

    There are some verbs, adj, or adv which are helpful:

    Verbs: rise, grow, go up to, fall, go down, no change, stayreach, ...

    Adjectives: big, huge,  small, ...

    Adverbs: quickly, suddenly, slowly...

    If time permitted, give more examples for these words. Usually, there are three trends: rise, drop, and stay. Introduce related words, and encourage Ss to use synonyms in different sentences. 

    In the example on P12, T can practice using these words. Trend shows the pattern, and the number shows the evidence. Always use number to explain the trend.

     

    1.      Conclusion or Recommendation

    We can restate the trends or relate to the real world give reader recommendation to act.

    The example on P13 shows a summary. We also can say: We can predict that more hot dogs are going to be sold on Saturday and Sunday.

    1. Practice with assistance
      Use the PPT, Ss discuss in groups to fill in the blank. Build scaffold - practice some important sentences and expressions.
      Use PPT 14, Ss discuss in groups about what this graph talks about. And describe in their own word. Share their writing with different groups. Edit and do peer review with different groups (PPT 18).

     

     

    1. Summary(5 mins)
    1. We learned what is Graph Charts, and types. Line graph is one kind of Graph charts.
    2. We learned how to read line graph. Ling graphs tell CHANGEs and TRENDs.
    3. We learned how to describe a line graph by a basic structure. And which information is important and should be talked about.
    4. We learned and practiced useful expressions which help us to describe the line graph logically and professionally.

     

    板书设计

    - Teacher can make your own flash cards and stick on the board to play games with students.

    - Teacher can make flash cards to show students floor, fractions.

    - Teacher can make animal flash cards to play your own game to practice position. 

    课后作业

    Use the method we learned to describe the line graph on our text book on P28.

    教学反思

            Graphs are important way to explain numbers. Line Graph is an important kind of Graph. We can clearly see the changes in the graph. And it tells the trends.

            What information is important is the key to write a success description. Ss should learn how to find it out and know the useful expressions.

            Ts can extend or the examples based on your teaching needs.
