    Unit 2 Numbers全英教学设计

    课题

    Lesson 1 - Reading and Comprehension

    教学目标

    - Ss learn background information about India.

    - Ss learn to use different methods to learn new words. We will apply to future lessons.

    - Help Ss use image to help to improve their understanding.

    - Ss will demonstrate their understanding by describe the image, or draw an image.

    教学重点

    - Help students visualize the meaning of words, expressions and paragraphs.

    教学难点

    - Ss try to visualize the meaning of words, expressions and paragraphs.

    教学准备

    T prints out flash cards if needed.

    教学过程

    1. Warm up game(8-10mins)

    Sing the 10 little Indians song. Since the Indians in the song are different from the Indian we are going to discuss in the article. T introduces these two Indians and compares the countries they live and their tradition to build basic knowledge. At the same time, Ss will acquire new words like “India, Indian, Palace”

     

    1. Vocabulary (15 mins)
    1. Teach nouns together by using images.

    In PPT12-13, Ss don’t have to look into the dictionary. They just need to directly link the English words with the real things. T helps to correct them if they have any concern. And practice compound words. Etc. I would suggest T emphasis the pronunciation, and practice if time is permitted. T can use flash card to play some flash card game. For example, in our traditional classes, Students sit in lines. T distributes a flash card to the first student of each line, and whisper the word on the flash card. When each line gets the flash card, T will let the first Ss pass the card to the Ss behind and say the word, then pass on. The line wins if the last S of the line shout out the word correctly the first.

    1. Study new words with synonyms (PPT 14-16)

    Ss will learn a new word easier from what they’ve known, or with connections.
    a. number of VS amount of : Teacher uses the audio to help students read these expressions fluently. And make more sentences with students.

    b. PPT 15, T uses the picture to let student understand we can use wise to describe what kinds of person. But leave a question for Ss to think during reading. We’ve learned smart, clever, and intelligent before,  can you tell what’s the different between these words after reading the story?
    c. PPT 16, first 3 expressions has similar meaning and usage. Show the book covers to let Ss understand they are usually used at the beginning of stories. Just need to mention that “for a long time” is different. And give students examples.

    C. Study new words by comparing (PPT 17-18)

    1. Favourite is a frequent used word. Give as much example as possible. After teaching the word. Play games with Ss. T will ask students for their favourite pet, favourite activities. And Ss can do research after class to know similar information for their family members. Favourite is British English /favorite is U.S. English, and color is similar .
    2. We’ve discussed palace in the warm up. Now, students need to pronounce it correctly. And it’s similar to place. Let Ss compare and describe the difference.

    D.Some words have different meaning (PPT 19-21)

    T explain the meaning and provide Ss examples. For verbs, such as promise and challenge, T should let them know how to use them. T can let students make sentences.

     

    1. Reading and Comprehension (25-30)
      A. Pre-reading

    Discuss the image in the text book (PPT 23)ask students some basic questions. Let Ss focus on the image and link the image with what they’ve known. And begin with simple questions

    1. How many people?
    2. Where are they? Ss may say “in India”. T can keep on asking “WHY” How can they tell it’s India from the image.from what people wear If they say “ in a Palace ” , let them point it out and give the group points. If they didn’t mention “palace”, T can bring it out.
    3. What are they doing? If Ss couldn’t say “chess”, T can provide support.
    4. Finally, let Ss keep drawing pictures in their mind when we go deeper.

    B.During-reading

    1. T reads, or let Ss read, or play the audio for by paragraph. Then ask questions after reading.
    2. Ss always need to know the title of a story. T ask what’s the title? Let Ss predict what would the story talk about.
    3. In the first paragraph, let students think, when was this story happened. Where did the king live? What was his favourite game. They can draw on a paper.(PPT24)
    4. PPT25,  paragraph 2, after reading, T asks questions in the PPT. The first two questions will help Ss find out facts. The 3rd question will help Ss better understand what does “challenge” mean. “Challenge” also make readers feel that chess is not an easy game.
    5. PPT 26, Paragraph 3 is difficult to understand. T explain “... double the amount for each of the rest of the squares”. Let student draw a simple chessboard on paper, and try to draw dots(represents rice) in the the chessboard. Use this image to check students understand and help them understand.
    6.  Challenge Ss who have interest in math, can let they try to calculate the amount of rice in a certain square.
    7. PPT 28. These two paragraphs are interesting. We hope Ss can understand the feeling of the king and the old man. They can act these two paragraph. Encourage Ss show their emotion.
    8. PPT 29. The ending of the story. T can ask questions to check Ss’ understanding. And keep drawing in mind or on a paper.
    9. Ss can compare their drawing with the image on the textbook.
    1. After reading

    Bring out the question: To compare “wise” with “clever” and “intelligent”. In Unit 1, we learned Intelligent. Now we learned wise. Through the story, do you think if there are any differences?

     

    1. Summary(5 mins)

    1. We discussed about the tradition of different Indians. And explored simple information about India.

    2. We used different methods to learn new words: We used images to learn nouns and used synonyms to compare different words or expressions. We also found that there are some words are similar, we also can learn them together. And some words have different meaning. We should use them in different sentences.

    3. During reading, we also use image to help us to better understand the story. We can read the image or draw the image, and we even can act.

     

    板书设计

    Model how to draw the image while reading. (When Ss do the drawing exercises, please let them know, their drawing will not be judged. Ss can draw in any style. The purpose is to help them better understand the text.)

    课后作业

    - Compare “wise” with “clever” and ”intelligent”

    - If you are good at math. You may calculate and find out how many grains should it be in the 20th square?

    - If you are interested in India, read a passage after class or search for more information.

    教学反思

            Through the process, help students think as English speaker. Ss don’t have to translate.

            Always visualize what they are reading. It’s an important method to improve comprehension.
