I discovered my love for writing while working on my undergraduate degree in English. I fell in love with children's literature and knew that was what I wanted to do with my life: write for children. So I wanted to learn how to write. But life kept me busy, and my dream stopped.
Two decades later, I wanted to sign up for a university's writing program for adults to accept the education of writing. 1 hoped to greatly improve my writing skills and then start my writing journey. So I applied to a university for such a writing program.
But after several days of taking the courses, I found the learning tasks were too heavy in light of my busy family life, so I dropped out of the program.
Over the next few years, I applied to several universities’ writing programs again. However, still due to the busy family life, I gave up after only a few days of taking the courses. And I knew I would never apply to a school again. I had closed that door.
Two years ago, my husband got a new job, requiring us to move from our home in Texas to Washington, D.C.it wasn't an easy move. The family part was the problem. No one would be moving with us. All our children had grown up. So when we sat down for dinner in our new home-the big, empty and quiet house, only my husband and me, I didn't know how to deal with the quiet life.
One morning, I woke up from a dream. In my dream, I had contacted the last university's writing department, asked to rejoin their writing program for adults, and was allowed. The dream had shaken me. So, before I got out of bed or changed my mind, I picked up my phone and sent an e-mail asking what I would need to do to reapply.

Mike took the last bite of the chocolate ice cream and jumped into the car with his parents. They headed off to the Olympic sized pool for the big swim meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift and won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations," said his father. His mother gave him a hug, even though he was wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet and Mike decided to eat the same ice cream. He thought that it was his luck ice cream and that it might help him win again.
He took first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. Since then, Mike has decided to have the same ice cream before every swim meet and has always won. Several months passed and Mike was feeling unbeatable. Although he wouldn't admit it, all the ice cream was adding pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long before the luck ice cream had lost its magic. Mike started to slip to second place and then third place in his races. His scores kept worsening and Mike felt really bad. He knew what was wrong. But he couldn't admit it to himself and especially to his parents. He did not want to disappoint them.
One day, his mother sat down at the table with him and said, “Mike, we know you love ice cream, but maybe it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Your father and 1 think it is making you gain weight. Is it OK for us to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go for the final competition? In order to strengthen your muscles, your father will go running with you three days a week. We think it will help you feel better.”

Jim loved adventures when he was a little boy. He was also a strong-minded boy who didn't give up easily.
One day when he was thirteen years old, he asked some friends to climb a mountain with him. The boys agreed and they even decided to camp at the top of the mountain. Then after they got ready, they set off. It was a beautiful day and the boys started climbing the mountain happily after they got to the foot of it. The mountain was very tall and it was tiring for the young boys to climb it, but everyone was passionate about the activity and no one complained.
When it got dark, they finally reached the top and they all shouted happily. Then Jim started counting. To his shock, there was one missing.
    “Where is Mike?” he asked.
All the boys looked around and they didn't see Mike around. They got concerned.
“Mike, Mike…” they started shouting. But there was no response. Worrying that Mike might be in danger, the boys knew they must return to find him. However after climbing the mountain for hours, they were all tired, so Jim asked the other boys to camp there and then he went down the mountain to find Mike alone.
Jim left the boys and started going down the mountain with a flashlight. Though tired, hungry and cold, he still didn't give up because of worrying about his friend. But things got even worse when his flashlight suddenly stopped working,
Jim almost became desperate. Out of despair, he started calling his friend’s name. To his joy, finally, he got a weak response. Mike was just nearby.
Jim felt his way in the darkness and walked toward his friend. Luckily the moon got out of the cloud and Jim could finally see again. He found his friend who had been trapped in a hole for hours. Jim managed to pull Mike up from the hole, and Mike was finally safe. However, Jim was so tired that he fell and rolled down a slope and lost consciousness.

Standing in front of the mirror one day, I came to the disturbing realization that I fell short of the requirements of my dream. The reflection that stared back was of a skinny brown-haired girl who stood a mere five feet tall. My entire life had been about dedication and trying to be the best dancer in my studio. I’d always had brilliant dreams and high ambitions. I never noticed how hard it might be to achieve something that you really wanted. Most people spend their whole lives searching for their calling, but I’ve known that I was born to be a dancer since I met my brilliant inspiring mentor, Lorie Bernier, 5 feet 1 inch. I’ve devoted sixteen years to helping my dream come true to be a lifelong dance teacher at my studio.
Last summer I attended an audition class in Boston taught by a highly respected Broadway dancer. At this seminar he explained the procedures for getting into a dance company. While listening and taking notes, I was thinking that I certainly had the experience, but there was one area where I didn’t quite measure up. He informed us that at most audition all dancers under 5 feet 6 inches are automatically eliminated or simply overlooked. He said that most casting directors were looking for the stereotyped dancer with long legs, a long neck and a size one waist. Standing half a foot under this height, I felt my heart drop to the floor.
It is really hard to listen to someone basically telling you, “Sorry, but you’ve been working really hard for sixteen years for nothing, so find a new dream.” Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. Dancing isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s more like an addiction. I exhibit every step heart and soul. Through dance I find a sense of pride and satisfaction that I don’t think anyone could understand or appreciate. To have all that I’ve ever wanted instantly shot down created a sick feeling in my stomach.
    Paragraph 1:
Furthermore, I knew that at that moment I could do one of two things.

However, it really doesn’t matter how high the disadvantages are against me, for I will rise above them.

My family immigrated to Canada when I was about one year old. In those early years, we did not have much money. Our home was a simple rented apartment, which was rather poorly furnished. There certainly was not enough money for expensive outings. As a result, our weekends were filled with simple pleasures that we could do for free, like picnics, bike rides, and my favorite—trips to the library.
Thanks to the library’s children’s section, I fell in love with stories—silly ones, moving ones, and even educational ones. I would have my parents read the books that we borrowed over and over again until we needed to return them, or I would page through them myself, imagining the stories in my head, even though I was too young to read the words.
When I was about five years old and finally started to read on my own, I had a curious thought: I knew we could get books from the library or buy them in store s if we had the money, but where did books come from?
I asked my mother this question, to which she replied that the stories I loved were created in the imaginations of people called “writers” These people then wrote them down so they could be s hared with others.
Four decades later, I still remember that moment. It was as though I had been struck by lightning. Then and there, I knew my purpose in this world. I would be one of those writers. I would create stories and share them with the world.

Chris looked at the clock again. Only five more minutes before school let out.
Just now,his Creative Learning teacher, Mrs. Griswell asked them to be prepared to share their favorite hobby with the class on Friday. And they were supposed to bring samples for show.
Chris sighed. No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby, he thought. His older brother, Wes,laughed at him about it enough-and his dad didn't think much of it,either.
On the bus,Chris heard others talking about the “hobby thing".Brian said he was going to bring his bowling trophies(保龄球奖杯)。Chris turned back around in his seat so he wouldn't have to talk to him anymore.
"Don't believe him,"Nick whispered."He's the worst bowler I've ever seen.He borrows the trophies from his dad,I guess. He's really fake."
At home,Chris puled out his bores of baseball cards. He liked baseball, even played some. But his really hobby let him express things from his imagination, and that’s what he liked most.Sorting through his cards, Chris began choosing some of the best ones.Yet he did not feel right about what he had decided.
Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked “My Favorite Hobby".He was ready for Friday, but some:thing still felt wrong. He walked out of his room, ignoring the sketchpad(草图本)on his desk.
Wednesday. After school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich, but he wasn't hungry. He didn't want to be fake like Brian, but he wasn't sure he had the courage to tell everyone his real hobby.
What would the guys think of him?
He chewed his sandwich slowly, thinking of Grandma. She was the reason he'd gotten interested in his hobby in the first place.“You have talent,” Grandma had told him proudly, admiring his work. And that felt really good.
Suddenly,Chris knew what he had to do.He dropped his sandwich on the plate and rushed to the phone.“Hi,Grandma, it's Chris.I need your help.”

Having been teaching anthropology (人类学) at Dartmouth College for 15 years, I still remember the day when I first encountered the book Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa, a very important book on the study of the social and cultural development of peoples.
When I was fourteen, I earned money in the summer by cutting lawns, and within a few weeks I had built up a body of customers. I got to know people by the flowers they planted, by the things they lost in the grass or stuck in the ground on purpose. I learned something about the measure of my neighbors by their preferred method of payment: by the job, by the month—or not at all.
Mr. Ballou fell into the last category, and he always had a reason why. On one day, he had no change for a fifty, on another he was simply out when I knocked on his door. Still, except for the money, he was a nice enough old guy, always waving his hat when he’d seen me from a distance. Sure, I kept track of the total, but I didn’t worry about the amount too much.
Then, one late afternoon in mid-July, the hottest time of the year, I was walking by his house and he opened the door, mentioned me to come inside. The hall was cool, shaded, and it took my eyes a minute to adjust to the dim light.
“I owe you,” Mr. Ballou, “but...”
I thought I’d save him the trouble of thinking of a new excuse. “No problem. Don’t worry about it.”
“The bank made a mistake in my account,” he continued, ignoring my words. “It will be cleared up in a day or two. But in the meantime I thought perhaps you could choose one or two volumes for a down payment.”
He gestured toward the walls and I saw that books were stacked (堆放) everywhere. It was like a library, except with no order to the arrangement.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.

    The Big Goal
Sam loved football. Ever since he could remember, his family spent Saturday mornings at the town football fields watching his big brother and sister play. It always looked like great fun, with kids running up and down over the grass, chasing the black and white ball as fast as they could.
Now that Sam was finally old enough to join the beginner team, he was feeling nervous. Sure, he had watched a lot of football games, but that didn't mean he was good at kicking the ball. He practiced with his teammates and had fun doing practice, but it wasn’t easy to kick the ball into the big white net when there was no one trying to stop him.
Now the morning of Sam's first game was here, and there was another player standing in front of him on the field. She was very tall, with long golden hair. The whistle blew, and she ran past Sam toward the ball.
Sam blinked. She was already gone, dribbling(运球)the ball toward the net. He had let her get past him! Sam ran after her, but it was hard to keep up.
The ball kept rolling back and forth. Sam was tired. A real game felt so much longer than practice.
Sam was about to stop running and take a short rest. He put his hands on his knees breathing heavily. Suddenly, the ball rolled to a stop right in front of him. He was wide open!
Sam knew what he had to do. He gave the ball short kicks all the way down the field. He set up just in front of the net and gave one last hard kick. The ball sailed into the net for a goal. Sam scored his first point!
Sam turned around to see that kids were jumping up and down in excitement. But they were wearing red clothes, not blue ones like Sam's. Sam blinked and looked at the goalkeeper in the net. It was his teammate. Briana.

Hours passed and there was no reply. Later that afternoon, my husband and I went to a store. On the way, I admitted I had tried again to apply for a writing program. He wasn’t angry and instead supported me. Minutes later, when we reached the store, my phone rang. It was from the director of Hamline University’s writing program. I explained the turn of the events in my life, my dream, and my desire to rejoin the program. She invited me back.
    Paragraph 2:
Then a few weeks later, I began my courses. Although I seldom saw my family members, we still kept in touch. And my husband has been my greatest supporter as I have worked on my goal. Paragraph 2:
However, it really doesn’t matter how high the disadvantages are against me, for I will rise above them. It’s time for me to “keep my nose to the grindstone” because despite what anyone sees, the only direction of my life is going up. Whether I end up becoming a Broadway dancer or opening a local dance studio doesn’t matter, because I will do one or the other by choice, not because I am not qualified. I’m glad at knowing I’m not alone in this battle. My mentor, Lorie Bernier, who stands 5 feet 1 inch with great achievements in dancing, always inspires me. So I will keep to my dancing dream, committing my time and energy to it heart and soul.

She read my composition aloud in front of the whole class and spoke highly of me, which inspired me greatly. The teacher also recommended my composition to the newspaper, and my article appeared in the newspaper. Recently, I won the first prize in the national primary and secondary school composition contest, awarded the title of the future little writer and praised by the principal in the conference, which made me glad. I would work harder to become a real writer, and write more and better works.

"I design things. I mean. I design clothes and accessories. There they were-the giggles and the sneers. "I'm a fashion designer." He brought out his sketchbook and flipped through pages showing his designs for jackets and caps, pants and shirts. There were still a few snickers.

    Paragraph 1:
Mr. Ballou encouraged me to read, borrow or keep the books I like. Facing so many books for the first time, I had no idea which one to choose. Nice enough, he searched for me and handed a fairly thick book and asked me to tell him what the book was about the next week. It was my first encounter with world literature, and I was so impressed by the power a novel could contain and absorbed in reading all those vivid characters and the elegant, simple language.
    Paragraph 2:
To this day, thirty years later, I clearly remember this experience. Now I am a teacher teaching anthropology at college. For that year, Mr. Ballou never paid me some money for cutting his lawns but led me to the road that is far more valuable than money. A book, if it arrives before you at the right moment, in the proper season, will change the course of all your life.

Standing rooted to the spot, Sam went blushed at that and got butterflies in his stomach. Now the other team took the lead. All his teammates stared at Sam, which made Sam feel even regretful. He felt thick and heavy in his mouth so that he could not utter a word. But the game was continuing fiercely. Briana threw the ball back out onto the field and the players all ran after it. Sam didn’t move. He thought he might cry. He wanted to quit soccer forever.
Briana ran over to Sam and put her arm around him. She whispered, “It doesn’t matter! It’s a great kick.” Sam looked at her face to see if she was joking, but Briana smiled, “Now run down there and kick another one just like it.” Rekindling his confidence. Sam ran towards the ball. With the perfect cooperation with his teammates, Sam kicked another goal, this time, to the opponent’s net. Sam stood in the center, eyes shining and his heart thundering with excitement. At last, when the coach blew the whistle, the game ended 2 to 1. Sam and his teammates were all wild with extreme excitement at the hard-won result.
