In 2007, the African Union announced an ambitious project—to plant the Great Green Wall (GGW), a band of trees that would stretch the length of the Sahel.
The GGW is an ecological restoration project designed by African people for African people. Heavy rains, droughts, wildfires and landslides have all become common throughout the world. But nowhere is quite like the Sahel. In this huge African region, climate change has materialized in a dramatic manner. In some cases, the severe conditions have left people with no option other than to migrate elsewhere to survive. It was with all of this in mind that the extraordinary, but heavily debated project was first put forward.
Fourteen years have passed since the initiative formally kicked off. The stated goal was to create a 15-kilometre-wide, 8, 000-kilometre-long green belt of trees and other plants that, by 2030, would span(跨越)the entire width of the Sahel, from Senegal to Djibouti. Overall, 100 million hectares(公顷)of land would be restored by 2030. Once completed, it was announced, the wall could end up capturing(俘获)250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while its creation and upkeep could create ten million jobs in rural areas.
Looking at the project as a whole, there’s still a long way to go. According to a status report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, about four million hectares of degraded land have been restored. This means that progress towards the 100 million hectares target stands at just four per cent.
“When we started restoring the soil, we realized the area at risk was much wider than we initially thought,” explains Elvis Paul Tangem, the African Union’s GGW coordinator. “We had few funds to push the initiative as much as we wanted to. There was skepticism among investors, who didn’t understand the project, but also among the African states themselves, which needed time to figure out if the GGW was a priority.”
4.What is the purpose of the GGW project?
A.To improve local ecology. B.To develop rural economy.
C.To predict climate patterns. D.To strengthen regional ties.
5.What do the statistics in paragraph 3 show of the initiative?
A.The service period. B.The total budget.
C.The targeted groups. D.The expected benefits.
6.How does Elvis Paul Tangem feel about the project?
    A.Skeptical. B.Worried. C.Confident. D.Satisfied.
7.What message does the author intend to convey in the text?
    A.African countries should stand together.
B.The progress of the GGW project is slow.
C.Fighting climate change is our top priority.
D.Natural disasters are worse than we thought.
根据第二段的“Heavy rains, droughts, wildfires and landslides have all become common throughout the world. But nowhere is quite like the Sahel. In this huge African region, climate change has materialized in a dramatic manner. In some cases, the severe conditions have left people with no option other than to migrate elsewhere to survive. It was with all of this in mind that the extraordinary, but heavily debated project was first put forward.(暴雨、干旱、野火和山体滑坡在世界各地很普遍。 故选A。
根据第三段内容“Fourteen years have passed since the initiative formally kicked off. Once completed, it was announced, the wall could end up capturing(俘获)250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while its creation and upkeep could create ten million jobs in rural areas.(该倡议正式启动已经过去14年了。
根据最后一段的“‘When we started restoring the soil, we realized the area at risk was much wider than we initially thought,’ explains Elvis Paul Tangem, the African Union’s GGW coordinator. ‘We had few funds to push the initiative as much as we wanted to. There was skepticism among investors, who didn’t understand the project, but also among the African states themselves, which needed time to figure out if the GGW was a priority.’(“当我们开始恢复土壤时,我们意识到处于危险中的区域比我们最初想象的要大得多,”非洲联盟GGW协调员埃尔维斯·保罗·坦吉姆(Elvis Paul Tangem)解释说。
根据倒数第二段内容“Looking at the project as a whole, there’s still a long way to go. According to a status report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, about four million hectares of degraded land have been restored. This means that progress towards the 100 million hectares target stands at just four per cent.( 从整体来看,这个项目还有很长的路要走。

When Mexican scientist of the evolution of animal behavior, Laura Cuaya, moved to Hungary for her postdoctoral studies in Budapest, she brought her pet dog, Kun-kun, along for the ride. Cuaya couldn't help noticing how locals warmed to dogs. This prompted her naturally curious scientific mind to start asking questions. “Here people are talking all the time to Kun-kun, but I always wonder if Kun-kun can recognize that people in Budapest speak Hungarian, not Spanish?” So she set out to find an answer through a scientific study.
Cuaya and her colleagues decided to use brain images from MRI scanning to shed light on her hunch. They worked with dogs of various ages that had, until the experiment, only heard their owners speak just one of the two languages, Spanish or Hungarian. Not surprisingly, getting the dogs to happily take part in the experiment took some creative coaxing and animal training! The researchers first needed to teach Kun-kun and her 17 fellow participating dogs including a labradoodle, a golden retriever and Australian shepherds, to lie still in a brain scanner. Their pet parents were always present, and they could leave the scanner at any point.
The research team played children's book classic The Little Prince in both Spanish and Hungarian while scanning the dogs' brains with an MRI machine. They were looking for evidence that their brains reacted differently to a familiar and unfamiliar language. The researchers also played scrambled versions of the story to find out if dogs could distinguish between speech and non-speech.
The images reveal that dogs' brains show different patterns of activity for an unfamiliar language than for a familiar one—the first time anyone has proved, researchers say, that a non-human brain can distinguish between two languages. This means that the sounds and rhythms of a familiar language are accessible to non-humans.
Interestingly, the team also found that the brains of older dogs were more skilled at detecting speech “suggesting a role for the amount of language exposure”. They suggest that dogs have refined their ability to distinguish between human languages over the long process of domestication.
8.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The background of the study. B.The significance of the study.
C.The concern of the researcher. D.The introduction to the researcher.
9.What did Cuaya consider when choosing dogs for study?
    A.Age limits. B.Brain patterns. C.Language exposure. D.Owners' commands.
10.The results of the study are ________.
    A.practical B.contradictory C.compromising D.groundbreaking
11.Which of the following can be the best title?
    A.Dogs Can Tell Foreign Languages
    B.Dog Brains Have Different Patterns
C.Old Dogs Know More About Human Speech
D.Dogs Can Differ Speech From Non-Speech

“I’m not a reader.” It’s a common reply that Julia Torres, a teacher-librarian in Denver Public School, has heard throughout her 16-year career. She’s seen students tear up books, throw them away or check them out only to immediately return them all because they didn’t have confidence in their ability to read.
As a librarian, Torres feels strongly that libraries should be spaces of liberation, places where students can develop a love of reading at any stage. Reading is a skill that everyone can grow to love, but too many negative experiences during a child’s literacy (读写能力) education can result in boredom, lack of interest or even anger. When a student has a poor experience like being shamed for their reading choices, they can begin to associate reading with painful feelings of insecurity, shame and stress.
To prevent reading disorder (阅读障碍) practices, as Torres notes, librarians first can build an inclusive (内容丰富的) library where classified collections can make it easier for students to find out the books they want and also help identify gaps in the collections. Reevaluating librarians’ role is necessary, which allows students to take control of the library and have a say in what’s purchased for the collection, directly exciting students’ reading interest. Instead of hosting traditional book fairs where students have to pay for books, it is better to open up a True Book Fair, where students are invited to choose books intentionally to their interests without any costs. Librarians are recommended to read what students are reading. Another two important approaches to preventing reading disorder are to take a look at the library policies and redefine (重新定义) what counts as reading. It is necessary to get rid of fines, check-out limits, security gates, and punishment policies. Plus, students are encouraged to listen to audiobooks or read picture books. Find a way to teach important skills like comprehension or critical thinking with the texts that excite and interest students.
12.What does the underlined sentence “I’m not a reader” in Paragraph 1 infer?
A.Some students are not interested in reading.
B.Some students have no ability to read books.
C.Some students don’t borrow books from the library.
D.Some students haven’t tried to read for entertainment.
13.What is directly linked with exciting students’ reading interests?
A.Getting rid of library rules. B.Making their own choices.
C.Librarians’ recommendation. D.Reducing charges caused by reading.
14.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What leads to students’ difficulty in reading.
B.How negative reading experiences affect students.
C.How to reduce reading disorder as student librarians.
D.Why to decrease reading disorder as student librarians.
15.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To do a research on reading disorder.
B.To offer suggestions to the librarians.
C.To analyze why reading disorder forms.
D.To draw attention to reading disorder prevention.
通过文章划线句下文“She’s seen students tear up books, throw them away or check them out only to immediately return them all because they didn’t have confidence in their ability to read. 故选A项。
通过文章第三段“Reevaluating librarians’ role is necessary, which allows students to take control of the library and have a say in what’s purchased for the collection, directly exciting students’ reading interest.
通过文章第三段“To prevent reading disorder (阅读障碍) practices, as Torres notes, librarians first can build an inclusive library (Torres指出,为了预防阅读障碍,图书馆员首先可以建立一个内容丰富的图书馆)”以及“Librarians are recommended to read what students are reading.
通读全文,再根据文章第三段“Another two important approaches to preventing reading disorder ”可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是让读者注意阅读障碍的预防。故选D项。

36.doubling 37.are burdened 38.restrictions 39.fewer 40.without
    41.shared 42.that 43.practical 44.which 45.though##however
分析句子成分,主语是those,that don’t是省略的定语从句,修饰前面的those;谓语动词是burden,和those是被动关系。
故填without。
“It’s reported that...” 故填that。
故填which。
故填though/however。

    The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again

My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study. She was graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I would be unable to make it down in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn’t able to be there for her on this special occasions.
While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister’s graduation, she commented, “Well, if you want to go, just go ahead!" I couldn’t believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. “Just make sure you get permission from administrator (行政主管),” she added. My heart sank. The administration at my school was infamous for denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost didn’t bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time. But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affects the administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled myself for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read, just to make sure I’d understood. Approval? I couldn’t believe my luck!
Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was able to change my ticket to arrive the day before my sister’s graduation. With news this fantastic, I was bursting to tell my sister. But, fingers on the dial((拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn’t it be much more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a ring of the doorbell. What if I couldn’t arrive in a box?
