The Arctic has long fascinated people across the world, so it’s no wonder that stories from this region have inspired movies and TV shows. Its frozen landscapes make the perfect setting for stories of survival, showcasing how both people and animals adapt to the ice and cold. Here are four of our favorite Arctic shows and movies.
    Nanook of the North (1922)

This silent film from 1922 is a classic story of man versus (与…对抗) nature. It tells the story of an Inuit hunter named Nanook “The Bear” and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh environment. Nanook of the North is one of the earliest documentaries — although some of the scenes were staged. Viewers are invited to witness how the Inuit people live. Audiences also see how the Inuit construct igloos one block at a time into icy, domed structures.

Balto is not only an inspiring true story but an important look at the difficulties of Arctic travel and the brave people — and animals — that are relied on to save the day when people need them most.
    Arctic Tale (2007)

Arctic Tale is a US documentary film about the life of a polar bear and her cubs as well as a walrus and her calves. Footage (素材)used for the film was shot over a 15-year period. The documentary gives an inside look at how these.two Arctic animals grow from babies into adulthood as they learn how to hunt and survive in dangerous conditions. Throughout the film, the narrator reminds viewers that climate change is melting the Arctic ice and threatening the animals living there.
    Ice Road Truckers (2007—2017)

This US reality TV series features truck drivers who must cross frozen lakes and rivers in remote Arctic land. They risk their lives to deliver much-needed supplies to small towns, diamond mines and offshore oil rigs (钻塔). B
Last year I lived in Chile for half a year as an exchange student with the American Field Service. Compared to most visitors, I didn’t travel much. I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I went to school every day, in uniform. I had good days and bad days and days that I didn’t understand.
Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp in the Atacama Desert. There is no disco, no shopping center, no museum or beach. Driveways must be watered daily to keep the dust down.
When I arrived here, I was scared. It was so different from the urban middle-class America I was accustomed to. There were lost dogs on the streets, and a constant cloud of brick-colored dust came from the mine. There was no downtown, few smoothly paved(用砖石铺的)streets, and little to do for amusement. The people worked extremely hard. Rain was a rare phenomenon; earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.
I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was barely able to communicate and desperate for one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldn’t speak the thoughts in my head— and there were so many.
Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression toward the people to lack of appetite or weight gain and depression. I was required to overcome all difficulties. Being an exchange student is not easy.
As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy — for which I received half a credit in global studies. Somehow my high school couldn’t figure out a way to relate my experience to its curriculum.
But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept as well as to succeed in another culture. I now know the world is my community and have a much deeper understanding of both myself and others.

Sports fandom is about more than just entertainment. It can boost your self-esteem (自尊) and make you happier — and you don’t have to root for the winning team to gain the benefits.
Being a sports fan is a “very psychologically healthy activity,” says Daniel Wann, professor at Murray State University whose research program centers on the psychology of sport fandom. Fandom connects us to other like-minded people, which satisfies our human need for belonging, he says.
These relationships are significant: People who identify as sports fans have higher levels of self-esteem, lower levels of loneliness and tend to be more satisfied with their lives compared to those who aren’t interested in sports, Wann says. Fans tend to have more access to social support, help and resources as well. Research suggests that when people have support from their communities, they have better health.
Beyond bonding, fans get to enjoy the psychological benefits of winning, even if they have nothing to do with the players or games, says Stephen Reysen, associate professor at Texas A&M University-Commerce who studies identity and fandom.
“Individuals feel that the fan interest (in this case a sport team) is a part of them,”   Reysen says. “So when the team is winning, you feel like you are winning even though you are not a player.”
    Of course, teams sometimes lose.
So, why do people continue to put their faith behind teams that tend to lose? People who feel a strong psychological connection to a team are more likely to root for a team when they’re having a losing season, Reysen says.
“Sports fandom has nothing to do with the outcome of a game,” Wann says. For example, if a pizza restaurant continually got your order wrong, you’d likely switch to a more reliable one. But because being a fan is so central to people’s identities, people are willing to accept defeat and continue to be loyal to a team.
Being part of a fan community can also help people cope with losses. A 2019 study found that watching a football game with other fans helps to ease the negative psychological effects of losing.
“For fans of the losing team, sharing the pain may have protected them from losing self-esteem,” Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, co-author of the study and professor of communication at The Ohio State University said in a release.
46.According to the passage, why do sports fans feel happier?
A.Because they could gain the benefits from the winning team.
B.Because they can share pains and happiness with people who have the common interests.
C.Because they could have a low level of self-esteem.
D.Because most of them are optimistic.
47.What is the significance of the relationships between sports fans?
A.Sports fans have support from their favorite teams.
B.Sports fans have higher levels of loneliness.
C.Sports fans are likely more content with their lives.
D.Sports fans tend to compare themselves to those who aren’t interested in sports.
48.According to the passage, if the team has a losing season, the sports fans may .
    A.display their identities B.have a boost of self-esteem
C.not support the team any more D.have a negative psychology period
49.According to the passage, what can help sports fans deal with losses of their team?
A.Being part of the team. B.Ordering a pizza in a different restaurant.
C.Sharing the pain with family members. D.The loyalty to the team.
50.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Sports fans have a closer relationship with other like-mined people.
B.Sports fans have higher self-esteem and are more satisfied with their lives.
C.Sports fans always put their faith behind their favorite teams.
D.Sports fandom has nothing to do with the outcome of a game.

Many years ago, I bumped into an old friend of mine. He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.
I thought of his dogged (顽强的) perseverance. Was it smart or foolish? What could he have achieved? Had he quit his dream of acting and moved on? Our culture does not look kindly upon quitting. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it eventually results in success.
We chant (反复喊着) “Winners never quit” and “If at first you don’t succeed, try again. ” We lap up (欣然接受) stories of persistence, of the author who submitted stories for years before her novels were published or of the athlete who trained since childhood to win gold at the Olympics.
Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable (无数的) others who trained every day of their lives and never made the cut.
We all agree that doing the same things and expecting a different result is unwise. So why do we believe that persevering through failure after failure is a good idea? We consider quitting in the face of failure to be weak. We believe that perseverance is the key to success. Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.
Our society believes that anything is possible, as long as you “believe”. But not everyone can make it. Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do. Obviously, if you enjoy a pursuit, regardless of its outcome, you should continue. If you knew your novel would never be published, would you want to write? If you could never be a champion swimmer, would you still train? Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.
Failure is not always the path to success. Sometimes, failure is the door to something new.
51.What do we know about the author’s old friend?
A.He was dissatisfied with his acting performance.
B.He switched his dream of acting to something else.
C.He failed in acting because of a lack of persistence.
D.He failed in all attempts to become a successful actor.
52.The author mentioned JK Rowling mainly to ______.
A.explain how she achieved success in writing
B.show that success doesn’t happen to everyone
C.prove that success favors those who are perseverant
D.encourage readers to hold onto their dream until they succeed
53.What is the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 4?
A.Made out of their dreams. B.Met the required standard.
C.Improved their performances. D.Promised to be good players.
54.What does the author advise us to do if we’ve failed many times?
A.Make an effort to try new things. B.Stick to your goal until we succeed.
C.Wait for the right time and good luck. D.Ask friends or family members for help.
55.What is the author’s attitude toward perseverance?
A.It makes anything possible. B.It is not necessary for success.
C.It is not the only part of success. D.It works well regards of outcome.
根据第一段的“He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.”
根据第四段的“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published.”
根据第四段的“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person.”
根据倒数第二段的“Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do.”和“Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.(有时候,把你的精力放在其他事情上是明智的。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第三段的“Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.”

In June 2011, my life changed and so did my family’s. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I came downstairs all ready for the family swim. Right before I got into the pool, my mom called me inside. She sat me down and waited for my dad and brothers to come to join us. Then, our parents told us the worst news imaginable-- my dad had been diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer(结肠癌).
The news hit hard of course. However, in my head, my dad was a superman. As his daughter, I knew that cancer wasn’t going to beat him. I just went out and swam.
As weeks went on, life didn’t change much within our house. My mom still went to work; my brothers and I still went to school; and my dad still worked while also meeting his doctor. However, I didn’t realized how much this new diagnosis was going to change my life.
As treatment progressed with my dad’s cancer, I couldn’t depend on him for things he usually did. And with my brothers being away at college, I had to take on a lot more responsibility. But that was not the hardest part of this new journey. It was the fear. The fear that I could lose my Dad. The fear that I could get a call saying that he was in bad condition. The fear that I could never talk to him again. Yet with all these fears, there was never a doubt in my mind that my dad would beat this cancer. He was a superman.
The day of my dad’s surgery finally came. It was Father’s Day and I had my soccer game that day. I won my battle on the field and my dad won his in the hospital.
May 2013, my dad was completely cancer free. Though this journey proved to be a few of the hardest years of my life, it also proved to me how wonderful my dad really is.
56.What happened to the author’s family in June 2011? (no more than 10 words)

57.How did the author behave after hearing the news from her mother? (no more than 10 words)

    57.She lived as usual.
    58.Operation.
    59.In May 2013.
    60.Open.
第一段“In June 2011... I remember the day like it was yesterday.... -- my dad had been diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer.” 2011年6月我记忆犹新——我父亲被诊断出患有第三期结肠癌。 Her father developed a serious disease./ Her father was diagnosed with serious Colon Cancer。
根据第二段“The news hit hard of course. However, in my head, my dad was a superman. As his daughter, I knew that cancer wasn’t going to beat him. I just went out and swam.”和第三段“As weeks went on, life didn’t change much within our house. My mom still went to work; my brothers and I still went to school” 可知,当然,这条消息对我们打击很大。 故答案为She lived as usual。
根据第二段“my dad still worked while also meeting his doctor”爸爸边工作边看病;以及第 五段划线词所在句子The day of my dad’s surgery finally came.后的“It was Father’s Day and I had my soccer game that day. I won my battle on the field and my dad won his in the hospital.”
根据最后一段“May 2013, my dad was completely cancer free.” In May 2013.
My father is a caring engineer, ready to help others. No matter which neighbor's household appliance is broken, he is willing to help deal with it for free。
