My way to stay young is simple: Give full attention to the part of you that’s young and growing---your brain. Keep your mind active and your body will stay young, too. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning one new thing every day.
Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a house wife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist.
Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know I man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.
    A
    Canyoning
The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.
It was first done in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people jump from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).
    Diving
Diving is not popular with British people. The difficulties of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough, but the coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have some of the best diving in the world.
The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133, www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688, www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills.
    Surfing
The best surfing places in the UK are on the southwest coast where it is warmer, especially in Cornwall. The best time of year to surf in the UK is late summer and autumn.
The British Surfing Association (01479 861256, www.britsurf.co.uk) has a list of famous surf schools around the country.
    Rock climbing
The most popular natural rocks in Britain include the Peak District, the Lake District, while large areas of Scotland are a climber’s ideal place. Climbing courses and climbing walls can be found on the website of the British Mountaineering Council (0870 010 4878, www.thebmc.co.uk).
21.If a couple with their child of 15 join in Canyoning for a day, they will pay ________.
    A.£130 B.£160 C.£260 D.£320
22.Which of the following is NOT well accepted by British people?
    A.Canyoning. B.Diving. C.Surfing. D.Rock climbing.
23.This passage is most probably intended for ________.
A.Visitors who want to pay a visit to Britain
B.Visitors in Britain who are keen on extreme sports

D.Travelers who are enthusiastic about camping in China
    21.C 22.B 23.B
由Canyoning第二段中的“A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16). (半天的峡谷之旅费用£50 (16岁以下儿童30£))”可知,半天旅行一个成人是50英镑,16岁以下的孩子30英镑,所以两个成人加一个15岁的孩子一天所需要的费用是(50+50+30)*2=260。故选C项。
22.细节理解题。由Diving第一段中的“Diving is not popular with British people. (潜水不受英国人欢迎)”可知,潜水不受英国人的欢迎。故选B项。
    23.推理判断题。由文章小标题“Canyoning (蹦谷)”、“Diving (潜水)”、“Surfing (冲浪)”、“Rock climbing (攀岩)”及内容可知,文章详细介绍了英国四种运动项目以及相应的组织机构的相关信息,由此可以判断文章的写作对象是对英国极限运动项目感兴趣的人群。故选B项。

Mr. Jafri is a 44- year- old artist from England. Last year, the coronavirus spread and many countries went into lockdown(封锁;在家隔离). Rather than feeling stuck, Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference”.
He decided to create the world’ s largest painting. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic(大流行病). He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.
The painting is huge—over 1600 square meters. It took Jafri seven months to create the painting. He worked long hours—often up to 20 hours a day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1000 paintbrushes and 6300 liters of paint to create the painting.
Jafri hoped that his painting, called “The Journey of Humanity”, would help bring the world together during a difficult time. He included the children’s drawings in the artwork.
When he finished last September, he had set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest painting.
The painting was split up into 70 large pieces. Jafri hoped that by selling the pieces, he could raise 30 million dollars.
But when the auction ended on March 22, Jafri did much better than that. And he didn’t have to split up the pieces. The whole artwork was sold for 62 million dollars.
Andre Abdoune, a French businessman, bought all 70 pieces. “The painting was very powerful when I saw it,” Mr. Abdoune said. “And for me, it would have been a mistake to separate the pieces.”
24.What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To persuade the readers.
C.To attract readers’ interest. D.To provide background information.
25.Why did Jafri decide to create this painting?
A.To raise money for children. B.To set a Guinness World Record.
C.To kill time under a tight lockdown. D.To get everybody together during the pandemic.
26.Which of the following best describes Andre Abdoune?
    A.Mean. B.Kind. C.Generous. D.Selfish.
27.What’s the best title of this text?
A.The Painting of Mr. Jafri. B.A Great Artist.
C.The Journey of Humanity. D.A Guinness World Record.

Earth’s glaciers (冰川) is disappearing quickly due to global warming. Scientists warn that glaciers will disappear from the mainland US within decades. And their rapid melting is dangerous to society and the natural systems we rely on.
Sea level rise is perhaps the most serious influence. Coastal towns and cities face increasing storms and floods. Alongside this, the loss of freshwater from glaciers means less to drink, to water crops, or to use in generating electricity.
These vast rivers of ice perform a key role in regulating the Earth’s atmosphere. Ice cools air and reflects the sun’s heat away from the planet’s surface, acting as an air conditioning system. Melting glaciers reduce this cooling potential, but researchers have discovered that as meltwaters decrease this also allows certain bacteria in rivers to give off more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Data gathered by the World Glacier Monitoring Service more than a decade ago suggested that the loss of glaciers threatened the livelihood of more than two billion people relying on meltwater in nearby rivers.
Glaciologist Jennifer Wadham told the World Economic Forum in 2021 that glacier loss is an “approaching threat to life”. She notes that glaciers “are lifelines to us, through their freshwaters, but also how they connect with the very weak environments and ecosystems around them as life-support machines in many ways.”
One study from Cornell University says the rise will probably happen quickly, leaving nations with the disastrous situation of more people on less land. By 2100, there could be as many as two billion climate affected people pushing inland from rising seas. Preventing the damage say, researchers means containing greenhouse gas levels and planning for a vastly different world.
28.What is the effect of the melting of glaciers?
A.The fall of sea level. B.The drop in temperature.
C.The lack of fresh water. D.Increasing storms for inland towns.
29.Why do vast rivers of ice play a key part in regulating the atmosphere?
A.Because melting increases cooling potential. B.Because ice warms the air and reflects the heat.
C.Because melt waters can take in carbon dioxide. D.Because ice functions as an air conditioner.
30.What is the meaning of the underlined word in the fourth paragraph?
    A.Endangered. B.Connected. C.Improved. D.Maintained.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Coastal cities will be flooded with people.
B.The world in the future may differ a lot from what it is now.
C.Greenhouse gas levels make little difference to sea levels.
D.Fewer than 2 billion people will be affected in the years ahead.
    28.C 29.D 30.A 31.B
根据第二段关键句“Alongside this, the loss of freshwater from glaciers means less to drink, to water crops, or to use in generating electricity.”(除此之外,冰川淡水的流失意味着饮用、灌溉作物或用于发电的资源减少。)
根据第三段关键句“These vast rivers of ice perform a key role in regulating the Earth’s atmosphere. Ice cools air and reflects the sun’s heat away from the planet’s surface, acting as an air conditioning system.”(这些巨大的冰河在调节地球大气层方面起着关键作用。
根据下文关键句“Glaciologist Jennifer Wadham told the World Economic Forum in 2021 that glacier loss is an “approaching threat to life”.”(Glaciologist Jennifer Wadham在2021世界经济论坛上说冰川损失是“对生命的威胁”。) 故选A项。
根据最后一段关键句“Preventing the damage say, researchers means containing greenhouse gas levels and planning for a vastly different world.”(研究人员说,防止损害意味着控制温室气体水平,并规划一个截然不同的世界。)
    D
“After 30 years of reading cardiograms (心电图), I can never tell whether it’s from a man or woman, or the age of the person,” said Eric Topol, a cardiologist from Scripps Research in La Jolla, California. “A machine can detect if a person has anaemia (贫血) or other difficult diagnoses (诊断).”
Topol is excited not only about how machines are already better than experts at spotting problems, but how they can discover patterns that experts wouldn’t even notice. “In Japan, doctors are using machine vision to pick up polyps (息肉) in real time, and detecting whether or not they could be cancerous and whether they should have a biopsy,” he said. “Machines will not replace physicians—but physicians making use of AI will soon replace those not using it.”
Still, these are early days for the application of AI in healthcare. Pearse Keane, a consultant doctor at Moorrelds Eye Hospital, has been leading a collaboration between Moor fields and Google’s Deep Mind Health. In 2018, he famously published a proof-of-concept paper in Nature showing the erst successful AI diagnosis for eye disease. “The algorithm that we’ve developed isn’t in clinical use at the minute, so we’re trying to implement this now,” Keane said.
Keane mentioned the INSIGHT study, which is looking into eye disease and its link to other conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病). “We are using the eye as a window to the rest of the body. With deep learning, we can now look at a retinal (视网膜)photograph and say: ‘This is a woman, she’s 58 years old, she’s not a smoker or a diabetic, her BMI is around 25, and her blood pressure is around 150 over 85’. Now, to me, that’s staggering.” Keane said.
The INSIGHT study is analysing more than three million OCT scans from around 300,000 patients. “We now know, for every person having had a retinal scan here, who’s gone on to develop a heart attack or diabetes,” he said. “The reason why we’re excited is that we think that if we can get the appropriate data sets and learn them deeply, we can find much more in the back of the eye about the health of the rest of the body.”
“The application of AI for healthcare and medicine is about precision and accuracy, but that’s not all,” said Topol. The most important aspect is how AI can promote a stronger human connection between doctor and patient. “We see patients in single digit numbers of minutes. And that’s not enough, you need the gift of time, which AI can give back,” he said. “Next year this will be the standard,” he believes. “Rather than doctors being data clerks, they will be making eye contact with patients. There’s no algorithm for empathy. That’s a human characteristic that we have to develop and get back in the way it used to be.”
32.According to Topol, machines in healthcare ______.
A.can pick up polyps B.will replace doctors
C.are already better than experts D.can discover if a patient has diseases
33.In paragraph 4, Keane mentioned a retinal photograph of a patient mainly to ______.
A.evaluate the effects of AI in healthcare B.introduce a patient’s personal information
C.explain how deep learning detects diseases D.show the present outcome of AI’s application
34.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.AI has been the standard of some advanced hospitals.
B.AI can improve the relationship between doctors and patients.
C.With deep learning, the researchers can find the secrets of the eye.
D.Doctors will spend more time on face-to-face communication with patients.
35.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The AI’s application on diagnosis. B.Successful AI diagnosis for eye disease.
C.The great clinical progress in deep learning. D.The impact of AI on promoting human connection.

根据第一段最后一句““A machine can detect if a person has anaemia (贫血) or other difficult diagnoses (诊断).”(“一台机器可以检测一个人是否患有贫血或其他难以诊断的疾病。”)”
根据第三段最后两句“In 2018, he famously published a proof-of-concept paper in Nature showing the erst successful AI diagnosis for eye disease. “The algorithm that we’ve developed isn’t in clinical use at the minute, so we’re trying to implement this now,” Keane said.(2018年,他在《自然》杂志上发表了一篇著名的概念证明论文,展示了人工智能首次成功诊断眼部疾病。“我们开发的算法目前还没有用于临床,所以我们正在尝试实现它,”基恩说。)”再结合第四段的内容可推知,基恩提到了患者的视网膜照片,主要是为了展示人工智能应用的当前成果。故选D项。
34.主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段的“ “The reason why we’re excited is that we think that if we can get the appropriate data sets and learn them deeply, we can find much more in the back of the eye about the health of the rest of the body.”(我们感到兴奋的原因是,我们认为,如果我们能获得适当的数据集,并深入了解它们,我们可以在眼睛后面发现更多关于身体其他部分的健康。)”和最后一段的“ “Next year this will be the standard,” he believes. “Rather than doctors being data clerks, they will be making eye contact with patients. There’s no algorithm for empathy. That’s a human characteristic that we have to develop and get back in the way it used to be.”(“明年这将成为标准,”他相信。“医生不再是数据员,他们将与病人进行眼神交流。同理心是没有算法的。这是人类的一种特征,我们必须发展,并回到过去的状态。”)”可知,促进医生和患者之间更牢固的人际关系意味着需要多进行交流,因此我们能从最后两段中学到医生将花更多的时间与病人面对面的交流。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。根据第二段最后一句““Machines will not replace physicians—but physicians making use of AI will soon replace those not using it.”(“机器不会取代医生,但使用人工智能的医生将很快取代不使用人工智能的医生。”)”、第三段第三句“In 2018, he famously published a proof-of-concept paper in Nature showing the erst successful AI diagnosis for eye disease.(2018年,他在《自然》杂志上发表了一篇著名的概念证明论文,展示了人工智能首次成功诊断眼部疾病。)”,以及第四段第三句“With deep learning, we can now look at a retinal (视网膜)photograph and say: ‘This is a woman, she’s 58 years old, she’s not a smoker or a diabetic, her BMI is around 25, and her blood pressure is around 150 over 85’.(通过深度学习,我们现在可以看一张视网膜照片并说:“这是一位女性,她58岁,她不是吸烟者或糖尿病患者,她的BMI 约为 25,她的血压约为150超过85”。)” 故选A项。

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in haste (匆忙). He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year.
He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was gayly passing on. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country,” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak our language.
But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in distress (困境). He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless, meant, “We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers.
    Paragraph 1:
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought._______________________________
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here is a whole bundle of books.”__________________________________
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” said he, “I give my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry,” adding “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.” His father asked the reason. He explained it was a German family who didn’t have enough clothes to wear. Edward’s explanation made his father understand what had happened and he expressed that he couldn’t agree more with him. “I will buy you some books,” promised father.
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here is a whole bundle of books.” To his surprise, the books were exactly what he wanted. Holding the books his father gave him in his arms, Edward felt he was the happiest boy in the world. He felt the sweetness of helping others. A few days later, Edward met the family again, and they still thanked him thousand times. He knew that help means we all can give a hand to people in need under any circumstances.
