    ●从容说课
    This is the furth perid f Unit 2 which fcuses n listening. In this lessn,there are tw parts. One f it is t cnslidate the sentence structure f indirect speech and direct speech. The ther part cncerns listening in which tw passages are included. Bth f them are abut the tpic f English.
    Listening is becming mre and mre imprtant. Teaching students t listen in prper way is the aim f this part. A gd listener shuld be able t predict accrding t sme hints such as the tpic,the questins listed,etc.,t listen with the purpse f finding useful infrmatin and t summarize. S this part shuld be taught accrding t the aim.
    In it,we’ll first have a revisin. It deals with the exercise talking n page 48.Thught the usage f the sentence patterns in daily life,students can master this grammar part much better. Their ability f using language will be practiced as well in this part. And then we’ll listen t tw passages. In this part,t train students’ listening skills,I will design sme questins abut the passage s that students can listen n purpse f finding useful infrmatin. Besides,students can practice the ability f predicting what will be heard in this part. At last,a discussin will be rganized. This is t train students’ ability f using language and reading critically.

    Step 1 Greetings and Revisin
    Greet the whle class as usual.
    T:Yesterday we learnt the sentence patterns which express cmmands and requests. Wh can tell me smething abut it?
    S:T express cmmands,we can use “D...;D nt d...”.
    S:T express requests,we can use “;D nt ;Will yu d...?Wuld yu d...?Can yu d...?Culd yu d...?”
    T:Yes,yu are right. Then hw can we change them int Indirect Speech?
    S:If it is a cmmand,we can use “sb. tld/rdered sb. t d...;sb. tld/rdered nt t d...”.
    S:If it is a request,we can use “sb. asked sb (nt) t d”.
    T:Please tell which ne is the right answer.
    “____________,”Li Ming said t his teacher.
    A. Can yu buy me a new watch?
    B. Give me that bk,
    C. Lend me yur bike,
    D. Culd yu help me with my English?
    S:I think D is the right answer.
    T:Culd yu tell me why?
    S:Because A is nt lgical. B and C are cmmands. In last perid we learnt that cmmands shuld be made by peple wh have authrity. S I think here D is right.

    Step 2 Talking (Wrkbk P48)
    T:Great. Nw let’s practise the sentence patterns by making up dialgues. S please turn t P48 and lk at the part f talking. Please wrk in grups f fur. And chse ne situatin t rle-play.

    T:Nw let’s begin.

    Grup 1:
    A.(freigner):Excuse me,culd yu give me a hand?
    B:Sure. Yu seem t be lking fr smene.
    A:Yes. My Chinese friends and I prmised t meet at the exit f the subway.
    B:Culd yu speak a bit slwly. I can’t quite fllw yu. I guess yu are lking fr yur Chinese friends.
    A:I’m srry. I wasn’t nticing it just nw. Yeah,we said that we wuld meet here—the exit f the subway at 2 p.m. And it is 2:15,but I still can nt find them.
    B:Exit 1 r Exit 2?
    A:What d yu mean?There’re 2 exits?
    B:Yes. Here are tw exits. S yu shuld be sure which ne is where yu prmised t meet.
    A:I see. I am sure that they must be waiting fr me at the ther exit. Thank yu very much!

    P:Excuse me,culd yu tell me where the tilet is?
    W: restrm?Well,g straight ahead,and it will be at the end f the crridr.
    P:But we d nt need rest. We are just lking fr a tilet.
    Y:I mean we want t g the WC.
    W:WC?We dn’t have ne.
    Y:N WC! Hw can a restaurant have n WC?
    W:I’m srry! But what d yu really mean by saying WC?
    Y:It’s a place where we can wash hands.
    W:Ah,I see. Well,g up t the secnd flr.
    Y:Thank yu s much!

    W:Have yu fund it?
    Y:N,we went up tw flrs,but we didn’t find a tilet but empty rms.

    A:Excuse me,culd yu help me?
    B:Sure?What’s it?
    A:Our English teacher is telling us smething imprtant,but I can quite fllw her. She’s speaking s fast.
    B:Yeah,she’s really speaking fast. Then hw can I help yu?
    A:Culd yu ask the teacher t speak a little bit slwly?
    B:Of curse I can,but why dn’t yu d s?
    A:Er...
    B:I see.

    T:Yes?
    B:I’m srry,but wuld yu speak a little slwly?
    Step 3 Listening (Ⅰ)
    T:Yesterday,we have learnt smething abut dialects in the US. Tday let us listen t the dialgue spken with an accent. Please turn t the listening part n P14.First listen and find ut hw many peple there are in the dialgue and wh they are.

    T:S yu see,there is sme difficulty fr peple t understand the dialects. Right?S what we d while learning English?
    S:We can learn standard English.
    S:I dn’t think s,because we have learnt that there’s n standard English actually. S I think what we shuld d is t prnunce better,and use the crrect wrds and grammar.
    Step 4 Listening (Ⅱ)
    T:By reading the passage “ the rad t mdern English“,we have knwn English is a wrld language which is spken in many cuntries and areas. In this perid we will listen t native speakers frm different English-speaking cuntries. Please mve t P51 and lk at Listening Task. Nw several students in an internatinal high schl in Shanghai are describing where they cme frm. What d yu think yu will hear in their intrductin?
    S:I guess they will talk abut the lcatin,climate,peple,custm,specific things,and s n.
    T:Yu are very clever. We are intrducing sme place,mst f time we will give sme descriptin f the climate,peple,custm,peple,histry,places f interests,and s n.
    T:Listen carefully,then tell which tpics are mentined.

    T:Well dne! Nw wrk in grups f fur and discuss with yur partners why English is spken in s many places arund the wrld. Make a list f the reasns and then reprt yur grup wrk with ther grups.
    Step 5 Summary
    This class we have review the grammar part by using it in daily life. We have practised reading as well. We learn the language in rder t use it. S I advise yu practise using what we learnt daily s that they can be part f yur knwledge.

    This activity is t d sme research n the listening skills. Students are required t surf the internet t search fr sme infrmatin n advice n imprving listening.

    Clrs
    Americans have used clrs t create many expressins they use every day.
    We say we are “in the pink” when we are in gd health. It is easy t understand hw this expressin was brn. When my face has a nice fresh,pink clr,it is a sign my health is gd. If I lk gray and ashen,I may need a dctr.
    Red is a htter clr than pink. And Americans use it t express heat. In English,the small and ht peppers(辣椒) fund in many Mexican fds are called “red hts”,fr their clr and their fiery(火辣辣的).We say that fast,fiery music,especially the kind called “Dixieland Jazz” is “red ht”.
    Blue is a cler clr. The traditinal blue music f American blacks is the ppsite f the red ht music. It is slw,sad and sulful. Duke Ellingtn and his rchestra (管弦乐队) recrded a famus sng,Md Indig(《深蓝的情调》),abut the deep blue clr,indig. In the wrds f the sng,“Yu aren’t been blue till yu’ve had that Md Indig”.T be “blue”,f curse,is t be sad.
    While the clr green is natural fr trees,it is an unnatural clr fr humans. When smene des nt feel well,smene wh is sick fr example,we say he lks green. When smene is angry because he des nt have what smene else has,we say he is “green with envy(忌妒)”.
    Sme peple are “green with envy” because smene else has mre dllars,r “greenbacks”.Dllars are called greenbacks because that’s the clr f the back side f the mney.
    The clr black is ften used in expressins. Peple describe a day in which everything ges wrng as a “black day”.A “black sheep” is the member f a family r grup wh always seems t be in truble. A “blacklist” is illegal(非法的) nw,but at ne time,sme emplyers shared blacklists f peple wh shuld nt be given wrk. Nt all the “black” expressins have bad meanings. A business “ in the black”,fr example,is ne with prfits(利润).A cmpany “in the red” is lsing mney. Red ink is used t shw lsses in a financial reprt. Prfits are written in black. If smene tells yu t put smething “in black and white”,they want yu t write it dwn.
    In sme cases,clrs just describe a situatin. A “black ut”,in Wrld War Tw,was when all lights were turned ff t make it difficult fr bmber planes t find their target(目标) at night. A “brwn ut” is an American expressin fr reduced electrical pwer which makes electric lights dim.
    American wmen use the French wrd fr red as the name f the clred csmetic(化妆品) which they smetimes use t brighten their cheeks. It’s just called “ruge”. They use it especially when they are ging ut fr the evening,r as Americans say “t paint the twn red”.
    The clr yellw is smetimes used t describe a cward(胆小鬼).A persn wh is “ yellw” has n curage. A persn’s skin may becme yellw as a result f diseases that attack the liver(肝).Yellw fever is ne. In the past,ships carrying fever victims raised a flag called the “yellw jack”.
    In the United States,an activist rganizatin f ld peple calls itself the “gray panthers”(灰豹).The name cmes frm the gray hair f its members and frm the panther,a fierce animal f the lin r lepard(豹) family.
    Wrds and Idims
    T eat crw
    乌鸦肉根本没法吃,因此要一个人吃乌鸦,那肯定是非常难受的。这也正是t eat crw这个俗语的含义。t eat crw的确切意思是一个人把自己弄得很丢人,因为他犯了一个很难堪的错误,而又不得不承认:

    可是,爱夸口的人似乎到处都有。下面的一个例子更是可笑:
    Our neighbr had t eat crw yesterday. He’s been telling us what a gd tennis player he is. Well,he tk my 12-year-ld sn ut t play and the kid beat him three straight sets.我们的邻居真是丢尽了脸。他老是在我们面前吹嘘,说他网球打得很好。他昨天带着我那12岁的儿子去打网球,结果我儿子直落3盘把他打败了。
    T put all ne’s eggs in ne basket.
    鸡蛋也是一些美国俗语的组成部分。要是一个人把他所有的钱都当作赌注,想冒险发财,这在中文里是“孤注一掷”,在英文里就是:t put all ne’s eggs in ne basket.把所有的鸡蛋放在一只篮子里,这样是很冒险的。
    If yu want t play the stck market,it’s smarter t divide yur mney and buy three r fur different stcks instead f putting the whle amunt int just ne stck and putting all yur eggs in ne basket.要是你想玩股票,最好把你的钱分开来买三、四种不同的股票,这是比较聪明的做法。千万不要把所有的钱都用来买一种股票,把所有的鸡蛋放在一只篮子里。
    “T put all ne’s eggs in ne basket”不仅可以用在经济方面,还可用于其他方面,例如:
    Ging steady in high schl with nly ne member f ppsite sex is a mistake. G ut with several peple—dn’t put all yur eggs in ne basket.在中学里只交一个异性朋友是错误的。应该多交朋友,而不要把自己局限在一个人身上。
