If you are dreaming of visiting one of those pictureperfect European towns filled with oldworld attractiveness and scenic beauty, here is a look at the most beautiful small towns in Europe.

    Manarola

Manarola, Italy, is filled with rainbow-colored homes along the Mediterranean coast. This attractive fishing town is famous for its unbelievable wine, and the paintings. There are no cars here, no traffic lights, or traffic noise. You can drive to Manarola, but you will have to park just outside the town and then take a shuttle bus or walk in on foot.

    Marsaxlokk

The energetic trading port of Marsaxlokk, Malta, was built in 900 BC.  Today, this picturelike town is the main supplier of fish to the island nation that sits in the Mediterranean Sea. It has no modern buildings to ruin its attractiveness. With such quiet surroundings, including the traditional fishing boats, it is a particularly charming place to visit.

    Portmagee

In a country filled with beautiful towns, Portmagee, is a standout, sitting on the southwest coast of Ireland. This seaside fishing town has a row of brightly colored buildings along with a rich and colorful history. At The Bridge Bar, you will find live music many nights of the week along with nice food and a fine glass of beer.

Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most weeks, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing”and “accomplishment.”I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.

Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department (治安部门). Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.

Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to“climbing a mountain.”In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress.“I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,”he said.

Finally, he made it.“I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,”he said.“I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”

This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,”he said.

    24. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?

    A. He was worried about his future.

    B. He had reached one of his goals.

    C. He was moved by a touching story.

    D. He had experienced something terrible.

    25. What was the response of the sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin’s education?

    A. They recommended a part-time job to him.

    B. They assessed his suitability for the job.

    C. They refused him directly.

    D. They gave him hope.

    26. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED?

    A. By taking time to do things that interest him.

    B. By reporting his test results to his tutor.

    C. By writing himself encouraging words.

    D. By reminding himself of his progress.

    27. What can we learn from Kevin’s story?

    A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. B. The early bird catches the worm.

    C. Practice makes perfect. D. Grasp all, lose all.

    C

People generally consider that friendship is reciprocal(相互的). But when we analyzed self-reported relationship surveys, we found that only about half of friendships are indeed reciprocal. These findings indicate a profound inability of people to know who their friends are.

This may seem like an interesting but minor finding, but this kind of asymmetric(不对称的) friendships has a major effect on the ability of an individual to convince others to cooperate or change their behavior. That's because success depends on the ability to recruit friends to help at important times—in the spread of new behaviors, new ideas, and new methods.

Moreover, in recent years peer-support programs have become highly effective ways to make use of peer influence to support behavioral change of employees. One specific type of peer-support program is the “buddy system”. In this program, individuals are paired with another person (a buddy) with the responsibility of supporting them to change their behavior.

But our findings suggest that this misperception (错误认知) of friendships significantly limits the efforts buddy systems make to promote a behavioral change. What's more, we’ve found that which way friendship is perceived between two people is also a factor. For example, we found that when a one-way friendship tie exists from the buddy (the person applying peer pressure) to the subject (the person receiving the pressure), programs were more effective than when friendship tie was from the subject to the buddy. While it is best to have a reciprocal friendship, having a buddy who thinks of their subject as a friend is the next best relationship.

To overcome this limitation, we can’t rely on how the subject perceives the relationship with the buddy to create effectiveness. If we want to design a program, two simple findings can be applied to achieve behavioral change more effectively. The first is that we shouldn’t start by focusing on people who “know everyone” in the organization.

    28. What does the underlined word “recruit” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. inform B. gather C. persuade D. employ

    29. Which of the following findings of the “buddy system” program is TRUE?

    A. The wrong cognition of friendship restricts a behavioral change.

    B. The way friendship is perceived makes no difference in the program.

    C. Having a buddy who thinks of their subject as a friend is the best relationship.

    D. If the friendship tie was from the subject to the buddy, programs were more effective.

    30. While designing a program, we should ________.

    A. pair individuals with another person

    B. avoid involving those familiar with everyone

    C. rely on how the subject perceives the relationship

    D. consider people with a lot of social ties as influencers

    31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. What Influences Our Friendship?

    B. How Does Buddy System Work?

    C. What Determines Behavioral Change?

    D. How Does Friendship Change Behaviour?

    D

Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity( 成熟) and sense of responsibility (责任). A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.

Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are superficial (表面的) only “ friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”.

True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence.

    32. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?

    A. How to make true friends.

    B. What is friendship based on.

    C. We should make friends in our childhood.

    D. Friends play a very important role in our life.

    33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. It is easy to have many true friends if you are rich.

    B. If you have no music in you, none of your friends will be a music lover.

    C. The friendship developing during your school days will be with you for a long time.

    D. What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood.

    34. What does the underlined phrase “so -called ‘friends’”in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Friends in need.

    B. Fair- weather friends.

    C. Those who can help you.

    D. Those who often gives you money.

    35. What’s the author’s attitude towards “true friends” according to paragraph 3?

    A. True friends are too difficult to find.

    B. You can only share sadness with a true friend.

    C. You can only share happiness with a true friend.

    D. True friends will stand by you whatever happens.

    第二节(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped (包裹) aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
