When her classmates were having a good time, Molly sat at the picnic table alone. She remained embarrassed around her classmates. She seemed unsure of what to do or say, yet I could see her eyes longing for acceptance. Many students had already decided that her friendship would not be worth the energy required to overcome the embarrassment. Others laughed at her. Most ignored her—except for one.
Brianna was making the other students laugh, as usual. “Brianna, do you see Molly down there? Would you mind walking down there and inviting her to come up here with the rest of us? ”I said.
Brianna sighed. I could tell she didn’t want to waste her precious time to do what I was asking of her, but I also knew her heart. She often thought of others before herself—a rare character for anyone, much less a kid.
Knowing this choice was hard for her, I pulled out a D-buck, our class currency(货币). Though this was not the ideal way to deal with this situation. I needed her cooperation(合作). “Here, I’ll pay you for your time. ” I said to her. She offered an insincere smile, grasped the green paper, and headed down the hill.
As the rest of the children screamed and laughed, my eyes locked on Brianna as she neared the picnic table. Molly could be difficult to get along with, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if she sent Brianna back alone, refusing her invitation. When she encouraged herself to a standing position, I sighed with relief.
Minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Here. Mrs D. ” Brianna handed me the D-buck. “Why? ” I asked. “I shouldn’t keep this. ” Her eyes fell to her feet, guilt showing from her quiet voice. “I don’t want Molly to think I only went to get her so I could earn the money. She’s my friend. ”
A moment later, they were all laughing again, and who should I see among them, laughing for the first time that week? Molly.

When I was thirteen, my family moved from Boston to Tucson, Arizona. Before the move, my father gathered us in the living-room on a freezing January night. My sisters and I sat around the fire, not realizing that the universe would suddenly change its course. “In May, we’re moving to Arizona. ”
The words, so small, didn’t seem big enough to hold my new life. But the world changed and I awoke on a tram moving across the country. I watched the scene change from green trees to flat dusty plains to high mountains as I saw strange new plants that suggested mysteries yet to come. Finally, we arrived and settled into our new home.
While my older sisters were sad at the loss of friends, I eagerly explored our new surroundings.
One afternoon, I was out exploring as usual and saw a new kind of cactus(仙人掌). I crouched (蹲) down for a closer look. “You’d better not touch that. ”
I turned around to see an old woman.
“Are you new to this neighborhood? ” I explained that I was, in fact, new to the entire state.
“My name is Ina Thorne. Have you got used to life in the desert? It must be quite a shock after living in Boston. ”
How could I explain how I found the desert? I couldn’t seem to find the right words.
“It’s vastness, ” she offered. “That vastness when you stand on the mountains overlooking the desert, you can sense how little you are in comparison with the world. Meanwhile, you feel that the possibilities are limitless. ”
That was it. That was the feeling I’d had ever since I’d first seen the mountains of my new home. Again, my life would change with just a few simple words.
“Would you like to come to my home tomorrow? Someone should teach you which plant you should and shouldn’t touch. ”

    A. didn’t get used to his new surroundings
    B. explored the new neighborhood after arriving there
    C. knew some knowledge about the desert animals from the old woman
    D. didn’t like the desert because of its vastness and limitless possibilities
    7. What would the writer most probably do when he was invited to the old woman’s home?
    A. Refuse her invitation politely.

    D. Visit her to learn something about plants in the desert.

How to make conversation with a group of strangers
One of the most common fears is speaking to strangers. While most people don’t naturally enjoy talking to strangers, it is an art that you can learn. When you learn how to make conversation with a group of strangers, you never have to stand by yourself at a party again.
1 Say hi and tell the group your name. Don’t focus on how boring you think you sound. Remember that others in the group are probably just as self-conscious as you are. Doing so to a group of strangers may result in making others feel comfortable enough to open up. They may secretly be glad that you made the first move.
Practice talking to as many strangers as possible throughout the day. 2 Soon it will be second nature for you to walk up to a group of strangers and introduce yourself.
Make a comment about something interesting in the environment. This may be something as simple as the decorations for the party or the band providing the entertainment. 3
Ask for an opinion. People enjoy giving their opinion on any subject. 4 Asking for an opinion works immediately to break the ice and encourages the entire group to talk with you.
Learn to listen. Making conversation is about more than trying to find the right words to say. 5 And then find out the next thing you should say. Make sure that your response invites another response.
    A. Introduce yourself.
    B. Try to catch strangers’ attention.
    C. Ask about book ideas, gift ideas or dining ideas.
    D. Each time you do this, you will feel more confident.
    E. Develop the habit of listening to others carefully to understand them.
    F. A comment like this gives the group something in common to discuss.
    G. Ask the group to share what they do for a living or whether they enjoy their work.
