Step 1 Warming-up

1. T asks Ss a question, “What is an earthquake?” Several Ss show their opinions. Then T gives the answer.

2. T and Ss learn some strange things before an earthquake.

Step 2 Pre-reading

1. T shows some pictures about the new words and asks Ss to watch and read the new words.

2. T explains some uses of new words to Ss.

(1) Away表示“远离”。例如：

Stay away from the fire.离火远一点。

Mr. Parker is away this week.帕克先生这周不在。

(2) Keep clear of fires.

Keep clear of sth.表示“清除；摆脱；没有；不接触。”例如：

You should keep clear of alcohol if you’re driving.驾车时不应饮酒。

(3) Do not与don’t

意思上是一样的，都为不要做某事。

do not语气更为重些，起强调作用。例如：

Please don’t try this.请别试着这样做.

Please do not try this.请(千万)别试着这样做。

可以理解隐含意义为：若你真这样做,后果很严重!

【设计意图】通过总结课文难点与语法点，可以更好地使学生理解文本。

2. T asks Ss to answer the questions using the words and expressions in the box.
