Banker Chip Paillex had never planted so much until he moved to the countryside in Pittstown,New Jersey, seven years ago. Surrounded by working farms,he quickly became interested in the grow-it-yourself idea and rented a piece of 30-by-30-foot land. He planted tomatoes, eggplants and other vegetables—enough to feed his family of four for summer. He ended up with so much produce; he couldn’t give it away. He found a local food factory, and donated (捐赠) 120 pounds of fresh vegetables.
The following year, with a handful of volunteers and a memorable name—America’s Grow-a-Row, Paillex harvested 1,500 pounds of fresh vegetables, all of which he donated to food banks that give food to poor people. Soon Paillex had a hundred volunteers and needed more land. He visited Meredith and Jeremy Compton, who farm Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown. Could he work on their land?
“I guess we were feeling honoured,” says Meredith. Not only do the Comptons welcome Grow-a-Row volunteers, but they also work on the land.
What began with a few empty fields has turned into a large local farm. This year, Grow-a-Row will deliver about 250,000 pounds of fresh produce to food banks. Their secret for getting all of this done? Family power. “Each week, a couple of families ‘own’ the garden,” says Paillex. “They water, pick, and deliver, and then hand it off on the Sunday night to the next group of families.”
Paillex also welcomes local schoolkids. On a Friday morning in May, some kids worked on a field. “We’re growing food,” one fifth grader said proudly.
“The programme shows kids that there are people in need,” says Paillex. “When these kids become tomorrow’s leaders, they’ll be much more likely to encourage their co-workers or employees to get involved in (参与) something like this.”
“Chip makes people want to help,” says Colleen Duerr, a mother of two. “And families love this. Chip has given us a way to raise our kids with a giving heart.”
( )4.Why did Chip start growing vegetables in Pittstown?

In mid-January, Cape Town officials announced that the world-class South African city of four million residents would run out of water on April 12. The date, nicknamed “Day Zero,” has since been postponed multiple times, thanks to the intense conservation efforts by locals, a sharp reduction in agricultural water usage, and a 10 billion-litre donation from the private reservoirs(水库) of the Groenland Farmers Association.
The city now has enough water to sustain the current level of usage until July 9, giving residents hope that the rainy season, which begins in June, will be more regular than has been the case lately.
Four years ago, Cape Town’s water disaster would have seemed impossible given that the city’s six dams, which can hold 230 billion litres of water, were filled to the brim. However, three years of low rainfall—a third of normal levels—and the ever-increasing population, have reduced the dams to puddles.
In an attempt to avoid Day Zero, the government has imposed a strict 50-litre daily limit for all households. Residents are being urged to reduce their water usage by making small changes like taking shorter showers and reusing bathing water to flush toilets. Those that use more have to pay heavy fines.
When Day Zero strikes, a million homes or about 75 per cent of the city will lose access to running water. Residents will instead have to wait in line at the over 200 water distribution centres established around the city to obtain 25 litres a day.
Though conservation measures will help in the short run, only nature can solve the problem. If the city gets enough rainfall during its winter season from June to August, it will provide much-needed relief. However, the local officials are not sure whether it will happen.
( )8.What does the underlined word “brim” in the third paragraph probably mean?

C.Reducing the city population as much as possible.
D.Restricting water usage in agriculture significantly.
( )10.What does the last paragraph mainly want to convey?
    A.Tomorrow is still unknown.
    B.Current efforts will pay off.
C.Man is at the mercy of nature.
D.It’s time to make joint efforts.
( )11.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To inform us of the severe situation of water shortage in Cape Town.
B.To appeal to the world to come together to help people in Cape Town.
C.To explain the cause of the severe water shortage in Cape Town.
D.To applaud the efforts by people in Cape Town to address water shortage.

A scientist locked himself in a small air-tight plastic tent with 200 plants to see if they could change CO2 into oxygen (氧气) fast enough to keep him alive.
Kurtis Baute locked himself in a 3m by 3m tent in his brother’s backyard in British Columbia, Canada. He hoped to find out if by surrounding himself with plants, the CO2 he breathed out could be changed into oxygen to allow him to survive in the locked tent for at least three days. Unfortunately, he had to give up the experiment after only 15 hours, as CO2 levels reached a dangerous point where he risked of suffering brain damage.
“I could probably survive in the tent for three days,” Baute wrote on his website. “But my goal is not to just ‘not die’. My goal is to end this project without developing brain damage or just generally causing lasting harm to my body.” But as it turns out, that’s exactly what he risked as the 200 plants he took with him into the tent couldn’t meet his needs. Clearly, a cloudy sky prevented them from receiving all the sunlight they needed to perform photosynthesis (光合作用), so they couldn’t recycle CO2 fast enough.
“Plants are great at taking in CO2 and they love it. Since it wasn’t a bright and sunny day, they weren’t getting the light they needed, which meant CO2 just kept rising. I had to give up the experiment as that continued,” the young experimenter said.
Fifteen hours into the experiment, Baute reached the set danger point and then ended this experiment. Still, he called the experiment a “huge success” as his main goal was actually the terrible effects of climate change and CO2 emissions. “The conclusion about my experiment is that if CO2 is too high, I’ll escape, which is just everyday experiences for many people on this planet. Everyone deserves clean air, but not everyone has it,” he wrote.
( )12.Why did Kurtis Baute stay in the tent for only 15 hours?
A.The tent was too small for him to stay too long.
B.The environment in the tent was dangerous for him.
C.CO2 in the tent couldn’t be changed into oxygen.
D.He couldn’t survive in the locked tent any longer.
( )13.What made it hard for the 200 plants to satisfy Kurtis Baute’s needs?
A.His health condition. B.His wrong decision.
    C.Too much CO2. D.The cloudy weather.
( )14.What does Kurtis think of the result of the experiment?
    A.Disappointing. B.Surprising.
    C.Satisfying. D.Interesting.
( )15.What is the text mainly about?
    A.Surviving in the tent.
    B.The set danger point.
C.Making people know the use of plants.
D.A test to show the importance of clean air.

It was a Saturday afternoon. The colour of the sky was changing, first light grey, then dark grey, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my five-year-old brother, Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. “So many toys,” the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy colour, “that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit the mall!” Christopher and I couldn’t have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to.
“Christine! Take care of your young brother!”Mother shouted at the top of her voice. “Christine! I’m going to find the Lego section(乐高积木区)! There’s a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!” Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比) World. I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple maths in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered(闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.
    Paragraph 1:
    “Oh no,”I thought.“Where’s Christopher?”

    Paragraph 2:
    “Christine,I’m here.”

    A
根据文中“Groups of 15 people or more are required to pre-book their visit, and each group will have its own guide for free…via e-mail.(15人或以上的团体需要提前发邮件预订他们的行程,每个团体将有自己的免费导游)”可知,如果一个20个孩子的小组参观该展览和旅游,他们需要提前发邮件预订,故选D。
由第一段中的“Surrounded by working farms,he quickly became interested in the grow-it-yourself idea…”
由第二段中的“…with a handful of volunteers…Paillex had a hundred volunteers…”
由第四段中的“Each week, a couple of families ‘own’ the garden…They water, pick, and deliver, and then hand it off on the Sunday night to the next group of families.”
根据本句“Four years ago, Cape Town’s water disaster would have seemed impossible given that the city’s six dams, which can hold 230 billion litres of water, were filled to the brim.”
根据文章第四段“In an attempt to avoid Day Zero, the government has imposed a strict 50-litre daily limit for all households.”
根据最后一段第一句“Though conservation measures will help in the short run, only nature can solve the problem.”
根据文章第一句“In mid-January, Cape Town officials announced that the world-class South African city of four million residents would run out of water on April 12.”
由第二段的“Unfortunately, he had to give up the experiment after only 15 hours, as CO2 levels reached a dangerous point where he risked of suffering brain damage.”

    37. independent become
    38. for 固定短语for a long time意为“很长一段时间”。
    39. her 句中her作gave的宾语。
    40. which 分析句子可知,该从句中is believed前缺少主语,且该空指代上文的24 hours and 15 minutes。
    42. was set 分析句子可知,该空为谓语,时间状语为in 2014,而且主语record与动词set之间为被动关系,故填was set。

    One possible version:
“Oh no,” I thought. “Where’s Christopher?” Scared, I was frozen to the spot, overcome with the need to see my brother, to hug and make certain he was all right. My stomach twisted and turned inside. I ran up and down the aisles through the darkness, panic filling my small chest and making it difficult to breathe. I knocked into displays of candy and tripped over toys, all the while frantically calling my brother’s name. Anxious as I was, I could barely see his figure. Tears of frustration and fear trickled down my face, but I continued to run.
“Christine, I’m here.” Excitement took my breath away—there in the dark Lego aisle I found Christopher. He was standing alone, perfectly still, clutching tightly to the pirate ship set. I began to cry out from relief, throwing my arms around him and hugged him tightly. He hugged me back, saying, “I knew if I waited here, Christine, you would be able to find me.” Then, I took his hand in mine and we went to find our mother, who must be desperately searching the store for us.
