I jumped, reached the lowest part of the maple tree, and lifted myself up. Then I got close to the tree house.
“Angie, open up.” I 1 on the door. “No!” Angie said.
I moved carefully and climbed in through the window opening Dad had cut in the wall. Angie sat in one corner, head against knees.
“Mom says you’ve been here long enough. You have to come down.” I said.
Angie shook her head. “I’m living in this tree forever and 2 going to school again.”
“Oh? What happened?” I asked. Angie’s eyes filled with tears, and she 3 her face with her hands. “I told Dick at school we were getting a new baby 4 . He asked, ‘What color? Green?’ He said the baby won’t really be my brother, the 5 way you aren’t. He said our family isn’t a real family. All 6 colors—black and yellow and white.”
“Well, we are a real family. You and I and the baby are adopted (收养). So what?”
I sat down opposite her. I kept going, 7 the facts. “Who taught you to read, to skate, and to e-mail Grandma?”“You.” said Angie. “ 8 did I do all that?” I asked, and then I answered 9 own question. “Because I’m your brother.”
“And who would climb this tree, 10 she’s the worst tree climber in the whole world, to make sure you were OK?” “Probably Mom.” Angie replied.
“Finally, who built this tree house because you wanted one so badly, even after he’d hurt his hand badly with the hammer?” She let out a smile and said, “It’s a good thing Daddy doesn’t build tree houses for a 11 .” I knew what she meant. Nothing about the tree house was straight or even (平滑的). 12 , it was a great tree house. Like our family, it was one of a kind and built 13 love.
“Hey, guys, are you coming 14 ?” Mom called. “Dad will be home for dinner any minute.”
Dinner was a family event, where everyone shared the day’s news. I reached out my hand and 15 her to her feet. “The first time we see the new baby, we’ll know he’s part of our family.” “Even if he’s green?” Angie asked. “Even if,” I answered.

    二、阅读单选
Do animals have emotions(情感)? My wife and I disagree about this question. We disagree about other things too, but those are not things I want to talk about in this article. The question I want to talk about is “Do animals have emotions?” Have I already said that? Oh yes, it’s in the title. Never mind. I don’t think animals have emotions, but my wife thinks they do have emotions. In fact, I think my wife thinks that animals do have emotions, but I don’t. Oh dear, this is very confusing.
In our house we have the following pets: three lizards, a cat, three chickens and a rabbit. Actually, the chickens and the rabbit live in the garden, not in the house. The lizards don’t laugh, the cat doesn’t cry, the chickens don’t smile and the rabbit doesn’t shout, so how can they have emotions? I have told sad stories to the lizards, but they never cry. I have told jokes to the cat, but it never laughs. I have given beer to the chickens, but they don’t smile. I have told the rabbit to his face that he is stupid, but he doesn’t get angry. On the other hand, the cat gets angry when I pull its tail, the chickens look scared when I run after them, the lizards fight each other if I don’t give them enough food and the rabbit kicks me when I try to pick him up. So perhaps they do have emotions. But these aren’t real emotions; they are just animal instinct(本能).
In England, people even think that different animals have different characters. They say, for example, that lions are brave, dogs are loyal and cats are independent. But it’s easy to be brave when you are the biggest animal in the forest, and would dogs be so loyal if they could use a tin(罐头) opener? Perhaps cats are just too stupid to work together. If I am feeling sad, the cat, the lizards, the rabbit and the chickens never do anything to help me. They never give me a word of advice. They don’t even make me a cup of tea, which is what people often do if someone is feeling sad. If you want me to believe that animals have emotions, send me a photo of a chicken crying.
    16.What’s the writer’s opinion?
    A.Animals have emotions.
    B.Animals don’t have emotions.
    C.Animals can’t cry.
17.How many animals do they have in their house?
    A.Four. B.Seven. C.Eight.
18.Does the writer think that different animals have different characters?
    A.Yes, he does. B.No, he doesn’t. C.He isn’t sure.
19.In the writer’s opinion, if you are sad, what would your pet do?
    A.It would do nothing.
B.It would make you a cup of tea.
C.It would give you a hug.
One day, an 11-year-old girl asked her dad, “What are you going to get me for my 15th birthday?” The father replied, “Don’t worry about that. We still have plenty of time.”
But on a day after her 14th birthday, she passed out (昏倒) and was rushed to the hospital. The family learned that the girl had a serious heart disease and that she might die. At night, she asked her dad, “Daddy, have they told you that I am going to die?” The father replied, “No, you will live as long as anyone else.” She wondered and asked, “How can you be sure?” He smiled to her and said, “I just know it.”
After the girl turned 15, she had a heart transplant (心脏移植手术). After she came back from the hospital, she found a letter on her bed. It said, “My dearest daughter, one day you asked me what I would give you for your 15th birthday. I wasn’t sure then. But now you know that my present to you is my heart.” The father had given his heart to his daughter.

    Dear Joseph,
Today you are ten years old. Everyone says it, but where has the time gone?
Life was quite hard after you were born, but I loved you with all of my heart. What I want to tell you now is how proud I am of the young man you have become.
You have overcome so many challenges and my heart is filled with pride each time—whether that be the continuing development of your speech and language, the way you progressed with your swimming, or your achievements in dance.
I recently asked a number of people who love you to think of a word they connect with you and I was surprised with their answers. Confident, kind, funny, lovely—to name but a few. I want you to remember these in years to come and if you ever have doubts about who you are.
You see, there is another word, autistic(患自闭症的), that people often use to describe you. If there is a time in the future when your understanding of the world around you has grown, I will explain to you what that actually means.
The way your brain works means that you see the world very differently from other people. You can’t often say what you feel when you become upset. The things in disorder always trouble you.
You like having people around you, but friendship doesn’t come easily. I know you have many people who enjoy your company, but you haven’t quite yet worked out how to share those feelings.
At some point in the future, you will move to another school away from the people you have grown up with, but one where they can hopefully prepare you more for your adult life.
At last, I want to say, the most fitting word to describe you, out of all that were provided, was this “perfect”—you are and always will be.
    Love,
    Mummy.
33.The mother is quite satisfied with Joseph’s ________.

A.To show her love and encouragement to him.

D.To tell the result of comparing his behaviors with others.
“Where’s Papa going with the ax(斧头)?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
“Out to the pig house,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some pigs were born last night.”
“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” said Fern, who was only eight.
“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is too small and weak, and it will never make it. So your father has decided to do away with it.”
“Do away with it?” shouted Fern. “Just because it’s smaller than the others?”
“Don’t shout, Fern!” Mrs. Arable said. “Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.”
Fern ran outdoors. The grass was wet and Fern’s sneakers were soaking(湿透的) by the time she caught up with her father.
“Please don’t kill it!” she cried. “It’s unfair.”
    Mr. Arable stopped walking
“Fern,” he said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.” “Control myself?” shouted Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.” Tears ran down her cheeks and she held the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.
“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising pigs than you do. A weakling(体弱者) makes trouble. Now run along!”
“But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”
Mr. Arable smiled. “Certainly not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is different. A little girl is one thing; a little weak pig is another.”
“I see no difference,” said Fern, still holding the ax. “This is the most terrible case of unfairness I ever heard of.”

One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Smith called a family meeting. “We’ve made a difficult decision.” Mr. Smith said. “You see, your mother is offered a job as manager of a television station in Chicago. Unluckily, the station isn’t here. After thinking long and hard about it, we’ve decided to move to Chicago.”
Marc looked surprised, while his sister May started asking when they would be moving. “It’s surprising, but exciting!” she said. Marc simply said, “We can’t go―I can’t leave all my friends. I’d rather stay here and live with Tommy Lyones!”
Mr. and Mrs. Smith hoped that by the time they moved in August, Marc would be more used to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack(打包) his things.
When the morning of the move arrived, Marc was missing. His parents called Tommy Lyones’s house, but Mrs. Lyones said she hadn’t seen Marc. Mrs. Smith became increasingly worried.
What they didn’t know was that Marc had started walking over to Tommy’s house, with an idea of hiding in the Lyones’ attic(阁楼) for a few days. But as Marc walked past all the familiar sights of the neighborhood: the green wall he and his mother painted, the tree he and his sister used to climb and the park where he and his father often walked together, he changed the idea. How much would these mean without his family? Who makes them special? Marc didn’t take the time to answer those questions but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any boxes the right size to hold his CD collection.

Living away from your country can be a really unforgettable experience. But at the same time, it has very important effects on your life. 45
The major effect, and also a very common one, is that once you start a regular life away from home, you miss everything.
46 Little things like sitting on a Sunday morning watching TV alone instead of having a nice chat with your mom make you realize how valuable your family really is.
47 Since you are living in a place with different customs and traditions from yours, you have to be able to develop yourself in conditions which you are not familiar with. This means making new friends, accepting different opinions, and catching every opportunity you have to go to new places.
The most significant (显著的) effect of living away from home is the independence that grows inside you. 48 There is no one else to go to school, clean your room, and wash your clothes. Being independent will help you get over many difficulties.
49 You have to remember that all changes are difficult, but it is necessary to go through them to build your character and it helps you appreciate (感激) everything you have.
A.Missing your family and the attention they all paid to you is a very usual thing to do.
B.Living far from home, even for a short period of time, can be really hard at the beginning.
C.Living on your own far from your family gives you a lot of experience of organizing your life.
D.The purpose of this passage is to discuss the three main effects (影响) that living in another country can cause.

    A Daughter’s Letter

    Dear Mum,
Today is my birthday. I’m writing this letter to you because I want you to know how much I love you.
A few days ago, we learned an English poem named Mom Knows Best. I felt strong mother’s love between the lines. 50 In class, Miss Li recalled that what her mum had done for her and how her mum had encouraged her. But she mentioned that she felt really regretful because she had no chance to say “I love you” to her mum, for her mother had passed away. This made me think a lot. 51 So I can’t wait to write the letter.
I still remember the times when you held my hand and counted steps with me as we walked along. You told me stories about the brave elephant and encouraged me to be a girl with a positive attitude(积极的态度). 52 In cool autumns, we took many walks along the street, chatting and laughing together. My childhood was filled with these warm memories. Now, I see what an influence you’ve had on my life.
Time flies and so much has happened. There have been good and bad times, successes and failures, but you were always by my side. When I won the swimming prize, you smiled and said you were proud of me. 53 Your words helped me to deal with all my difficulties. Now whenever I have problems, I always think of your words and they really help me so much.
Mum, because of you, I’m brave and strong. 54 Because of you, I’m living a wonderful life. I can’t help saying, “Mum, I love you!”
    Love,
    Lanlan
A.It seems that I’ve never told you “I love you”.
B.It reminded me of you, Mum!
C.Because of you, I’m full of power and energy.
D.When I failed my math exam, you encouraged me and said that everything would be fine.
E.I also remember that in our small flat, you read books at your desk while I played with my toys on the bed nearby.

Minutes later, he was once again walking towards the woods. This activity went for an hour. Finally, I 58 help following him and saw the most amazing sight.
Several larger deer 59 in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed to him to get away. But the deer neither hurt him nor even moved as Billy got down. A long time ago, there were two kings who hated each other. Their names were Shah Ali and Shah Elvin. The villagers of their kingdoms were sure that there would be a war soon because the Shahs spent so much time threatening one another.
It went on like this for many years. Ali would feel slighted (藐视) by Elvin, or Elvin would feel mocked (蔑视) by Ali. The villagers were stuck in the middle of the argument. They were always afraid that war would come and destroy their homes. Finally, one day, Ali announced, “That’s it! I declare (宣布) war on Elvin!”
Elvin had not been to war in a very long time. He hadn’t worn his battle clothes in years. He even forgot where he had stored them. The day before the battle began, he asked his mother, Sabine, to find his helmet.
    Sabine returned without the helmet.
“What happened to my helmet?” Elvin asked.
“I couldn’t move it,” Sabine said gently. “A mother dove has made a nest in your helmet. She has three little babies. They are safe and sound in it. I see her coming and going from the nest all day long, bringing food to her babies. She tries so hard to take good care of them. Please, don’t disturb them. Doves are the most peace-loving birds. They never harm anything. How could I destroy this happy little bird’s home?”
Elvin understood. He smiled and nodded his head.
“I don’t need my helmet to do battle, Elvin said.
On the battlefield, Ali noticed that Elvin was not wearing his helmet.
“Where is your helmet?” Ali asked. A king at war without a helmet? This was unheard of!
“My mother found a dove nesting in it,” Elvin admitted. “We didn’t want to disturb the family.”
Ali laughed and sent his wise men to visit Sabine and see the helmet for themselves.
When the wise men returned, they all verified (核实) that there was indeed a dove nesting in Elvin’s helmet. This shocked Ali. The most peaceful bird of all nesting in a war helmet. How amazing! Ali smiled.
“This is a sign,” Ali said. “The most peaceful bird decided to nest in a war helmet. This means that we must be like the dove and make peace.”
    “Really?” asked Elvin.

Their neighbors called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because of the big fire. The little boy appeared at the second-floor window, crying for help, but the words spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be a few minutes late because they were at the other fire.
