A great woman once said, “Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others.” These are the words of the US pilot Amelia Earhart(1897—1937), a pioneer in aviation(航空领域), who was the first woman to fly solo(独自地) across the Atlantic Ocean.
Her story ended in mystery when she disappeared without a trace(踪迹) during a flight over the Pacific Ocean. Theories about what happened to Earhart were proposed, but nothing was ever confirmed—until now. A study published in March conducted by Richard Jantz from the University of Tennessee, US, determined that bones found in 1940 on a remote Pacific island belonged to Earhart. Following the discovery, the world’s memories of the legendary female pilot were brought back to life.
Earhart was born in 1897. When she was young, she was very interested in stories about women who were successful in male-dominated(男性为主的) professions, such as engineering and law. But in 1920, Earhart’s life changed after her first experience of being a plane passenger. As soon as the plane left the ground, Earhart knew that she loved flying, so she found herself a teacher and started to learn how to fly for herself. To pay for the lessons and buy a plane of her own, she took all sorts of jobs.
In 1932, Earhart flew solo across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first woman ever to do so. She also designed a flying suit for women and went on to design other clothes for women who led active lives. When she was nearly 40, Earhart was ready for a final challenge—to be the first woman to fly around the world. Her first attempt was unsuccessful but she tried again in 1937 with her navigator(领航员) Fred Noonan. But one month later, they disappeared in bad weather in mid-flight.
Even though it’s still not clear how she ended up on the island, we’re one step closer to finding the answer. And no matter what, Earhart will be forever remembered as a brave pioneer, both as a pilot and as a woman.
( )4.When did Earhart fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone?
    A.In 1920. B.In 1932. C.In 1937. D.In 1940.
    ( )5.What started Earhart’s interest in flying?

The idea that you can use humour, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humour, laughter and play has an important part in keeping you healthy.
Use “the best medicine” to treat the blues with a sense of humour, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it is for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive(认知的) falling.
Anyway, adding humour, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humour, laughter and play to make our life more active, interesting and happier.
( )8.What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Playing an important role.
    B.Keeping people in high spirits.
    C.Quickly influencing other people.
    D.Preventing illness from spreading.
( )9.What can laughter increase according to the author?
    A.Cognitive ability. B.Good relationships.
C.A sense of humour. D.Happiness and trust.
( )10.What does the author think the old should do?
A.They should have a good rest.
    B.They should play like children.
    C.They should prevent cognitive falling.
D.They should take part in physical play.
( )11.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Humour, laughter and play for health
    B.Always keep our bodies healthy
C.Have an active and happy life
D.Let our bodies and minds relax
    D
Dogs are our best friends. That’s especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall down, search and rescue dogs help find trapped people. Dogs’ amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It’s taking smell detection(探测) to a whole new level.
The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low levels of many compounds(化合物) from people’s skin. This isn’t the first time engineers have developed such an object. Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds either. The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment.
The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time. “Being able to do this, in such a small object, is the significant discovery,”says Sotiris E.Pratsinis, Professor of Process Engineering & Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped. Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronic equipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels.
The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. “Ideally, this technology could replace search and rescue dogs,” Pratsinis says.
Stephen Taylor, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs. Still, he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. He suspects, “I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs.” Taylor also pointed out some potential limitations of the new invention. “E-noses are useful, but can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption,” he says.
( )12.Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning?
    A.To catch the readers’ attention.
B.To introduce the topic about e-noses.
C.To show what search and rescue dogs do.
D.To add background information for discussion.

( )13.Which of the following best explains “bulky” underlined in Paragraph 2?
    A.Complex. B.Simple.
    C.Handy. D.Large.
    ( )14.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A.What e-noses’ working principle is.
    B.How e-noses are made.
C.What differences between dogs and e-noses are.
    D.How powerful e-noses are.
( )15.What does Stephen Taylor mean?
A.Dogs and e-noses could work together.
B.Search and rescue dogs will retire soon.
C.E-noses are more reliable than noses of dogs.
D.Dogs are better at finding out trapped people.

In high school, Dad got me to play football in the first place. I enjoyed throwing the ball around with my friends, but I didn’t think I had what it took to play on a team. “I’m no football player,” I told my dad. “You’ll never know what you’re capable of unless you give it a try, Adam,” he told me. So, I did. It would give me a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence.I remember how proud he was when I won some awards and the hug he gave me after I received my congratulation letter. There was rarely a game where Dad wasn’t on the sidelines, cheering me on.
Four years of hard preseason football campus came down to my last game. I urged my dad to bring our video camera.
I waved at my parents before the opening kick-off, and put on my game face. My pads broke as I made contact with the offensive players. I grabbed at the clothes of their running back and dragged him to the field. A loud cheer came from the sidelines. There was Dad with the camera, cheering like crazy. By the end of the game, I had stopped seven players and a sacking (擒杀)—my best performance ever, a perfect end to my career. I ran into my dad’s arms. I was sweaty and smelly, but he hugged me anyway. I couldn’t wait to watch the tape—experience every moment again.
As soon as we got in the house, I took the tape out of the camera and put it in the player. My dad, mum, sister and I sat down in the living room in front of the big screen TV. I pressed Play. The video started. The two teams, lined up before the game, then the running back taking the handoff, running up to the line, me reaching out, and then…the sky and clouds! I could hear my dad screaming “Way to go, Adam!” as images of the sky shook up and down on screen.
    Paragraph 1:
I leaned forward to see the next big play.

    Paragraph 2:
The tape ended and Dad was quiet.

35.B 由第一段中的“When my sister Diane began playing the violin, she was seven. How did she sound? Terrible.”
    39. who/that 考查定语从句。
make sb do sth意为“使/让/叫某人做某事”,故本空应用不带to的不定式think作宾补。
decide to do sth意为“决定做某事”,故本空应用不定式to concentrate作宾语。
arrange sth for…“为……而安排……”,故本空应用介词for。
    44. doing 考查动名词。句意参考上题。与上文的watching和reading并列,故本空应填动名词doing。
    45. easily 考查副词。句意:在开始“大笑疗法”计划的8天内,他的疼痛开始减轻,并能够更容易地入睡。本空修饰动词sleep,故用副词easily。
    第三部分
    第一节
    One possible version:
    Dear Chris,
I am writing to invite you to pay a visit to a local folk culture village with us next Saturday. As scheduled, we’ll meet at the school gate at 8:00 am and go there by bus half an hour later.
After arriving at the village, we will first have a taste of some delicious local dishes. Best of all, we can learn to make some local snacks like spring rolls! Over lunch, we will watch the glove puppetry, a famous folk performance. Then we can enjoy the sight of the typical buildings with strong southern Fujian characteristics. I believe it will be a great chance for you to explore the traditional folk culture.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you are available. We are all looking forward to your coming.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
    One possible version:
I leaned forward to see the next big play. Strangely the sky and clouds kept rooted on the screen, but the noise on the field and cheering shouts from my dad continuously occupied my ears. Almost instantly I realized that Dad must have dropped the video camera to the ground as he was crazily waving, but he was too thrilled to notice anything. The voice on the screen ranged from “Good job, Adam!” to “Come on, get up!” and finally “Ya-hoo!” as he gave me a big hug. Watching the sky and clouds as the backdrop, I just silently listened.
The tape ended and Dad was quiet. As Dad was uncomfortably shifting, I sensed the guilt in his heart. “I’m sorry,” he said, “I failed to record you the whole game.” “No,” I firmly answered, “it was your cheers that fueled my courage in that fierce football game. For me, it’s the most precious part of the video.” Hearing my words, he smiled harder than ever before. During the incomplete tape, I found the unforgettable cheers of the football game and my entire life.
