I was wandering around the Albuquerque International Sunport airport. My flight had been delayed and I heard an announcement: “If anyone near Gate A-4 understands Arabic(阿拉伯语), please come to the gate immediately.” Gate A-4 was my own gate. I went there.
An older woman was crumpled(蜷缩成一团的) on the floor, crying loudly. In her traditional Palestinian dress, she reminded me of my grandmother.
“Talk to her,” urged the flight agent. “We told her the flight was going to be late, and she did this.”
I bent over to put my arm around the woman and spoke uncertainly, “Shu-dow-a, Shu-bid-uck Habibti? Stani schway, Min fadlick, Shu-bit-se-wee?” She stopped crying. She thought the flight had been called off. She needed to be in El Paso for a medical treatment the next day. I said, “You’ll get there, just late. Who is picking you up? Let’s call him.”
We called her son. In English, I told him that I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane. She talked with him. Then we called her other sons just for fun. Then we called my dad and they spoke for a while in Arabic and found out that they had several shared friends. After that, I called some Palestinian poets I knew and let them chat with her.
She was, laughing a lot but then, patting my knee and answering questions. She pulled a bag of home-made cookies filled with dates and nuts and topped with sugar from her bag and offered them to the people at the gate. To my amazement, no one declined. It was like a sacrament(圣餐). The traveller from Argentina, the mum from California, the lovely woman from Laredo—we were all smiling, covered with the same sugar.
I looked around the gate and thought, “This is the world I want to live in, one with no anxiety. This can still happen anywhere.” Not everything is lost.

There are various ways to read body language so that you can understand how someone is feeling. Reading emotional clues(线索) is one of them.
Crying is considered to be caused by an explosion of emotion in most cultures. Oftentimes crying is considered a sign of sadness, but crying can also be an expression of happiness. Crying can also come about through laughter and humour. Thus, when judging crying, you’ll need to look for other signs to determine the meaning of the crying. Crying can also be forced in order to gain sympathy or to cheat others. This practice is known as “crocodile tears”, an expression that draws on the wrong idea that crocodiles “cry” when catching prey(猎物).
Signs of threat include v-shaped eyebrows, wide eyes, and an open or down-turned mouth. In a similar way, an arm tightly crossed over the other is a common sign that the person is angry and is closing himself off to you.
When people show anxiety, they display increased facial movements, and their mouth stretches into a thin line. Individuals who are anxious may also play with their hands, unable to keep them in one spot. Anxiety can also be conveyed when people seemingly unconsciously(无意识地) tap their feet or have nervous legs.
Embarrassment can be expressed by turning the eyes or shifting them away. If someone looks down at the floor a lot, they are probably shy, afraid, or embarrassed. People also tend to look down when they are upset, or trying to hide something emotional. People are often thinking and feeling unpleasant emotions when they are in the process of staring at the ground.
There are also some signs of pride. People show pride by displaying a small smile, holding their head backwards, and putting their hands on their hips.
( )8.In what situation may one have “crocodile tears”?
A.When he is sad. B.When he cheats others.
C.When he supports others. D.When he is angry.
( )9.What might a man do when angry?
    A.Shape his eyebrows into a “w”.
    B.Sigh heavily.
    C.Cross his arms tightly.
    D.Open his eyes wide.
( )10.What do we know about the emotional clues in the text?
A.Most of them show negative feelings.
    B.They usually express positive emotions.
C.They can be controlled well by humans.
D.They are good for people’s health.
( )11.What is the best title for the passage?
    A.How to use body language?
    B.How to read emotional clues?
C.What expressive emotions do we have?
    D.What is body language?
    D
The unusual whistle language used as a means of communication by villagers in the remote and mountainous northern Turkey has been added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The language is a highly developed high-pitched system of whistling to communicate in rugged (崎岖的) areas where people mostly cannot see each other. It can allow people to communicate across great distances, up to 5 kilometres. Compared with other similar whistle languages in Spain’s Canary Islands, in Mexico, or in Greek villages, it has a higher tone and larger vocabulary.
This unusual form of communication, which dates back to some 500 years ago, during the Ottoman Empire, was born from sheer necessity and spread wide across the Black Sea regions.
But 50 years ago, it suffered the impact of the progression of technology and nowadays the rapid growth of cellular mobile systems has put this cultural heritage under serious threat.
For centuries, the language has been passed on from grandparent to parent, from parent to child. Now, though, many of its most skillful speakers who use their tongues, teeth and fingers, are aging or becoming physically weak. Young people are no longer interested in learning the language or in finding ways to update its vocabulary with new words, and in a few generations it may be gone for good.
“Our bird language is very convenient and efficient to communicate across the valleys. It has many benefits over yelling, which is bad for our throats,” said Avni Kocek, head of the bird village, adding that despite setbacks because of technology, “Bird language is still used by many of us. Whistle language is transmitted from our elders to us and we have the duty to transmit it to our children. We are making efforts to keep our culture alive through the annual Bird Language Festival.”
Besides, the bird language has been required to be taught at primary schools since 2014 by district authorities in order to instill (逐步培养) the practice in younger generations.

( )12.What is the bird language’s advantage over other similar whistle languages?
A.It is used as a means of communication.
B.It is older and has a larger number of users.
C.It can send more messages to farther places.
D.It is a completely different system of whistling.
( )13.What’s the biggest threat to the bird language?
A.Other whistle languages are more effectively protected.
B.The need to use it in everyday life is disappearing.
C.Many of its most skillful speakers are growing old.
D.Young people find it too difficult to learn well enough.
( )14.What’s the most effective measure so far taken to protect the bird language?
A.It has become a subject at primary schools.
B.Bird Language Festival is celebrated every month.
C.Cellular mobile systems are not allowed in the area.
D.All parents are required to transmit it to their children.
( )15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A.Preserving the endangered bird language
B.The story of a bird language speaker
    C.Celebrating the bird language festival
    D.The disappearance of bird language

It was December. The cold snow was falling as Kelly struggled home from school. How she hated the snow—and everything else about Pinetree, Wyoming, America. How she missed Thailand.“I hate it here! I want to go home!”Kelly thought.
She reached for a small white envelope in her pocket. In it was an invitation to Jennifer’s party. Kelly didn’t want to go. She felt awkward at the thought of being at a party with a bunch of kids she barely knew. She closed her eyes and remembered this time of year people would hold a festival to thank the Mother of Water in Thailand. They used banana leaves to make a little boat with a candle lit in it, made a wish for the coming year and set the boat floating on the river.
Kelly sighed and opened the door to her parents’ restaurant. They were busy working. “Maybe I should go just this once for Mama and Papa. They are so worried that I’m not making any friends.”Kelly went over and tied an apron around her waist. As she was washing dishes, she told her mother that she had been invited to a party on Friday night. Mama smiled, saying now she might be happy in their new home. Kelly nodded, thinking Pinetree could never be her home.
On Friday evening, Papa drove Kelly to the party. Jennifer met her at the door and led her into the dining room. Six kids from her classes were seated around the table, on which were sitting small brown cookie houses. They were selecting colourful candies and gluing them to their own houses. Wow, she loved making things. For this part of the party, she could be herself. She decided to decorate her cottage like one of the golden temples of Thailand. As she was making it, Jennifer wondered how she did it. The others joined staring at Kelly with admiration. Kelly felt a warm glow. Maybe I could fit in here—a little, she thought.
    Paragraph 1:
As the party went on, the talk turned to the coming festival.

    Paragraph 2:
    Suddenly, Kelly got an idea.

故选A。

    第三部分
    第一节
    One possible version:
    Boys and girls,
Good afternoon. Today I’d like to talk about what I have done on the research on body language.
Though you don’t speak the native language, people throughout the globe can understand general body language; therefore, knowing of some universal gestures and actions helps to make us understood, which will make your stay there much more pleasant and comfortable. However, different countries have different body language. For example, men in France kiss and hug each other when they meet while men in China shake hands instead of kissing, only causing each other to feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. On many occasions similar gestures convey different messages. So, studying international customs to avoid misunderstanding will be of great importance. Besides, we should respect foreign cultures and do as Romans do. In a word, body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, especially smile.
    That’s all,thank you!
    第二节
    One possible version:
As the party went on, the talk turned to the coming festival. It was such a heated discussion that Kelly got involved unconsciously. She announced that most Thai people didn’t celebrate Christmas. Instead, they would make boats with lighted candles to thank the Mother of Water. All the friends were gazing at her with great curiosity. Kelly felt so good as there was so much for fitting in. As Jennifer begged to know more information about the celebration, Kelly smiled, weighing what to say.
Suddenly, Kelly got an idea. She suggested making some colourful boats to float on the lake as there was a full moon that night. Meanwhile, they could make their wishes for the coming year. This could be their peculiar way of celebrating. What a super idea! They all got down to business instantly. Later, when they stood watching the boats on the water, Kelly didn’t even notice the cold. Her heart was glowing with warmth. For the first time, Pinetree felt like home.
