A seven-ft-tall fighter stares acrss a grassy valley in the Andes Muntains f Suth America. He flashes fierce jaguar-like teeth and watches the scene with his stny stare. The figure is made f, well, stne.
Sme 600 f these statues (雕像) have ccupied (占领) the area near San Agustin, Clmbia, fr mre than a thusand years. But nbdy's sure why they were built — r what the statues can tell us abut wh built them. Scientists are trying t unravel the mystery (谜).
Sme had a guess: the creatrs must have had magical pwers. Hw else t explain the statues when the metal tls needed t carve (雕刻) stne didn't exist yet?
In the 20th century, sme scientists began digging the area. Their digging uncvered tmbs (坟墓). The size f the tmbs and the presence f their stne “guardians” led scientists t think that the richest leaders f this ancient cmmunity — and their treasures — were buried here.
“Yu'd imagine these tmbs wuld have persnal treasure, but they didn't,” archaelgist Victr Gnzalez says. “We were surprised there wasn't any treasure inside.”
The scientists realized the tmbs weren't fr the wealthy members f the San Agustin culture — they were fr the pwerful nes. “We think the structures suggest that thse buried here were believed t have unusual pwers, such as the ability t influence the frces f nature.” Gnzalez says.
T find mre infrmatin abut the civilizatin, the scientists had t get high-tech. They fund that the culture prbably started 2,000 years ag and lasted fr abut nine centuries! But the mystery f hw these peple carved such stne statues still hadn't been uncvered.
After examining hundreds f statues, scientists realized mst f the figures were made f tuff, a vlcanic rck fund in large quantities near the area. Tuff is hard but easily brken. Striking it with a harder rck can easily chip ff parts. N magic needed!
While the mystery f hw the statues were made has likely been cleared up, scientists aren't dne asking questins abut the peple wh carved them. Fr example, ver hw many years were the statues created? Did the whle cmmunity jin in? And mst imprtantly, what happened t the culture?
