    I nce saw a TV prgramme at cllege abut a scientist wh used “drift bttles (漂流瓶)” t mark cean currents. It was a rather bring prgramme. I was mre interested t read an article abut smene wh fund a bttle n a beach with a message inside. Like the drift bttles, it had been thrwn int the sea — but 21 years befre. I decided t find ut mre abut such bttles, and I started wrk n this intriguing (非常有趣的) research.
    An early message in a bttle was thrwn int the sea by Christpher Clumbus during a terrible strm. He wrte abut his discvery f America and expected that his message wuld be sent t the Queen f Spain. He wanted the news t reach her, but he thught he might be drwned (淹死) in the strm. In fact, he survived but the bttle was never fund.
    I wuld be excited t find a message in a bttle, but in the 16th century, it culd be dangerus. In thse days, the British Navy (海军) used messages in bttles t send infrmatin abut the enemy. When Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ fund ut that a batman had pened a bttle cntaining ne f these secret messages, she created a new jb, Uncrker f Ocean Bttles.     Althugh Wlfe is nt as well-knwn t readers as he nce was, he has been the receiver f great praise, including three Wrld Fantasy Awards, tw Nebulas, and eight Hug Award nminatins (提名). Sci-fi authr Harlan Ellisn has called him, “n less than ne f the finest, mst riginal writers in the wrld tday”, and the Encyclpedia f Science Fictin names him “quite pssibly the mst imprtant” writer in the field f science fictin.
    Brn in 1931, New Yrk, Gene Wlfe mved frequently as a child, but spent mst f his grwing-up years in Texas. Wlfe began writing fictin in 1956, selling his first stry,The Dead Man, t Sir magazine in 1965.     Petrie identifies three main passwrd “types”. “Family riented” respndents numbered nearly half f thse surveyed.
