    It’s early mrning, and Katie Smith hears a rster (公鸡) crwing (报晓). It’s time t get up and start wrking. She and her husband, Chris Cashen, start the day early. They wn and run the Farm at Miller’s Crssing, in Hudsn, New Yrk.
    With the help f 10 wrkers and, smetimes, the Cashen kids — Lael, 12, Cnnelly, 10, AnneMae, 8, and Christpher Jhn, 6 — Smith and Cashen harvest crps (收割农作物) during much f the year. They grw vegetables and ther plants. They als raise and care fr sme animals.
    Because the Farm at Miller’s Crssing grws different kinds f crps, Cashen says the biggest challenge (挑战) is timing. Several times a year, wrkers prepare the sil and plant crps. At ther times, they transfer (转移) plants frm the greenhuse int the fields. The farmers stre the fall vegetables in clers and sell them thrughut the winter.
    Cashen and Smith grw their crps withut the use f chemicals. When crps are ready t be harvested, wrkers pick them daily, wash them, and put them in bxes. In June, they wrk up t 70 hurs a week.     Earlier research has cnnected lnger cmmutes with besity (肥胖). But this new research is believed t be “the first study t shw that lng cmmutes can reduce exercise time,” explained lead researcher Christine M. Hehner f Washingtn University in St. Luis.
