The coast is the most popular place for the English people to spend their holidays.Food in British restaurants is reasonably cheap, but rooms are not.Few English people rent houses for their holidays, but one of the traditional ways of spending a summer holiday is in a boarding house. Some boardinghouse keepers provide all meals for their guests, but others provide breakfast only.

The British people may refuse to change the times at which they take their holidays, but they have shown themselves to be very ready to try new places. When they get home again, they always talk about how they spent their holidays.

    第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分)

    第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

Hello and welcome to English with Lucy.Today we have another topic:“Four common British expressions.” Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well.

    Four Common British Expressions

    “A piece of cake.”

And this is very similar to “easypeasy, lemon squeezy,” which we've discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy.So I might come out of an easy exam saving, “That exam was a piece of cake.”

    Break a leg!”

It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!”. So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!”

“It cost an arm and a leg.”

And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money.

    “To call it a day.”

    And this means “to end a task”.So, for example, “I'm feeling a bit tired.I think I'll call it a day.”That means “I think I'll stop here.Let's finish.”

Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions.” I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something.

A.Break a leg!   B.It cost an arm and a leg.

C.To call it a day.   D.A piece of cake.

解析:选A 细节理解题。根据小标题Break a leg!下段落中的And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!” So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!”可知,当John要参加英语演讲比赛时,你应该对他说“Break a leg!(祝你好运)”。故选A。

You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French. The reason goes back to the year 1066, when Norman forces invaded (入侵) what is now Britain. The Normans were from northern France and spoke French.During the Norman occupation, French became the language of England's rulers and wealthy class. This lasted for more than 300 years.Other people in England continued to speak English during this period.

Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about 10,000 French words eventually entered the English language. However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same.Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.

Take the French word “college” for example. In English, “college” can often be used in place of the word university, or sometimes as a school within a university. However, in French, “college” actually means “middle school”, or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.

There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings. In English, the word “chat” is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in French, the word “chat” is the word for an animal:a cat.

If an English speaker says someone is jolly, that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French, “jolie” means someone is goodlooking or pleasant to look at.In any case, both are nice things to say to someone.

    语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了英语中存在大量法语词汇的现象,解释了其原因并举例说明了它们在英语和法语中的不同含义。

24.What does the author stress about the French words in English?

    A.Their spelling forms.

    B.Their changes in history.

    C.Their puzzles for English.

    D.Their different meanings.

解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第二段中的However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same.Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.可知,作者强调了英语中的法语单词的不同含义,故选D。

25.What does a Frenchman mean if he says he likes a chat?

A.He likes a kind of pet.

B.He wants to have a talk.

    C.He hates to speak English.

D.He prefers to chat in French.

解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第四段中的In English, the word “chat” is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in French, the word “chat” is the word for an animal:a cat.可知,如果一个法国人说他喜欢a chat,他的意思是“他喜欢一种宠物”,因为在法语里chat是cat的意思,故选A。

26.What is the French word “jolie” used to do?

    A.Replace “jolly” in English.

    B.Describe people's looks.

    C.Refer to people's happiness.

    D.Prove the change in French.

解析:选B 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的But in French, “jolie” means someone is goodlooking or pleasant to look at.可知,在法语中jolie的意思是说某人长得好看或看上去是令人愉快的。由此可知jolie 在法语中是用来“描述人的外表”,故选B。

27.What is the text mainly about?

    A.Comparison between two languages.

    B.Difficulty in grasping English.

    C.French words in English.

    D.Development of English.

解析:选C 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段中的You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French.和第二段中的Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about 10,000 French words eventually entered the English language.可知,本文主要讲述的是“英语中的法语单词”,故选C。

    C

In the last several hundred years, English has borrowed words and expressions from other languages. It may surprise you that English has taken lots of words from Japanese. Here are two examples.

In English, “tycoon” refers to a very rich businessman.“Tycoon” comes from the Japanese “taikun”, meaning “great lord or prince”.

In the mid1800s, the United States was ready to use military (军事的) power to force Japan to reopen business with the West. When American officer Matthew Perry arrived in Japan, he refused to meet with anyone other than the highest leader in the country.

The Japanese introduced their “shogun” (a general) to Perry. But they were concerned that the English translation would not seem powerful enough to Perry. So they introduced their “shogun” using the title “taikun”.

The word “tycoon” soon became popular in America. It came to mean “top leader”.Even Abraham Lincoln began to like the word. When he was president, people called him tycoon as well.

The next example is “hunkydory”.This word means “fine” or “free of trouble or problems”.

The word “hunkydory” is actually a combination (结合) of words from two languages. The first part of the word, “hunky”,means “in a safe place”.

In the mid1800s, “hunk” was a word that children in New York City used in street games. In this game, one or more players run after other players, trying to touch them with their hands. If the players reach the safe place before being caught, they are considered “safe”.

The story of the second part of the word “dory” comes from the Japanese word “honchodori”.This was believed to be a street in Japan where American soldiers went to have fun while they were working there.

    语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。几百年以前,英语向其他语言“借词”来扩充词汇量,丰富其含义。文章介绍了几个来源于日语的英语单词。

28.Why did Matthew Perry visit Japan?

A.To see the top leader in Japan.

B.To learn more about the Japanese culture.

    C.To conquer Japan.

D.To make it do business with the West again.

解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的use military (军事的) power to force Japan to reopen business with the West可知,Matthew Perry出访日本的目的是打开日本的大门,迫使其同西方国家进行交易。

29.What did tycoon mean at first in America?

    A.Great prince.   B.Top leader.

    C.Powerful businessman.   D.Rich person.

解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第五段中的The word “tycoon” soon became popular in America. It came to mean “top leader”.可知,tycoon在美国流行后,最初是“最高领导人”的意思。

30.What do we know about hunkydory?

A.It could be explained as being in a dangerous place.

B.It came from a street game in New York.

C.It had the same meaning as honchodori.

D.It joined two words of different languages together.

解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第七段中的The word “hunkydory” is actually a combination (结合) of words from two languages.可知,hunkydory实际上是两种语言的合成词。

31.Which of the following is the main idea of the text?

A.There are English words borrowed from Japanese.

B.English has more words than Japanese.

C.Language changes are happening more and more quickly.

D.Japanese will change into English in the end.

    解析:选A 主旨大意题。根据全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了从日语中发展而来的英语词汇。

I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don't remember Mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded.

I always wanted to know what my mom was reading.Hearing Mom say,“I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night,  just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.

This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a sixyearold girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When Mom said,“The CANDY is hidden on the top shelf,” I  knew where the candy was.My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.

Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests.Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.

Now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex (复杂的), I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious (神秘的) world where I am now a new  character. In these worlds I can  become anyone.I don't have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.

We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is an important part of my life.Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

    语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章叙述了阅读在作者人生各个阶段所起的作用,以及作者在不同阶段对阅读的不同体验。

32.Why did  the author want to grab the newspaper out of Mom's hands?

A.She wanted Mom to read the news to her.

B.She couldn't wait to tear the newspaper apart.

C.She couldn't help but stop Mom from reading.

D.She was eager to know what had happened.

C.her growing desire to know the world around her

D.her effort to remind Mom to obey traffic rules

解析:选C 推理判断题。从第三段内容,尤其是My progress in reading raised my curiosity,  and I wanted to know everything.可知选C。

    D.learn about the adult world

解析:选C 推理判断题。从倒数第二段内容,尤其是By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious (神秘的) world where I am now a new character.可知选C。

35.What could be the best title for the passage?

    B.Growing Up with Reading

    D.Reading Makes a Full Man

      37

As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about anything else. While listening, you can also recall the related knowledge in common with the material concerned, such as the vocabulary about the subject or topic, which is beneficial to your better understanding.

    Grasp the main idea

Sometimes the monologue, dialogue or conversation you're listening to is a little bit longer than you expect. And it's normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don't need to understand it completely.  38  .

    Ignore the new words

Without doubt, there usually exist unfamiliar words in listening materials. In fact, it's almost impossible for you to know or understand all the words in the listening material sometimes.  39  .It's mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening.

Develop the habit of taking notes

In the course of listening, it's a good habit to write down the content and leave out the unimportant details.  40  .By taking notes, we can remind ourselves of the key points.

    A.Focus on listening

B.The more words you memorize, the better it is

C.Feeling nervous or worried is harmful and unnecessary

37.选A 由下一句As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about anything else.可知,后文一直建议读者在听力开始时,要注意听。故选A。

38.选F 由小标题Grasp the main idea和上两句And it's normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don't need to understand it completely.可知,在听听力时,听力材料中会有一些不必要的信息,你是没必要去完全理解的,本段中心是“把握主旨”,所以无视这些不必要信息时,你的重心还是要把握主旨,得到听力材料的要点和中心大意。故选F。

39.选D 由小标题Ignore the new words和上一句It's mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening.可知,本段中心是建议读者忽略听力材料中的生词,因为弄清楚生词的含义很浪费时间,所以本空应该填与“忽略生词”有关的内容。故选D。

40.选E 由小标题Develop the habit of taking notes和上一句In the course of listening, it's a good habit to write down the content and leave out the unimportant details.可知,本段建议读者在做听力时要善于做笔记,并给出了方法,删掉不重要的细节,记有关重要细节的笔记。故选E。

    第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分)

    第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)

    阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship.Having been a Straight A student, I believed I could   41   tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne.I was extremely interested in the ideas he   42   in class.

When I took the first exam of my best subject English, I was   43   to find a 77, C plus, on my test paper.I went to Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained   44  .I decided to try harder, and I read the books more carefully, but got another 77 again.I   45   with Professor Jayne.Again, he listened patiently but wouldn't change his   46  .

One more test before the final exam. One more chance to improve my grade. So I redoubled my effort and, for the first time   47   the meaning of the word “thorough”.But my effort did no good and everything   48   as before.

The last hurdle (障碍) was the final. No matter what   49   I got, it wouldn't cancel three C pluses.I might as well kiss the   50   goodbye.

I stopped working hard.I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even   51   myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I'd have   52   with a test.A Week later, I was surprised to find I got an A.I hurried into Professor Jayne's office. He   53   to be expecting me, “ If I gave you the A's you   54  , you wouldn't continue to work hard.”

I stared at him   55   that his analysis and strategy(策略) were correct.

I was speechless when my course grade arrived:A plus. The next year I received my scholarship.I always remembered Professor Jayne's lesson:you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

    语篇解读:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过叙述自己在Jayne教授所教科目下,努力争取A级并获得奖学金的故事,告诉我们:不管做什么事,自身的努力都不可或缺,任何人都有泄气的时候,但只有通过不断努力,给自己设定目标,才能不断进步。

    41.A.take         B.discuss

    C.cover   D.get

    解析:选A 由下文的subjects可推断,此处表示选修一些课程。学习一门课程通常用take。故选A。

    42.A.sought   B.presented

    C.exchanged   D.obtained

    解析:选B 根据空格前后的the ideas和in class可推断,此处指的是老师在课堂上所提出的观点思想,是“我”非常喜欢的,用present ideas。故选B。

    43.A.shocked   B.worried

    C.scared   D.anxious

    解析:选A 第一段讲“我”对自己信心满满,可第二段来个大转折,第一次考试后,意外地发现竟然只得了77分,所以非常吃惊。故选A。

    44.A.unchanged   B.unpleasant

    C.unfriendly   D.unmoved

    解析:选D 根据空格前的but remained可知,老师没有改变给“我”的分数。故选D。

    45.A.quarreled   B.reasoned

    C.bargained   D.chatted

    解析:选B “我”再次得了77分,于是再次去找老师理论,reason with sb.“与某人讲道理,说服某人”。故选B。

    46.A.attitude   B.mind

    C.plan   D.view

    解析:选B 此处意为“老师听完之后,再次无动于衷,他没有改变他的决定”。attitude迷惑性最大,注意这里探讨的还是分数能不能更改的事,而change one's mind是英语中一个比较常见的搭配,意为“改变一个人的想法或决定”,相对于态度,改分数的事更多是关于改变决定的。故选B。

    47.A.memorized   B.considered

    C.accepted   D.learned

    解析:选D 于是“我”加倍努力,第一次懂得了“彻底”这个词的含义。故选D。

    48.A.stayed   B.went

    C.worked   D.changed

解析:选B 根据上文的my effort did no good可知,“我”努力后的结果不好,跟以前一样,没有改变。everything goes as before“一切都像从前一样”。故选B。

    49.A.grade   B.answer

    C.lesson   D.comment

    解析A 根据下文的three C pluses可知此处指的是分数。 故选A

    50.A.scholarship   B.course

    C.degree   D.subject

解析:选A 根据文章第一段to earn a scholarship和最后一段I received my scholarship可知,这里是“我”以为自己拿不到奖学金了。故选A。

    51.A.helped   B.favored

    C.treated   D.relaxed

    解析:选C treat sb.to ...是固定搭配,意为“请某人吃饭/娱乐等”。 I even treated myself to a movie表示考前很放松,自己掏钱去看电影。故选C。

    52.A.fun   B.luck

    C.problems   D.tricks

    解析:选A 根据前文“考前请自己看电影”可知,这里指“乐趣”。故选A。

    53.A.happened   B.proved

    C.pretended   D.seemed

    解析:选D 根据语境可知,一周后,作者惊喜地发现自己居然得了A,跑去找老师,发现老师好像早料到“我”会来,所以在等。故选D。

    54.A.valued   B.imagined

    C.expected   D.welcomed

    解析:选C 根据下文you wouldn't continue to work hard并结合上文内容可知,老师说,如果他以前就给了“我”所期望的成绩A,“我”就不会这么努力付出了。故选C。

    55.A.remembering   B.guessing

    C.supposing   D.realizing

    解析:选D 下文his analysis and strategy(策略)were correct是“我”领会或意识到的东西。此处表示“我”看着他,这时才真正明白他的用心。故选D。

    第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

    阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

    Different Countries Have Different

    Kinds of Englishes

Voyages of people from England play an important part in   56   (spread) the English language.  57   present,English is frequently spoken as an official or common language in many countries, such as America,Singapore,Malaysia and some African countries, all of   58    are based on British English. The Englishes spoken in these countries can   59   (understand) well by native English speakers. But actually, these Englishes have been changing gradually in accents, spellings, expressions and the usage of vocabulary.

Because of this fact, you can make use of the differences  60   (tell) which country the foreigners of your block are from. For example,if a boss   61   (fluent) commands his driver,“Come up straight to my apartment   62   elevator and take some gas for my trucks and cabs”,instead of requesting,“Please come to my flat by lift and take some petrol for my   63   (lorry) and taxis”,you can recognize   64   (he) American identity while the latter   65   (suggest) that he is British.

    语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。目前,英语在许多国家经常被作为官方或通用语言使用,但实际上,不同国家的英语在口音、拼写、表达和词汇的使用上都有所不同,你可以利用这些差异来辨别你所在街区的外国人是哪个国家的。

56.spreading 固定短语play an important part in ...意为“在……中起重要作用”,根据空前的介词in可知,此处应用动名词形式作介词的宾语,故填spreading。

    57.At 固定短语at present意为“目前”,首字母需大写,故填At。

    58.which 此处America,Singapore,Malaysia and some African countries是先行词,指物,在后面的非限制性定语从句中作介词of的宾语,介词后面用which(指物)引导定语从句,故填which。

    59.be understood 该句主语为the Englishes,与谓语动词understand之间为被动关系,应用被动语态,因其前为情态动词can,故填be understood。

60.to tell 分析句子成分可知,  60   (tell) which country the foreigners of your block are from为目的状语,应用动词不定式形式,故填to tell。

    61.fluently 空处在句中作状语,修饰动词commands,应用副词形式,故填fluently。

    62.by 根据语境可知,该处表示“乘电梯”,用by elevator,表示“方式”,故填by。

    63.lorries 根据空后and taxis可知,此处用名词的复数形式,故填lorries。

    64.his 修饰名词短语 American identity应用形容词性物主代词,意为“他的”美国身份,故填his。

    65.suggests 空处作谓语,主语the latter为单数,故填suggests。

    Best wishes!

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    第二节(满分25 分)

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

    How to Improve Pronunciation

Accurate pronunciation is an important part of learning any language. The way your speech sounds can have a big impact on whether or not people understand what you are saying and their initial impression of you. There are no shortcuts to perfect pronunciation; however there are some ways you can practice more effectively and improve your skills faster.

It's often difficult to hear pronunciation errors in your own speech because you are concentrating actually communicating rather than the sound you are making. If you can't hear your pronunciation problems, it's tough to correct them.Try recording your speech with your smart phone or PC and making a note of specific areas you need to improve on.

Moreover, many English learners think that speaking fluently means they need to speak fast. This is wrong.Speaking too fast reinforces bad habits and makes the speaker sound nervous and indecisive.Speaking slowly will give you time to breathe properly and think about what you want to say next.

Pronunciation is a physical skill. You're teaching your mouth a new way to move and using different muscles.Focus on difficult sounds each day.Having trouble with “th”? Put your tongue between your teeth (don't bite down) and blow air out of your mouth.Feel the air move over the top of your tongue.Another method worth a try is learning popular English songs.Singing helps you relax and just get those words out, as well as helping your rhythm and intonation.Because you don't need to concentrate on constructing sentences for yourself, you can concentrate on making your pronunciation sound great!

    参考范文:

Good pronunciation matters, for it affects people's understanding and initial impression.(要点1) For improvement, you should concentrate on the sound by recording your speech and noting down the areas requiring improvement.(要点2) Moreover, speak slowly and carefully and consider what you want to say next.(要点3) Lastly, use different muscles by focusing on difficult sounds every day or practicing singing popular songs.(要点4)
