    Passage 1

    Ancient China produced many types of beautiful works of art. Among them, calligraphy(书法), poetry and painting were the most famous. Often they would be put together in art. These became important starting with the Song Dynasty.

    Calligraphy is the art of handwriting. In the old time, the Chinese considered writing as an important form of art. Calligraphers would practice for years to learn to write perfectly, but with style. Each of over 40,000 characters needed to be written correctly. And each stroke(笔画) in a character had to be written in a certain order.

    Poetry was also an important form of art. Great poets were famous all over the country. And all educated people were expected to write poetry. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry was so important that writing poetry was part of the examinations to become a civil servant(文官) and work for the government.

    Chinese painting was often connected with calligraphy. It is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The most traditional way of Chinese painting is known as “national” or “native” painting, which is quite different from Western painting. People can draw mountains, homes, birds, trees and water on it.

    Driving a car at a high speed(速度) along a high-way seems to be fun. You need only to follow the bright traffic signs(交通标志) beside the highways and they will take you to where you wish.

    Selfless Love

    Jane's mother worked on the farm from morning to evening which just could make ends meet. To allow Jane to live a happy life, Jane's mother was very careful about spending money. However, Jane didn't understand her. Every day Jane's mother was busy with her work while Jane was studying at school, so they had little time to enjoy themselves.

    One day, Jane's mother realized Jane was unhappy and even unfriendly to her, so she decided to go skiing with Jane to make Jane happy.

    On Sunday morning they went happily to the snowfield. Since they were both in white clothes, the manager advised them to buy ski clothes. He said they might be easily found in their ski clothes, in case there was an accident. Jane's mother couldn't afford them, so she refused.

    Then they went skiing in their white clothes. They were skiing happily on the snowfield when suddenly the snowfield began to shake. It was the snowslide. They ran a long way and finally ran out of the snowslide, but they couldn't find their way. Later, a helicopter(直升机) which came from the nearest airport was flying above, but people on it couldn't see or hear them. Jane was in danger because she had hurt her head seriously and blood dropped on the snow. Just then an idea came to her mother's mind. She pierced(刺破) her wrist immediately and then bright red blood dropped down on the snowfield. She wrote a red SOS on the snow. At last Jane was saved, but her mother died.
