I sat on the seat 7 thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I wouldn't want anyone to 8 that.

    Passage 1

A mother held her new baby and very slowly rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while she held him, she sang:

I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be.

The little boy grew. He grew until he was nine years old. And he never wanted to come in for dinner, he never wanted to take a bath, and when grandma visited, he always said bad words. Sometimes his mother wanted to sell him to the zoo!

The boy grew. He grew until he was a teenager. He had strange friends and he wore strange clothes and he listened to strange music. Sometimes the mother felt like she was in a zoo!

That teenager grew. He grew until he was a grown-up man. He left home and got a house across town.

Well, that mother, she got older. She got older and older and older. One day she called up her son and said, “You'd better come to see me because I'm very old and sick.”

So her son came to see her. When he came in the door she tried to sing the song:

I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always,

But she couldn't finish because she was too old and sick.

The son went to his mother. He held her in his arms and very slowly rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And he sang this song:

    Passage 2

Why are so many people afraid to fail? Quite simply because we forget that failure is part of the human life. Every person is able to fight failure and finally succeed.

Most parents try hard to stop their children from knowing that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. When a child finishes making a table, its mother describes it as “Fantastic”, though the table isn't good at all. Another way is to blame others. If John fails science, the mother will say his teacher is unfair or foolish.

There's a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. Young children need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. A child often feels terrible, of course, when he is not invited to a birthday party, or is not chosen into a football team. But parents should not say “It doesn't matter” quickly. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment(失望)—and be helped to come out of it.

Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both children and their parents. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” Don't blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don't be shy about asking them. Success just repeats what has been done. It is not as good a teacher as failure. You can learn how to give a good party from an unsuccessful one.

15.How do most parents stop their children from failure? ( )

    A.They give them some presents.

B.They avoid telling them that they have failed.

    C.They don't blame other people.

    A.old people shouldn't experience disappointment

B.failure can be really bad to our life

C.when facing failure, we should reflect on(反思) ourselves

D.everyone can be best at everything and win all the time

    18.The best title for this article may be “ ”. ( )

    Ⅲ.回答问题

A stag(雄鹿), which lived in a forest, decided to go to another forest with his family. The stag and his family enjoyed the new forest, which had thick bushes and trees. There was plenty to eat for all of them.

All of a sudden, the antlers(鹿角) of the stag got caught in the overhanging branches(树枝) of a tree. The stag tried hard, but could not free himself. His wife and baby kept on watching helplessly.

The stag fought for some more time but he was very tired. He thought, “We won't be able to reach our home until I have my antlers free. We came here for having a good time. I must be strong and wait.” He finally gave up and kept standing there helplessly. His wife and baby spent the whole night with him.

The next morning, a woodcutter who came along saw the stag. He took pity on the stag. Soon, the woodcutter cut down the branches of the tree and set him free.

The stag thanked the woodcutter and rushed back home with his family. On reaching home, he was very surprised to learn that a pack of lions had attacked(攻击) their area yesterday. Many lives were lost.
