Go right up to the building and look left. There is a very narrow set of stairs leading to the beach. Go down the steps and open the gate at the bottom. Follow the narrow road along the wall to the sand. The best bit? It’s dog-friendly.

    MacKenzies Beach, Tamarama

From whale watching hot place MacKenzies Point, follow the sloped (斜的) road to MacKenzies Beach, a dog-friendly, short-time beach that only appears every couple of years when the right combination (结合) of wind and sand on the normal rocky reef. When I was young, I had no idea what I wanted to do. The choices were thin. It was assumed (假定的) that I’d go to college, and after, that I could be a mom. I could, be a secretary. I could be a nurse or a teacher. If anyone asked, I said I wanted to be a writer. Even I knew that wasn’t a real job. Mostly, I didn’t think about it.

But just as I was coming of age, a world of possibility opened up. By the time I graduated from college with a science degree, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do. And one day, after seeing a notice in the paper, I remembered there was something I’d wanted to do, once. It sounded fun, so I took the test to be a mail carrier. The new Postal Service was by law an inclusive group. If you got a good enough score, you were in.

It was an older woman conducting (执行) my fitness entry exam who was the first to disagree. This wasn’t a job for a girl, she said. And I shouldn’t take a man’s job away from him. He has a family to support. Despite that poor assumed man’s family, I became one of perhaps a dozen female carriers in the whole city of Portland, Oregon.

On the street, I was a novelty (新奇的人). I didn’t go a single day without hearing some friendly words: Well, I guess we can’t call you the mailman, can we? We’ll have to call you the mail-woman! Those particular words somehow appeared naturally in thousands of minds at once. My existence received attention. It’s hard to imagine now.

Thirty-two years later I retired into a very different world. Being a retired mail carrier is even more fun than being a mail carrier. And finally, I get to be a writer. It’s still not really a job.

    4. What can we know about the author when she was young?

    A. She had no plan for her future.

    B. She studied hard to be a writer.

    C. She never wanted to go to college.

    D. She knew little about what a real job was.

    5. Why did the author want to be a mail carrier?

    A. She could do nothing else after her graduation.

    B. She thought it interesting to be a mail carrier.

    C. She got a high score in the test to be a mail carrier.

    D. She was bored with studying for a science degree.

    6. What was the older woman’s attitude to the author’s decision?

    A. Supportive. B. Careless. C. Unclear. D. Negative.

    7. What was the author’s purpose in writing this text?

    A. To stress the importance of a career plan.

    B. To share the story of her career options.

    C. To show the fun of being a mail carrier.

    D. To express her regret about her job choice.

    C

Finding yourself in an unfamiliar country is difficult enough and not being able to read or speak the native language can make the change greatly more difficult. Programs that teach English as a Second Language (ESL) help non-English speaking students acclimate to life in the United States more smoothly.

The ESL Newcomers program at Palmer Elementary in Newport News, Virginia, serves children coming from areas of South America, Afghanistan, Vietnam and other parts of Asia. When members of the Kiwanis Club of Peninsula at Oyster Point-which has a long-standing relationship with the school-learned about the program in 2020, they were eager to help.

To date, the club has donated (捐赠) $1,600 to Palmer Elementary’s ESL Newcomers program. The money has helped the school gain classroom resources (资源), plan virtual (虚拟的) field trips and bring guest speakers into the classroom. Money has also been used to help with the buying of winter clothing, which some children didn’t have when they arrived in the United States.

“In the ESL Newcomers program, the children are taught English, math, history and even some cultural information about their new home,” explains Joseph Slabinski, club president. “The program will also help their families, as students can enter into the programs while they are at home.”

The club also helps the children with gardening. This gives students another chance to learn and practice English, make friends and feel more connected to their new home.

Over the years, the Kiwanians also have taken part in reading programs, bought dictionaries for young students and helped LeapFrog learning stations. The ESL Newcomers program is another chance for members to connect with students and improve education in a meaningful way.

“We have the ability to help these students with their learning and show them that America has people that are concerned and willing to help others in need,” says Slabinski, “We will always be there to help the children of Palmer Elementary.”

    10. What is the ESL Newcomers program mainly about?

    D

During the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), some people found their exercise was greatly reduced. However, it was an attraction for others to increase their physical activity. With the change of working from home, some physical activity was reduced. People took this newly freed up time as a chance to add exercise to their day, with online fitness programs and health apps (应用软件) reporting an increase.

However, the early drive to exercise appears to have been short-lived for many, with a study comparing activity levels between the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Victoria finding most people reported a reduction in their physical activity levels the second time around because of a shortage of encouragement. A study found that COVID-19 has reduced physical activity and increased sedentary (久坐不动的) behavior, and the effects could be lasting.

Continuing concerns about COVID-19 have led to carefulness about returning to public spaces such as gyms. But also, with many people changing their exercise habits and setting up home gyms during the pandemic, it’s become much more convenient to exercise at home. It’s clear for many of us that COVID-19 changed how and how much we exercise. But the changes don’t necessarily have to be for the worse.

People who changed to online workouts (锻炼), fitness apps and home gyms during the pandemic said their exercise was less satisfying, less enjoyable and they felt less active com-pared with doing exercise in gyms. Besides the physical effects, people reported missing the social communication, friendship, and being avoidable of the gym. In-person classes also offer the advantages of management and instruction, which can help make sure workouts are completed safely and effectively.

However, online workouts, fitness apps and near-home workouts are likely here to stay, and offer many advantages, such as no need to travel to the gym and convenience, making it easy to fit in a workout while working and shouldering family responsibilities.

    12. How do some people add exercise to their day during the pandemic?

    A. By returning to public places. B. By driving to a lonely park.

    C. By turning to the Internet. D. By taking face-to-face classes.

    13. What can we learn about exercise during the pandemic from the text?

    A. People have changed exercise habits. B. People like to build their home gym.

    C. People strongly wish to exercise. D. People refuse to go back to public gyms.

    14. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on?

    A. The disadvantages of exercising at home.

    B. The way to exercise during the pandemic.

    C. The examples of good exercise at home.

    D. The reasons for people changing home exercise.

    15. What does the author think of exercising at home in the last paragraph?

    A. It is difficult. B. It is worrying.

    C. It is challenging. D. It is helpful.

Sal Garfield was having a bad day. He had been busy making cakes since 3 am. And now, his employee (雇员) who should take over the shop for the afternoon had just called in sick (请假).

Sal was an artist in making cakes. No one could make cakes like him, but he wasn’t a person who is good at talking to others. He dealt with several hateful (令人讨厌的) customers that morning, so when Janie, a nine-year-old girl, walked in, he was already very angry. Janie placed her little hands against the glass as she looked at the delicious cakes. “Hey, kid!” Sal shouted. “Don’t put your hands on the glass! I just cleaned it!” Janie jumped back and said sorry. “Everything looks so delicious! My mom says you make the best red velvet (丝绒) cake in the world,” Janie smiled. Sal felt happy about the praise.

“I want to buy a birthday cake,” Janie said and reached out her hand. There were many coins that didn’t come to more than a few dollars. She said she wanted to buy a red velvet cake. But Sal replied, “I hope you have more than those three or four dollars, kid! That cake costs $70!” Janie was shocked, and hoped she could buy just a slice (薄片) since she didn’t have any more money.

“Kid,” Sal answered, “you can’t even afford a slice!” Janie almost cried. She pointed at other cakes, asking whether she could buy one of the cheapest. Sal shook his head.

Janie was so sad. She wanted to buy a birthday cake for her mom, who had got seriously ill. Sal’s red velvet cake was her mom’s favorite. Janie wanted to buy one to surprise and cheer her mom up. Knowing she couldn’t even afford one of any other birthday cakes, Janie started crying, “Please, Sir. You don’t understand…” Sal lost his patience, shouting, “Get out! Try somewhere else!” Janie ran out and sat on a chair outside of the door, crying sadly. Just then, an old lady walked past.
