As I walked along Suzhou Creek recently, I found the river had become much more beautiful. The water was clean. Some small fish were swimming happily in it. The riverbank was lined with tall trees.
The creek looked totally different about a decade ago. At that time, I had to bear the stink (恶臭) of the water as I rushed along the river. People living nearby had to have their windows closed all day long. There was rubbish (垃圾) everywhere.
Thanks to the great efforts of the government and our neighborhood, the terrible smell has gradually disappeared. The river has become cleaner. The living environment of the citizens nearby has been greatly improved. Some fitness equipment has been installed (安装) along the river. Children and elderly people can exercise there. Some of them prefer playing chess under the shade of the trees.
The cleaner Suzhou Creek has also attracted visitors from all over the world. As I walked by the river, I saw some foreigners taking a cruise (乘船游览) and taking pictures.
The great changes along Suzhou Creek are among the most incredible (惊人的) achievements of Shanghai. With the economy growing rapidly, people’s awareness of environmental protection has also improved. Lots of researchers and experts tried their best to make Suzhou Creek a better place. I am proud of China and Chinese people. With our combined efforts, nothing is impossible and the future will be even brighter.

At table, the British people pay special attention to table manners. For example, they shouldn’t talk at table or beat tableware (餐具). They have a strict requirement on how to use knives and forks, while Americans seldom do so. They like fast and convenient food. American’s favorite food are hamburgers, fried chicken and pizza. These diets keep the American obesity rate high. But from the diet habits, it is not difficult for us to find that the American do everything vigorously (活泼地) and resolutely and do not spend too much on the trifles (琐事).

If you are planning a trip to France in the future, you should be careful with the roads you take because some of them may just disappear.
The Passage du Gois (格伊斯通道) in France, which is a natural passage first discovered in 1701, connects the mainland of France and a small island called Noirmoutier (努瓦尔穆捷岛). When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. The ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.
In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake. It is a way to show respect to the other person. Athletes from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they have already known well. When American friends met each other, they might only wave (挥手), or maybe just nod their heads.
In New Zealand, there is a special way of greeting called “Hongi”. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes. This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori, who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.
Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. In some countries, important people used to wear special rings. It was the custom for visitors to kiss these rings when they came for a meeting. In France, when people met, they sometimes kiss each other on the face.
In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. Even family members bow to each other. How low to bow depends on how respected the other person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick “hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.

    Mapping out the future
Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area and got us back. It made me wonder: Who created maps in the first place? After some searching online, I learned that people who map out roads, mountains, oceans, and other places around the world are called cartographers.
    What does a cartographer do?
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study geographic information. They use this information to make maps of places around the world. Some of these maps are digital. They are often used in GPS. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys (调查). Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, depend on surveyors for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure (测量) land, air space, and water areas.
What does it take to be a cartographer?
Most cartographers have a bachelor’s degree. The degree might be in cartography, geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in math and computer science.
With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.
    ___________
In the US, jobs for cartographers are expected to grow. This is due to the increasing use of maps in the armed forces. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of GPS.
According to what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost, I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!
46.In Paragraph 1, the writer included his experience in order to show ________.
A.the GPS is only needed when driving to another place
B.it is common to get lost on a trip
    C.a mapmaker’s work is important
D.the GPS is not always useful
47.The writer talked about cartographers from ________ aspects.
    A.two B.three C.four D.five
48.Surveyors can do all these following things except (除了) ________.
    A.doing ground surveys B.collecting information
C.doing some mapping D.doing some measuring
49.Which of the following best fits the blank in the passage?
    A.Will more cartographers be needed?
B.Will the cartographers be replaced by robots?
C.Why is it hard for cartographers to find jobs?
D.Why do cartographers make different maps?
Curiosity (好奇心) is part of human nature. Children are famous for wanting answers to thousands of questions. Books and TV shows often depend on curiosity. People keep reading or watching because they want to find out what happens. But curiosity also provides many advantages.
Learning is the easiest if you have a desire for knowledge. Curiosity can create that desire when you have a question you want an answer to. Many of history’s greatest discoveries were made by curious people. Thanks to their curiosity, people now know far more about the world and have useful technology to help them.
Even if you don’t plan to be an inventor or researcher, curiosity can still help you in the classroom. If you develop the joy of learning, classes will become more fun. And you’ll be better because you will fully take part in the process of learning. Even if you’re no longer a student, curiosity will make you get more information and then a better worker.
What do you do if you’re not already curious? Luckily, curiosity is a skill that can be improved. If you act like you’re curious, you’ll quickly start to actually feel curious. Often, the more you learn about a topic, the more interesting it becomes.
As you learn about a topic, collect as much information as possible. Read different kinds of books, listen to talks and ask questions. Don’t always get your information from the same source. Instead, learn to appreciate (欣赏) facts that different people know and the different opinions that they express. Ask a lot of questions. Remember, everyone knows something that you don’t. Find out what that is and ask about it. This lets you learn something and makes the other person happy by letting them show off their knowledge.
In the classroom or out of it, developing curiosity is sure to be valuable.
50.What does the writer mainly want us to do after reading the passage?
A.To make others happy. B.To show off our knowledge. C.To develop our curiosity. D.To become an inventor or a researcher.
51.According to the passage, curiosity ________.
A.is the only part of human nature B.depends on books and TV shows
C.can’t create the desire for answers D.may lead to many great discoveries
    52.What would happen without curiosity?
A.Students may become less interested in classes. B.People will know more about the world.
C.People can still become better workers. D.Students can’t improve it again.
53.What does the underlined word “desire” in the passage mean?
    A.wish B.chance C.choice D.pity
54.What is the best title of the passage?
A.A New Discovery B.A Natural Ability C.A Great Invention D.A Famous Creation

Americans don’t really use “Pardon?”. If you do, they will probably joke that you’re trying to sound pretentious (炫耀的) or joke that you’re British.
    I’m sorry.
We often use “I’m sorry” for past events. That’s to say, it is generally used to apologize for something you have already done. For example, if you step on someone’s foot on a crowded bus, you would say “I’m sorry” or “Sorry”.
    Excuse me.
This is generally a term to ask permission (允许) for something. For example, you’re walking through a crowded space and someone is in your way. You would say “Excuse me” to ask him/her to move out of your way.
    What?
Americans usually use it to ask someone to repeat himself/herself. If you want to be politer, you could say, I’m sorry, what was that?” or “Excuse me, what did you say?” or any other such thing. Most Americans just say “What?” though.
In our daily life, we can also use these terms by mixing them up. You could, for example, ask someone to move by saying “Sorry, would you mind moving?” It’s an extra-polite way to make your request.

    八、多任务混合阅读
Remember books? With pages. In the old days before computers, to get information, people read books and newspapers. Students spent hours and hours in the library, looking for information in the old books for homework. Now students can find anything on the Internet in seconds. The library was a place where everyone was quiet. Sing along to music? Never! Watch a movie on phone while they are reading? Impossible! But now students can watch videos about their research topic as they write a paper.
Before computers, articles were handwritten. If a student made a mistake, he or she would throw the paper away and start writing all over again. Now? If a student makes a mistake, he or she can just remove or cut it. Students type on their computers and edit (编辑) freely. But they should save (保存) their writing in time on the computer because it may stop working suddenly. Who wants to lose his or her hard work forever?
Communication online is easy and fun. While students are writing, they can discuss with friends in another window. Did you think they were chatting (聊天) with someone in the real same room? No! They’re chatting with everyone in their own room.
Technology helps us get important information in no time. In areas where bad weather is a problem, we can get warnings from our phones. Our local radio or TV station can give information about where to get help or what to do to keep our family and home safe. Technology is our friend!
85.In the old days before computers, people _________________ information.
86.How can a student correct his or her mistake while writing on the computer?

87.Why should students save their writing in time on the computer?

    120.例文
    Weekend or Not?
Jack has to attend lots of classes at weekends. He has little time for his favorite sport—soccer. Still, his parents are pushing him to do more tasks, which worries him a lot.
Nowadays, many students are under much pressure like Jack. Their parents believe it necessary for them to make full use of the weekends and learn as much as possible. As a result, some students are stressed out and therefore lose interest in learning anything. What’s worse, they may not be able to learn to manage their own life.
I do hope all the children can have the freedom to choose what they like to do and enjoy their weekends.
    121.例文
    Dear John,
Tomorrow is my birthday. We will have a birthday party at my home tomorrow afternoon. We will dance, sing and share a big birthday cake. It will be great if you can join us.
My home is not far from our school. If you come, you may go straight along People's Road, then turn right at Guangming Road, and then go across Xiangyang Road. And you will find a cinema on the left. My home is just beside it.
Hope to see you tomorrow at the party.
    Yours,
    Zhang Bin
    122.范文:
WeChat is becoming more and more popular now. A few years ago, people got in touch with each other by sending letters, calling or writing e-mails, but now more people are using WeChat. By using WeChat, making friends is becoming easier. We can also share our life experiences. However, there are also some problems. If we use WeChat too often, we will have less time to study. Sometimes it is not safe for students to make friends by WeChat. I think WeChat is helpful in our life, but we should use it carefully.
