Volunteering was not something that peaked my interest until a couple of years ago. I was not in an environment which talked about or encouraged volunteering back then, therefore I never saw it as something that could help both me and the community. I just felt like that is something people who have a lot of free time do. My view of volunteering changed when I started my university.
When I was around 19, I volunteered in schools and kindergartens, which were closely connected to my university degree, as that was what I felt most comfortable doing. Later, when I realized that I'm being quite stagnant —I didn't really get anything new out of opportunities closely tied to my field of study, I decided to branch out by volunteering at some events which are a bit out of my comfort zone. I volunteered at events like the Gymnastics World Cup, different Art Festivals and similar places where I didn't necessarily participate as a creator but as a coordinator of other volunteers.
The most important and life— changing volunteering experience for me came in 2018 when I decided that volunteering locally just was not enough anymore and I went to volunteer abroad. I spent a month and a half in Romania teaching children with fewer opportunities English. That experience not only helped me to better my teaching skills, but also completely changed me as a person, making me meet people from all over the world.
All of these experiences brought me here, on an ESN(Erasmus Student Network) project in Zagreb at home. This is a project I've been excited for a long time because it meant
I was going to change my surroundings for a longer period of time, which obviously meant more challenges and more personal growth for me. Don't ever let anyone tell you that volunteering is something you shouldn't do, because it's one of the best things you could ever do, both for yourself and for the people you're going to help along the way.
    24. Why did volunteering never appeal to the writer before attending university?
    A. He felt he was too young to do voluntary jobs.
    B. He didn't have much time to do volunteering work.
    C. He was prevented from doing volunteering then.
    D. He didn't fully understand voluntary work then.
    25. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word" stagnant "in paragraph 2?
    A. Lifeless. B. Unproductive. C. Full. D. Complete.
    26. Which is his experience of volunteering abroad?
    A. He volunteered at the Gymnastics World Cup.
    B. He worked on an ESN project in Zagreb,
    C. He taught children English in Romania.
    D. He worked in different Art Festivals.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The advantages of doing volunteering.
    B. My experience of volunteering abroad.
    C. The difficulties in doing volunteering.
    D. My personal story of doing volunteering
    C
Nowadays, smartphones fill us with text messages. Social media attack us with endless notices. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones. Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
Thoreau would beg to differ. As a writer who claimed the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, he went against his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of huge factories and powerful machines such as steam engines. Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden.
In Walden, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement: We are not living deliberate or meaningful lives, thanks to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient. Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, "Men have become the tools of their tools".
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by shortening these technological use. Personally, I've done so in two ways. First, I don't use data on my cellphone. I only use it to call or text. Second, I quit most social media. As a result, my technology distracts me very little, which allows me to live in. less confusion and, therefore, more deliberation. Sure, that's not as extreme as Thoreau-moving to the woods, but it's a realistic move I can make toward a more meaningful life.
One final clarification: Thoreau's message of simplicity isn't about rejecting all technology. It is, however, rejecting technological consumerism, or compulsively buying more technology for the sake of having more technology. This is why Walden is such an important book for technology education. Simplicity means minimizing material distractions so as to maximize life's meaning.
    28. What do we know about Thoreau in paragraph 2?
    A. He lived in the high industrial building.
    B. He moved to a place close to nature.
    C. He thought highly of modern technology.
    D. He was fond of adventure in urban areas.
    29. Why are people not living meaningful lives according to Thoreau?
    A. Men haven't made full use of their technology .
    B. Some digital devices are inconvenient to use.
    C. Men have become the slaves of modern technology.
    D. Modern machines are powerful enough to control people.
    30. How does the author shorten technological use?
    A. By using date on the phone. B. By abusing technological devices.
    C. By living in less confusion. D. By quitting using most social media.
    31. Which statement will Thoreau probably agree with from the last paragraph?
    A. Less is more. B. The more, the better.
    C. Knowledge is power. D. No pains, no gains.
    D
The plastic value chain faces . two key challenges: controlling plastic waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The chemical industry has a unique role to play in addressing these challenges. Cooperation between upstream and downstream partners is essential to develop solutions that reduce plastic pollution and emissions in plastic production. SABIC(Saudi Basic Industries Corporation)is at the forefront of these efforts.
SABIC has set specific goals, including a commitment to achieve icarbon neutrality(碳中 和) by 2050. To realize this goal, the company has outlined a Carbon Neutrality Roadmap that focuses on five pathways: energy efficiency; renewable energy; electrification; carbon capture, usage and storage(CCUS); and green/blue hydrogen.
Recognizing the scale of the challenges, SABIC understands that progress cannot be made alone. The company actively cooperates through initiatives, such as the Low — Carbon Emitting Technologies(LCET) initiative, where chemical companies work together to accelerate the development of technology solutions for carbon neutrality.
Partnerships are also vital in addressing plastic waste. SABIC is a founding member of the Alliance(联盟) to End Plastic Waste, an organization that brings stakeholders(利益相关者) from across the value chain together to take collective action on the ground. The alliance works towards a future where plastic products never end up in landfills or oceans, but instead are reused or transformed into new products. SABIC is also actively involved in driving the transition from a linear to a circular carbon economy. As responsible plastic producers, SABIC recognizes the importance of offering sustainable materials to customers.
Although the chemical industry has made significant progress, there is still more work to do to achieve the goals. SABIC is already making progress on the complex, long—term effort required and will continue to partner with others to increase the solutions needed to push meaningful change.
    32. What kind of difficulty is the plastic value chain faced with?
    A. Exploring renewable energy. B. Reducing plastic production.
    C. Decreasing plastic pollution. D. Achieving carbon neutrality.
    33. What is vital for chemical companies according to paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
    A. Technology development. B. Partners' cooperation.
    C. Carbon neutrality. D. Sustainable development.
    34. Which best describes SABIC's efforts?
    A. Fruitless B. Predictable. C. Frustrating. D. Rewarding.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. SABIC: A leader mapping the path forward.
    B. SABIC: A leader solving the plastic pollution.
    C. SABIC: A leader reducing greenhouse gas emission.
    D. SABIC:A leader founding the plastic value chain.

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all grown and my husband is working.
Two years ago I set off in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said "Aren't you scared?" or "What if your car break down?". I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my 230,000+ miles car good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane over. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane, I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband and he didn't answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
