Bessie Mae Kelley was an animation (动画) pioneer, yet much of her story and work was lost to history and left undocumented—until now. The incredible discovery of Kelley’s rich past was made by Mindy Johnson, who spent five years searching for evidence.
According to Mindy Johnson, Kelley was studying art at New York’s Pratt Institute, when, as a part of the first generation of cinema, she fell in love with the medium. Kelley began working in the industry doing menial jobs, but she worked her way up and she was eventually working alongside Max Fleischer, Paul Terry and Walter Lantz, animators who were household names.
Kelley hand-drew cartoons in cooperation with Paul Terry for his famed animated adaptation of Aesop’s Fables, including the mouse couple that came to be known as Milton and Mary. “Even Walt Disney publicly stated that when he began his studio in Kansas City, he wanted to make cartoons as good as Aesop’s Fables,” Johnson said.
And earlier this week, Johnson presented her discoveries at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, where she also premiered (首映) two restored short films hand-drawn and directed by Kelley. The first is a five-minute film entitled Flower Fairies, completed in 1921. The second three-minute film from 1922 is called A Merry Christmas. Previously, historians had considered Tissa David to be the earliest example of a woman who directed her own hand-drawn work Bonjour Paris in 1953. The earliest surviving animated film directed and animated by a woman would be Lotte Reiniger’s The Ornament of the Lovestruck Heart from 1919, which is far from the hand-drawn variety.
Johnson, who teaches animation history at California Institute of the Arts and Drexel University, says, “Discovering Kelley’s contribution to animation isn’t just about filling in the gaps of history. It also motivates a new generation of animators. I can see my female students standing a little taller and more confident, about their work when they learn about Kelley.”
4.What does the underlined word “menial” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Unskilled. B.Demanding. C.Well-paid. D.Risk-taking.5.What does the author want to show by mentioning Kelley’s work on Aesop’s Fables?
A.Her fondness for animals. B.Her good teamwork spirit.
C.Her early influence in animation. D.Her close relationship with Walt Disney.6.Which is the earliest-known animation hand-drawn and directed by a woman?
    A.Bonjour Paris.
    B.Flower Fairies.
    C.A Merry Christmas.
D.The Ornament of the Lovestruck Heart.7.What does Johnson think of the discovery of Kelley’s role in animation?
    A.It excites students’interest in history.
B.It is an inspiration to female animators.
C.It helps reexamine women animators’ work.
D.It is a reminder of the value of surviving films.

You’ve probably often read about quiet firing on the Internet. According to a recent LinkedIn News survey of 20,000 + workers, 87% believe quiet firing to be real, with only 13% denying its existence. 48% of the employees have seen it happen in their workforce, and 35% claimed to have been subject to it themselves.
Quiet firing describes the practice of gradually freezing an employee out until they are left with no choice but to resign. Employers quietly fire out of fear of having tough conversations with employees. Rather than risk a worker growing angry at being fired, these employers gradually make the employee want to leave. Sometimes there are also financial considerations that matter. Employees who hand in the notice will not get a severance package (离职金). Still, companies often replace them with fresh and inexperienced workers who get much less salary.
So, how can you tell when it’s happening to you? A sign of quiet firing could be that you’re not getting new assignments that are taking the organization to the next level. Your workload is actually increasing, but it swells to the point of becoming unmanageable. A crucial sign is that you’re getting the cold shoulder and the boss is not making an effort to interact with you.
If you are doubtful that you are being quietly fired, first determine whether the treatment is directly relevant to you or applicable to all employees. Lack of promotions or failure to give feedback (反馈) might mean mismanagement rather than quiet firing. If you are being quietly fired, ask managers about the cause. Or, talk about your current role and where you want to be, and ask for clear instructions. If you do not see significant progress on the timeline, then perhaps start networking and job hunting to find another opportunity.
8.What is the first paragraph intended to tell us about quiet firing?
A.It is familiar with netizens. B.It is common among employees.
C.It is a newly coined term on social media. D.It is a new type of relation in the workforce.9.Why do employers use quiet firing as a workforce reduction strategy?
A.To recover the company’s losses. B.To save costs and avoid conflicts.
C.To hire more experienced workers. D.To escape complex legal procedures.10.How may an employee feel when he is being quietly fired?
A.Unvalued. B.Partially responsible. C.Guilty. D.Fully trusted.11.What should you do at first if you suspect you are being quietly fired?
A.Try to learn a new skill in another area. B.Start seeking new opportunities elsewhere.
C.Express a desire to move up in the company. D.Make sure whether the firing is specific to you.

It is estimated that 95 percent of the ocean’s depths remain unexplored, partly due to limitations in technology. But now, MIT researchers have developed a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that is about 100,000 times more energy-efficient than other undersea cameras. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and transmits (传送) image data wirelessly through the water.
The sea is noisy. The autonomous camera transforms mechanical energy from sound waves travelling through water into electrical energy. The camera can also store energy, should it build up enough power for its imaging work. As well as taking photographs, the camera uses sound waves to send the image data it collects to a receiver that reconstructs the data into the appropriate image.
Because it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before someone has to pick it up, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. It could also be used to take images of ocean pollution or monitor the health and growth of fish raised in the fisheries. “The most exciting application of this camera for me personally is in the context of climate monitoring. We are building climate models, but we are missing data from over 95 percent of the ocean. This technology could help us build more accurate climate models and better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world,” says associate professor Fadel Adib.
The researchers successfully tested the camera in several underwater environments. However, the new camera can only transmit data 40 meters from the receiver and the amount of memory makes it limited for long-term use. They plan to enhance the device so it is practical for feeding real-time images and even recording full-motion underwater videos in more underwater settings.
12.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How the camera works. B.What the camera consists of.
C.Where the image data is collected. D.How the electrical energy is produced.13.What potential use for the camera interests Fadel Adib most?
A.Making accurate maps of the ocean floor.
B.Searching for new species in the remote oceans.
C.Monitoring the growth and health of the farmed fishes.
D.Tracking the effects of climate change on the undersea world.14.What could the further development of the device focus on?
A.The reduction of its building cost.
B.The extension of the receiver’s life.
C.The improvement of the imaging quality.
D.The expansion of its memory and wireless range.15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A major breakthrough in sound technology
B.A tough challenge of building climate models
    C.Scientists create battery-free underwater cameras
D.Researchers can explore unknown areas of the ocean
