As a child, I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated(不协调的). However, I did love to run because I felt as if I were flying. But this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden(卧床不起的) for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.
When therapy wasn't working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga, to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend(天赐之物) because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105℉, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I'd feel a surge of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, at the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I wasn't disturbed by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4 months of practicing hot yoga, I made some progress. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started losing weight from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I'd taken a bottle of energy drink and just gave me the burst that helped my knee heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I had no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk food and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me have more confidence and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity(人道). Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I'm part of a bigger picture in life!
    24. Why did the author decide to attend a yoga class?
    A. Her injury wasn't so serious. B. The treatment was of little use.
    C. She attempted to have a charming figure. D. Her parents asked her to have a try there.
    25. How could the author keep staying for longer in the yoga room according to paragraph 3?
    A. She tried to think positively. B. She had a rest from time to time.
    C. She felt comfortable in the room. D. She was encouraged by her trainer.
    26. What is the theme of paragraph 4?
    A. How the author got her knee to heal.
    B. The effect the author's practising yoga had on her.
    C. The problems the author met with when doing yoga.
    D. How the author made her schedule work out in the room.
    27. What inspired the author to think she could do well in yoga?
    A. She had completely recovered from her knee injury.
    B. She was helped by her trainer with much patience.
    C. She was attracted by her classmates' yoga poses.
    D. She fully understood the theory of yoga.
    C
People in many countries are longing for the good old days. When asked if life in their country is better or worse today than it was 50 years ago, 31% of Britons, 41% of Americans and 46% of the French say it's worse.
Psychologists say this kind of nostalgia(怀旧) is natural and sometimes even useful: It helps give us a sense of stability and predictability. But when exactly were the good old days? Podcaster Jason Feifer gave us an answer to this question. The most popular answer seemed to be the 1950s.
In fact, many in the 1950s thought that the good old days were to be found a generation earlier, in the 1920s. But in the 1920s, child psychologist John Watson warned that because of increasing divorce rates, the features of the traditional American families would soon stop existing. Many people at the time idealized the Victorian era, when families were strong and children respected their elders. People have been longing for the good old days at least since the invention of writing 5,000 years ago. Scientists have discovered tablets(碑) which complain that family life isn't what it used to be.
Why are human beings always so nostalgic for past eras that seemed difficult and dangerous to those who lived through them? One possibility is that we know we survived past dangers, so they seem smaller now. But we can never be certain we will solve the problems we are facing today. Radio didn't ruin the younger generation, but maybe the smartphone will.
Another reason is that historical nostalgia is often colored by personal nostalgia. When were the good old days? Was it, by chance, the incredibly short period when you happened to be young? A U. S. poll found that people born in the 1930s and 1940s thought the 1950s was America's best decade, while those born in the 1960s and 1970s preferred the 1980s.
This kind of nostalgia has neurological(神经学上的) roots. Researchers have found that we form more memories during adolescence and early adulthood than any other period of our lives, and when we think about the past, this is the period we most often return to. Moreover, as we grow more distant from past events, we tend to remember them more positively.
Obviously, some things really were better in the past. But our instinctive nostalgia for the good old days can easily misguide us, with dangerous consequences. Longing for the past and fear of the future hold back the experiments and innovations that drive progress. As inventor William Petty observed, "When a new invention is first proposed, in the beginning every man objects.. not one inventor of a hundred experiences this mental suffering."
Petty was right: Vaccination, steam engines, railroads and electricity all met with strong resistance when they were first introduced. The point isn't to show how silly previous generations were. The same kinds of anxieties have been expressed in our own time about innovations like the Internet, video games and stem-cell research.
And not all fears about the future are unreasonable. New technologies do result in accidents, they disturb traditional cultures and habits, and they destroy old jobs while creating new ones. But the only way to learn how to make the best use of new technologies and reduce risks is by trial and error. The future won't be perfect, but neither were the good old days.
    28. What do psychologists think of nostalgia in paragraph 2?
    A. It is somewhat beneficial. B. It sounds unusual.
    C. It doesn't last long. D. It can cause mental problems.
    29. Why did a lot of people in the 1920s prefer the Victorian era?
    A. On account of new technologies developing fast.
    B. Because of people's living standards improving a lot.
    C. Owing to children's being taken better care of in a family.
    D. Due to better and stronger relationships between family members.
    30. What may cause some people to have an affectionate feeling for the past?
    A. They feel dangers and problems in the past appear smaller.
    B. They have little knowledge of today's advanced technology.
    C. They are more often cheated by others now than before.
    D. They can't get along well with others in the society.
    31. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
    A. The old days were not as perfect as the future will be.
    B. There are some people who feel anxious about innovations.
    C. People should take into consideration others' knowledge when inventing things.
    D. The Internet, video games and stem-cell research pose great threats to humanity.
    D
The US government took extraordinary steps on Sunday after the historic failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), assuring depositors(存款人) at the institution that they would be able to quickly access all of their money. The announcement came amid fears that the factors that caused the California-based bank to fail could cause a banking contagion(漫延), and only a couple of hours before trading opened on Asian markets.
The Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said on Sunday that all SVB clients will be protected-including accounts that exceed the FDIC-insured limit of $250,000. "Depositors will have access to all of their money starting on Monday, March 13. No losses associated with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank will be borne by the taxpayers," the agencies said in a joint statement. "This step will ensure that the US banking system continues to perform its vital roles in protecting deposits and providing access to the money deposited in the bank for households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth."
Regulators had worked over the weekend to try to come up with a buyer for SVB, the second-largest bank failure in history. Those efforts appeared to have come up empty as of Sunday.
The regulators also announced that the New York-based Signature Bank had failed and its property was taken on Sunday. At more than $110 billion in assets(资产), Signature Bank is now the third-largest bank failure in US history. The officials also said that depositors at the bank, which was closed on Sunday by the New York state financial regulator, would not bear the loss. Signature's shareholders and unsecured debtors will not be protected, and management has been removed, the officials said.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had said earlier on Sunday that she was working with banking regulators to respond after SVB became the largest bank to fail since the 2008 financial crisis, during which Washington Mutual collapsed. SVB had $ 209 billion in assets and $175.4 billion in deposits at the time of failure, the FDIC said in a statement. The bank mostly served technological companies. "We want to make sure that the troubles that exist at one bank don't create contagion to others," Yellen told CBS' Face the Nation.
    32. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. The cause of the failure of Silicon Valley Bank. B. The drawback of the US banking system.
    C. The reaction of the public to the step. D. The purpose of the measure.
    33. How did the regulators deal with the failure of the New York-based Signature Bank?
    A. The unsecured debtors will bear the loss themselves.
    B. The management of the bank is still in power temporarily.
    C. The benefits of signature's shareholders will be guaranteed.
    D. It was closed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
    34. What does the underlined word "collapse" in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Come to light. B. Come to a conclusion. C. Come to an end. D. Come to life.
    35. Which can serve as the best title for the news report?
    A. US to rescue failed banks' depositors
    B. Regulators try to come up with buyer for SVB
    C. US banking system to promote economic growth
    D. Factors causing SVB to fail lead to banking contagion

Throughout history, many species of animals have been threatened with extinction(灭绝). When Europeans
first arrived in North America, more than 60 million buffalo(野牛) lived on the continent. But hunting the buffalo was so popular during the 19th century that by 1900 the animal's population had fallen to about 400 before the government stepped in to protect the species. 36 . Illegal hunters kill the animals for the ivory(象牙)in their tusks.
Yet not all animals with commercial value face this threat. The cow, for example, is a valuable source of food, but no one worries that the cow will soon be extinct. Why does the commercial value of ivory threaten the elephant while the commercial value of beef protects the cow?
37 . However, cows are private goods. Elephants wander freely without any owners. The hunter has a strong motivation to kill as many elephants as he can find. Illegal hunters are numerous. Each has only a slight motivation to preserve the elephant population. By contrast, cattle live on farms that are privately owned. 38 because he harvests the benefit of these efforts.
Governments have tried to solve the elephant's problem in two ways. Some countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory. 39 . And elephant populations have continued to decrease. By contrast, other countries, such as Malawi and Namibia, have made elephants private goods and allow people to kill elephants, but only those that belong to them.
40 with private ownership and the profit purpose now on its side. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle pointed out the problem with common resources, "What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others."
    A. They attract different groups of hunters
    B. People pay much attention others' property
    C. But these laws have been hard to put into effect
    D. The reason is that elephants are a common resource
    E. In some countries today, the elephant faces a similar situation
    F. The African elephant might someday be as safe from extinction as the cow
    G. Each farmer makes great effort to maintain the cattle population on his farm

    (Text 1)
M: Mum, I'm leaving for Vancouver tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
W: Honey, there is construction on the road on the way to the train station, Maybe you should go one hour earlier. That leaves extra time in case of bad traffic.
    (Text 2)
M: The car won't start, I think we're out of gas. Maybe we can catch a bus to get to the restaurant.
W: There aren't any buses here. Let's walk. It's not far.
    (Text 3)
M: Can you help me with my maths homework? I can't do it.
W: Sure. How about tomorrow morning? I've got a French class this afternoon.
    M: OK. Thank you!
    (Text 4)
W: Let's watch a documentary about volcanoes. But I'm afraid it's too bright in here. Could you please turn off the light while I turn on the TV?
M: OK. And I'll bring some snacks.
    (Text 5)
W: Wow! Look at all these different places to eat! There are so many choices. What are you going to have, Dan?
M: I'm so hungry. I want a burger and a large order of fries.
    (Text 6)
W: There they are! At last I've found them. I've been looking for them everywhere.
M: What? Your keys? You're always losing them
W: I know, and I really thought I'd lost them for good this time.
M: Why don't you make sure you put them in the same place? Then you'd have the satisfaction of finding them whenever you want them.
    W: Good idea.
    (Text 7)
W: Hi, Tim. What are you looking at?
    M. Oh, I've been reading some online reviews. I want to buy a digital camera, but I'm still not sure which one to get.
W: That's the problem with buying one from the Internet. You can't try something out before you buy it. Perhaps you should go to a store.
M: It's a shame that the local shop has such a small range of cameras. There's the mall, I suppose.
W: Oh, no, I wouldn't go there at this time of year. It'll be very crowded. The shop down the road is a lot better now than it used to be. There are new owners. You should give it a try.
M: Okay. Thanks for your advice.
    (Text 8)
W: Now, breathe in and out, Good, I'm going to take your temperature, OK, that seems normal, Now lie down, please, If I push here, does it hurt?
M: Ow! A little bit. Do you think it's my heart?
W: Your heart? Why would it be your heart? You're sixteen years old.
M: My mum says I eat the wrong things and I eat too quickly. She thinks I'll have a heart attack.
W: I see. Well, your heart is fine. I think you've got indigestion. But your mother's right. You need to eat more slowly and you should drink more water. I'm going to give you some medicine. And you should come back for a check next week.
M: Aren't you going to do a blood test?
    W: No, I don't think that's necessary.
    M: Oh, good, thank you.
    (Text 9)
M: Hi, you must be Sarah, I can tell from your picture, I'm Michael, Finally we meet! So we're going to be classmates this semester!
W: Yes, I recognize you from your photo, too! I'm so glad to meet you in person. I see from your T-shirt that you like baseball. I'm a big fan, too!
M: Well, the T-shirt was a present from my brother, who's a baseball player. Look at the back-it has a photo of all the players on his team. They won the city championship this summer.
W: That's great. I love to watch baseball. What about you? Do you play a sport?
M: Yes, I play tennis. What else do you like to do?
W: Well, what I like to do best is dance. I'm studying classical ballet, but I also like to dance to pop music.
M: Cool. Do you want to check out the local clubs this weekend?
W: Oh, yeah. And the restaurants, too, Speaking of that, I'm hungry!
M: Me too. How about trying the place up the street? I'd like to get a good hamburger.
    W: Let's go!
    (Text 10)
W: Hi, everyone! My name's Lily and I'm a swimmer. I'm talking to you today because I want to encourage you to take up swimming. It's a great sport. It isn't expensive to do and it keeps you healthy. I learnt to swim when I was about five. I didn't learn it at the local leisure centre, but in my uncle's pool. When I started primary school, I joined a swimming club and I went swimming twice a week. I had a lovely trainer called Anna. She encouraged me to enter competitions and I did quite well. Nearly every Saturday a group of us from the swimming club went to other towns to have competitions. That was fun. After I'd won quite a lot of competitions, I moved into the advanced class at the club and I had a trainer who was once an Olympic winner! He wanted me to receive training every day after school for an hour and a half. My parents didn't agree because I needed to spare some time for my school work. But they let me go three days a week. I love swimming and I would really recommend it to everyone.

    书面表达
    One possible version:
    Dear editor,
Nowadays, I find that some people who enter museums or galleries mainly use their mobile phones to take pictures of the artworks. They don't intend to stay for long to watch and appreciate them with their hearts or in a thoughtful way. With the digital age coming, it is a common phenomenon. Thus, I propose people take more time to enjoy the works of art with their eyes and hearts instead of taking more time to photograph them.
In my opinion, not only can appreciating artworks attentively let us know the ideas and values they convey, but also it can improve our aesthetic taste and enrich our spiritual world.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
