Russ Fee was asleep inside his tent last summer in Canada's Banff National Park when a series of screams shocked him awake. Throwing on his shoes and grabbing a lantern his wife had handed him, he ran out to investigate. Despite the darkness, he could make out a neighboring tent. Backing out was a wolf, dragging something in his teeth—a man.
Moments earlier, Elisa and Matt, were asleep with their two young children when the wolf tore into their tent. "It was like something out of a horror movie," Elisa recalled. For three minutes, Matt threw his body in front of Elisa and the boys and fought against the wolf. At one point, Matt got the upper hand, but the wolf turned the tables and dragged Matt outside while Elisa was pulling on his legs trying to get him back.
It was then that Russ Fee entered the picture. He ran at the beast, kicking it in the hip. The wolf dropped Matt and emerged from the tent. Fee felt like he had hit someone that was way out of his weight class.
Before the wolf could turn its anger on Fee, Matt, his arms bloodied, restarted the battle. The men threw at the wolf with rocks, forcing it back. Then the families fled to the shelter of the Fees, minivan and called an ambulance.
"Attacks are so rare that a person here has a greater chance of being killed by a dog, lightning, a bee sting, or a car collision with a deer than being injured by a wolf" said Matt.
Fee did think about drawing back, if  less heroic, during the heat of battle. The moment the wolf locked eyes with him, Fee said, "I immediately regretted kicking it."

As COVID-19 hit and the world went into varying levels of lockdown (封锁), it became difficult for researchers to know what was happening in the ocean. But now, you can join the eOceans platform to help researchers gather data on oceans and ocean ecosystems in real-time.
Downloading the eOceans app on your smartphone and logging what you see when you are on the coast or in the ocean, including any animals, people, pollution or even an empty beach, you can help researchers monitor the world’s oceans. The app lets you note your observations as well as upload photos. This information is then linked to your geographical location and is made accessible to scientists studying that region. Using eOceans data, researchers can remotely monitor how oceans and coastal communities worldwide are happening, including in the context of the pandemic (疫情).
In reality, observations recorded through eOceans are already providing valuable insights. During Australia’s lockdown, for example, the largest group of turtles in the country’s history was spotted by researchers using eOceans data. And in Hawaii, data from the app suggests that clearer waters are associated with a reduction in tourists during the pandemic.
Negative impacts of the pandemic on the ocean have also been picked up through the app, including an increase in pollution from personal protective equipment, as well as pandemic-related interruptions to marine (海洋的) recovery following a 2019 oil leak in Brazilian waters. In future, data from eOceans could help enable early detection of hazards (危害), such as oil leaks, so that they can be dealt with sooner, says Christine Ward-Paige, founder and chief scientist at eOceans.
“Till now, more than 1,000 people have already joined the eOceans platform,” says Ward-Paige. “But more data on wild life spotted along coastlines, as well as information on how people are using these spaces, are still needed.”
8.How can people help researchers monitor the ocean through the eOceans platform?
A.By downloading and observing some data of hazards.
B.By spotting and marking the previous marine recovery.
C.By collecting and uploading timely oceanic information.
D.By detecting and reporting your present geographical location.
9.Which discovery has been made based on the eOceans data?
A.An oil leak occurring in Australian waters.
B.The largest turtle found in Australia’s history.
C.A factor contributing to clearer waters in Hawaii.
D.A boom of tourism appearing during the pandemic.
10.What is Ward-Paige’s attitude towards the future of eOceans platform?
    A.Indifferent. B.Optimistic.
    C.Doubtful. D.Anxious.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Keeping an eye on the ocean. B.Caring about the ocean pollution.
C.Showing love to coastal creatures. D.Monitoring the quality of seawater.

    The Undergoing Welfare Reform
While still in its early stages, welfare reform has already been judged a great success in many states -- at least in getting people off welfare. It's estimated that more than 2 million people have left the rolls since 1994.
In the past four years, welfare rolls in Athens County have been cut in half. But 70 percent of the people who left in the past two years took jobs that paid less than $6 an hour. The result: The Athens County poverty rate still remains at more than 30 percent -- twice the national average. For advocates for the poor, that's an indication that much more needs to be done.
"More people are getting jobs, but it's not making their lives any better," says Kathy Lairn, a policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.
A center analysis of US Census data nationwide found that last year, a greater percentage of single, female-headed households were earning money on their own, but that average income for these households actually went down.
But for many, the fact that poor people are able to support themselves almost as well without government aid as they did with it is in itself a huge victory.
"Welfare was a poison. It was a toxin that was poisoning the family," says Robert Rector, a welfare-reform policy analyst. "The reform is changing the moral climate in low-income communities. It's beginning to rebuild the work ethic, which is much more important."
Mr. Rector and others argued that once "the habit of dependency is cracked," then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving living standards.
12.Why don't people enjoy their lives better when they get jobs?
A.Because they are used to relying on welfare to make livings.
B.Because the cost of living is higher than before.
C.Because many families are not satisfied with their income.
D.Because their wages are very low.
13.From the passage we know that the reconstruction of is the core of the reform.
    A.government aids B.work ethic
    C.welfare funds D.moral awareness
14.From the example of the Athens Country, we know great efforts should be made for the poor to ________.
A.improve their living standards B.help them be employed
C.get them off welfare. D.increase their wage
15.From the passage, it can be inferred that the author .
A.is completely certain about the success of welfare reform
B.thinks that welfare reform has done little good for the poor
C.considers welfare reform successful on the whole
D.insists welfare reform has increased the government's burden

    How to Set Goals
Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move through life. 16
Find out your life goals. Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What do you want to achieve today, in a year, and in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as “I want to be happy” or “I want to help people” . 17
Set specific (具体的) goals. Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve. Research shows that setting a specific goal makes you more likely to achieve it. 18 For example, “Be healthier” is too big and vague to be a helpful goal. “I want to eat more vegetables, and I want to run a marathon” is better.
Write out your goals. Be detailed, be clear, and include your steps. 19 Keep your list in a place where you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.
20 You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to reevaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to keep you on track towards your larger life goals? Allow yourself the flexibility (灵活性) to make some small changes to your goals.
    A.Adjust your goals.
    B.Track and measure your progress.
C.Having a plan will help push you ahead.
D.Writing them down tends to make them a little more real.
E.Here are some important ideas that you may find helpful.
F.Consider what you hope to achieve in 10, 15, or 20 years.
G.Remember that you may need to break large goals into smaller goals.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

由since可知,句子时态是现在完成时,主语region是单数,因此空格处是has become,故填has become。
此处应用介词including,和后面的短语一起作后置定语,修饰a series of special offers,故填including。
    46.One possible version:
    Life in the Future
In the future, man’s life will be very different from that of today.
First, with the development of medicine, people will live longer and healthier. Second, because of the discovery of new energy, the environmental pollution will be under control. Third, people’s daily life will change greatly, too. For example, robots will do most of the housework for you; You can take your video mobile phone with you and see the caller while speaking. The most exciting thing is that man will have more free time and each city will have its own spaceport,so you can even go into space for your holidays!
    由于:because of→due to
    也:too→as well
    空闲时间:spare time→free time
    每个:each→every
First, with the development of medicine, people will live longer and healthier.
First, as medicine develops, people will live longer and healthier.
1】You can take your video mobile phone with you and see the caller while speaking.(运用了状语从句的省略)
2】The most exciting thing is that man will have more free time and each city will have its own spaceport, so you can even go into space for your holidays!(运用了that引导的表语从句)
    47.Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly. I spared no efforts to hold on as hard as I could and my dad was trying to keep up, extremely worried about my safety. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath. Relieved, we looked around trying to find the track. However, it was nowhere to be found. So aimlessly did the frightened horse run that we got lost unconsciously.
    Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Nothing in sight was familiar and neither did we know where the farm house was. Just at the point of desperation, from the distance came a faint voice. “It must be Uncle Paul,” I exclaimed excitedly. That we didn’t come back for dinner made him realize something unusual might have happened. So my uncle went out to look for us. Finally, we reached our uncle’s farm house safe and sound.
    使惊吓:scare/frighten
    努力:spare no efforts to /try one’s best
    叫喊:exclaim/shout
    疯狂:wildly / madly
    担心:worried /concerned
【点睛】[高分句型1] Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly.
[高分句型2] Nothing in sight was familiar and neither did we know where the farm house was.
