Teenagers always dream about becoming actors. It appears admirable to be an actor. But the fact is well beyond their expectations. A successful actor will have endless meetings to attend. Moreover, a film star will have no private space, because he has too many exciting fans as well as crazy reporters to deal with. As to an unsuccessful actor, life is even tougher.

I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra money to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I took part in a lot of TV advertisements for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder.

I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put a letter in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I opened it, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus (马戏团). I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film!

When I was at drama school, there was a course in clown skills. I gained top marks in this course. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I’d had in mind when I went to drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up.

I had expected to prove myself in public and become the focus of the world. My dream was to be the brightest star and enjoyed cheers from my fans. However, now I have the opportunity to travel around the world. I am more than an actor. Actually I am a joy postman. I have visited over 32 different countries and amused millions of people.

    24. When you become a film star, you will find life ______.

    A. exciting B. admirable C. attractive D. challenging

    25. Which of the following can best describe the author’s feeling after he opened the letter?

    A. Disappointed. B. Anxious. C. Satisfied. D. Hopeful.

    26. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A. The writer is unsatisfied with his job as a clown.

    B. The writer did quite well in his clown tricks class.

    C. The secretary thought the writer would be a great film star when seeing him.

    D. The writer had to look for acting jobs at his drama school after graduation.

    27. What of would be the best title for the text?

    A. The Life of an actor

    B. Realize my dream of an actor

    C. More than an actor

    D. To be a clown

    C

He’s as big as a small golden dog and covered with scales (鳞片). He is the pangolin (穿山甲), an endangered animal.

According to the wildlife trade monitoring organization Traffic, about one million pangolins were killed from 2000 through 2013, mainly for their scales, which are used in medicine. Pangolins are sensitive creatures and picky eaters that only eat certain species of ants, a diet that’s very difficult to copy in the food chain.

“In the last decade, there’s been a huge growth trade in pangolins between continents, especially their scales,” says Dan Challender, chair of the pangolin specialist group. Previously, most pangolin killing happened within Asia, he says. This shift means that Asian pangolins are becoming difficult to find but that the value of the scales makes it worth the extra cost to take pangolins from Africa to Asia secretly.

All eight species of pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia, are in danger of extinction due to the illegal trade. International trade in the four species of Asian pangolins has been banned since 2000. In the past few years, a ban on international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.

Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some local groups in South and Southeast Asia. Their parts also are used in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa as traditional medicine. Typically dried, ground into powder, and put into pills, pangolin scales are used in a range of traditional medicines to help mothers who have given birth to babies to recover. But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.

28 What do you know about pangolins from Paragraph 2?

    A. Their meat is very delicious.

    B. Their scales are of great value.

    C. They are smaller than young dogs.

    D. They are on the top of the food chain.

    29. Why are pangolins brought from Africa to Asia?

    A. Pangolins are cheaper in Africa.

    B. No laws protect pangolins in Africa.

    C. People in Asia can really save pangolins.

    D. Pangolins have sharply decreased in numbers in Asia.

    30. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?

    A. Pangolins have many different species.

    B. The bans on pangolin trade are ineffective.

    C. People used to take advantage of pangolins in different ways.

    D. Governments have tried to contribute to the protection of pangolins.

    31. What’s the author’s attitude towards pangolins’ future?

    A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Confident.

    D

Parents annoyed by their little ones’ picky food choices often sigh in anger, thinking, “They’ll grow out of it by college.” Maybe not, suggests a new study from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Some young people continue their picky eating into early adulthood, often restricting their diets to 10 foods or even fewer. Such a deficient diet can mean they’re not getting the fibre and vegetables they need, which could be a health problem. They study also suggests picky eaters may also be experiencing other challenges such as social phobias (恐惧症), including around eating. The social phobia is the fear of being judged by others during everyday activities, often resulting in fear or embarrassment.

For the study, researchers surveyed 488 Midwestern college students. About 40% of the students were identified as picky eaters. And about 65% of those respondents said they ate fewer than 10 foods. “We asked participants to just tell us what challenges around picky eating might have had or any benefits they might see, and people answered differently in terms of what has an effect on them,” said co-author Lauren Dial, a doctoral student at Bowling Green State at the time of the study.

Many indicated they’d eat less or not at all outside the home. One 19-year-old man said he’d drink water half the time “due to my picky eating”, according to the study. Another 18-year-old said, “Sometimes there are some awkward comments when I am eating with my girlfriend and her family.” A 23-year-old woman said her parents would get frustrated at her refusal to try the foods she was served.

“Picky eating does have a lot to do with the presentation of foods (how they’re presented on a plate), and the texture (口感) of foods (is it a consistent texture),” Dial Said, “but there’s also fear of trying new foods and that might play into picky eating.” By learning more about picky eating in adults, the researchers said they may be able to determine how best to intervene (干预) before the problem becomes more severe for some people.

    32. What can best replace the underlined word “deficient” in paragraph 1?

    A. Limited. B. Low-fat. C. Balanced. D. High-fibre.

    33. What were the participants asked to do during the research?

    A. Record how often they eat out. B. Ignore what influences their eating.

    C. Express how picky eating affects them. D. Count how many kinds of foods they prefer.

    34. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3?

    A. By presenting data. B. By providing examples.

    C. By following time order. D. By making comparisons.

    35. What can be inferred about picky eating the last paragraph?

    A. It has something to do with family traditions.

    B. It can be easily cured by researchers.

    C. It often comes along with serious mental illnesses.

    D. It can have both physical and mental reasons.

When I was about six years old, my family and I went to Disneyland one weekend and had a wonderful day full of excitement. Little did I know that the real excitement wasn’t to begin until that night.

While we watched the fireworks, I began to get an urge to go to the restroom, but I didn’t want to miss the show. I overheard my sister Isabel talking to my mom, and I got closer to them to hear what they were talking about.

“Mom, I’m going to the bathroom with Lizette, okay?” said Isabel.

“Okay,” my mom replied, “but stay together. I don’t want any of you getting lost. ”

The second I saw my sisters leaving, I didn’t think twice before running after them—without telling my parents. As I followed them through the huge crowd of people, I started to lose sight of them. I began to panic as I scanned the crowd for them. Crazy thoughts ran through my head like “What if I never see my family again?”

I gave up trying to find my sisters and tried to get back to my family, but I was completely mixed up. After searching for what seemed like forever, I couldn’t hold back my tears, and I started crying like I had never cried before.

“Mommy!” I cried out. But everyone around me was too caught up by the fireworks to pay any attention to me.

I tried to stop the scary thoughts that were going through my head and started running as fast as I could...anywhere...everywhere. I was going crazy. I’m only six, and I’ve gotten lost. “What have I done? How could I have been so dumb to run off without telling anyone?” I thought.

With my face wet from tears, I kept running, pulling at people’s pants and crying, “Mommy!” I was hoping, wishing, that one of these adults would be one of my parents.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Luckily, I felt a pat on my shoulder and a gentle voice came, “Are you lost?”

Finally, through the crowd of people, I recognized a face.
