In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal shelter open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey’s own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski.

Every animal here is a rescue — abused, abandoned, disabled — and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. “We have 115 roosters,” she said.

In Zaleski’s eyes, Funny Farm is a perfect place, especially for animals. And it is the same with people. When you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here.

As she writes in her book Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals, “there are lessons here for our polarized, at-each-others-throat society, because the creatures on the Funny Farm live in harmony, no matter how different they are. It’s not quite the fairy tale of the lion lying down with the lamb, but as friendships go, this bond between Emily the emu(鸸鹋) and a goose named Airplane (because of her wounded wings) is pretty jaw-dropping.”

Zookeepers often place orphaned babies with mothers of another species who are nursing. And when animals meet when they’re young, anything is possible. Even with an animal that’s blind, another animal may kind of turn into a seeing-eye dog and protect that animal, and show where the food is, and just be the bodyguard, be the helper.

“I think you see this in cage so often, because these animals are taken care of, they’re not competing for food and they’re not stressed. And so, they have this luxury of being able to be social with other animals,” said Zaleski.

24What do we know about animals on the Funny Farm?

    AThey need help.

    BThey are retired.

    CThey are funny.

    DThey enjoy good health.

25How will a person feel when he enters Funny Farm?

    AAbsurd and strange.

    BPeaceful and harmonious.

    CConfident and proud.

    DStressed and sympathetic.

26What may have happened to Airplane?

    AShe saved a lamb.

    BShe dropped her jaws.

    CShe crashed herself.

    DShe had her wings hurt.

27How do animals on the Funny Farm get along?

    ABy fighting with each other.

    BBy competing for food.

    CBy socializing with each other.

DBy playing tricks on each other.

Yue-Sai Kan was born in 1946 in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, and grew up in Hong Kong. In 1968, while majoring in piano at the Hawaii campus of Brigham Young University, Kan entered a beauty contest sponsored by the local Chinese Chamber of Commerce. She won second place, and as a result got to travel around the world. The life-changing experience marked the beginning of her career in fashion, beauty, communication and cultural exchange.

In 1972, she moved to New York and created the weekly television series Looking East, the first of its kind to introduce Asian cultures and customs to a growing US audience. In 1986, Kan returned to China, producing and hosting the television series One World, which was the first show ever hosted by a Chinese-American on the television network, and was a national hit. Other important projects of hers include the ABC documentary China: Walls and Bridges, which initially explored different forms of spirituality in the country over the ages.

“I worked in China for almost 40 years, and I was there to witness and contribute to the country’s breakneck pace of change. This rare experience has given me a unique vision. As I say all the time, if I stay away from China for six months, I already miss so much of what is happening there! The Chinese saying “a year—small change, three years—big change has held true all this time,” Kan says.

Kan has never stopped doing what she loves. She is currently planning to do a 10-part television series exploring and highlighting the most interesting aspects of 10 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu. “I firmly believe that a TV series featuring these major Chinese cities is not only timely, but also necessary to educate, enlighten and entertain by showcasing the Chinese people as they live today. This will help dispel some of the misunderstandings about China in the world,” Kan says.

Throughout her life, Kan has also been deeply involved in charity. On Jan 26, she is planning to host a major charity event in San Francisco, in which she will honor 12 of the most outstanding Chinese-American women.

28What contributes most to starting Kan’s career?

AHer university major. BHer interest in travel.

CHer competition experience. DHer parents’ encouragement.

29Which feature do the contents of Kan’s TV projects have in common?

AThey are entertaining. BThey are critical.

CThey are adventurous. DThey are pioneering.

30What does Kan focus on about China in Para. 3?

AIts steady change. BIts huge challenges.

CIts great achievements. DIts fast development.

31Which of the following best describe Kan?

AGentle and considerate. BOptimistic and strict.

CGenerous and humorous. DAmbitious and kindhearted.

    D

Technology is developing by leaps and bounds. A small device such as a smartphone now has more processing power than rockets to the Moon once had. New tech brings many advantages, making our lives easier and opening up new opportunities. One piece of kit that’s been really taking off recently is the drone. This pilotless mini aircraft, originally developed for aerial (航空的) photography and warfare, is now bringing us benefits closer to home. In the last few years, tech companies such as Amazon, Alphabet and Uber have promised us delivery drones—bringing goods to our doorsteps in a matter of minutes. While progress in developing them has been slow, drones are becoming more and more involved in our life.

Drones are helping to connect with and enhance the lives of people in remote locations. In the UK, the Royal Mail wants a fleet of 500 drones to help deliver the mail to faraway communities. Windracers, the company developing the drones, say they can fly in fog and produce 30% fewer emissions than comparable piloted aircraft. And in Coventry in the UK, construction has started on an air center, which will act as a base for police and delivery drones. Urban-Air Port Limited is working with car-maker Hyundai on the mini-airport, known as a skyport.

Drones can also play a part in improving the health of millions of people. For example, an incredible development project by the University of South Australia is for drones to eventually be able to survey populations for disease by reading the blood oxygen levels of humans from the air. They’ll also be able to scan for other vital signs, like coughing and a high temperature.

It seems that the sky is the limit for what drone technology can achieve. The only thing that sometimes keeps it from working is regulation. Writing for the BBC, Jessica Brown says: “If our skies are to become as crowded as our streets, airspace rules need updating to prevent accidents.”

32What does the underlined sentence indicate?

AA smartphone is more advanced than rockets.

BThe rockets to the moon are very powerful.

    CTechnology is progressing very rapidly.

DTechnology is widely used in daily life.

33What do we know about drones according to the passage?

AThey were initially developed for bringing goods.

BThey’ve improved people’s life quality in remote areas.

CThey don’t cause any pollution to the environment.

DThey can diagnose and treat some diseases from the air.

    34What does Jessica Brown mean?

AThe development of drones is quite promising.

BIt’s a pity that drones are limited to the sky.

CDrones will be likely to cause some accidents.

DSome latest laws are needed to regulate drones.

35Which is the most suitable title for the passage?

ADrones Are Delivering Benefits Closer to Home

BDeveloping Drones Is Facing Many Challenges

CDrones Are Currently Booming in Every Field

DCompanies Are Competing to Develop Drones

    A Terrifying Experience

It was an unusually hot day. Exhausted after football practice, I headed to the bus stop to wait for Bus 112 which would take me home. I was beginning to drift off to sleep when I saw the bus arriving. The sun was in my eyes and that was probably the reason why I got onto Bus 113.

I was glad to get a seat. Within minutes, I was leaning against the window, fast asleep. When I opened my eyes, it was dark outside. I was the only passenger left on the bus. I could not recognize the part of town we were passing through. I pressed the bell and the bus stopped. I planned to hop across the road and catch a bus going in the opposite direction. However, I found myself on a quiet street with a row of shops that were all closed. I kicked myself for not asking the driver for directions.

As I was wondering what to do, a motorcycle came down the road. The rider looked at me as he passed and then stopped a short distance away. I went to him and asked him how to get back to Taman Klang Utama. He smiled and nodded. He patted the back seat and said that he would send me home. Without a second thought, I climbed up behind the rider. He turned the motorcycle around and headed in the direction I wanted. We traveled for about 15 minutes and the surroundings still looked unfamiliar to me. The rider made a few turns and I knew I was hopelessly lost. I asked him where we were going. He did not answer but increased his speed.

I jumped off the vehicle and fell onto the ground.
