On the day he almost died, Kimbal Musk had food on the brain. The Internet startup talent and restaurateur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This made Musk think a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry—but beyond expanding his farm-to-table movement along with his restaurant, Musk hadn’t yet broken the code. Then he went sailing down a snowy slope () and fell over, breaking his neck.

Musk eventually made a full recovery, but it involved spending two months on his back, which gave him plenty of time to come up with a plan. Since then, he has launched an initiative to put “learning gardens” in public schools across America; attracted Generation Z to the farming profession by changing shipping containers into high-tech, data-driven, year-round farms; and this year, is kicking off a new campaign to create one million at-home gardens.

Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people’s lives. “We were getting a lot of inquiries about gardening from people that had never gardened before,” says Musk. “People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to save money on groceries, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown.”

The program offers free garden kits that can be grown indoors or outdoors, and will be distributed through schools that Musk’s non-profit, Big Green, has already partnered with. It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons. “It’s not difficult. Anyone can do this, no matter where you come from, no matter where you live. We are all able to grow something,” says Musk.

24What inspired Musk to make a difference to food industry?

    AThe pandemic. BA skiing accident.

CJamie Oliver’s speech. DThe farm-to-table movement.

25What is a cause of people beginning gardening according to Musk?

ATo get access to healthy food.

    BTo make their house beautiful.

CTo make money by selling garden produce.

DTo build up their strength during the pandemic.

26What does the Million Gardens Movement focus on?

    AEncouraging people to preserve nature.

BProviding free food for low-income families.

    CPromoting “learning gardens” across schools.

DEducating new gardeners to grow their own food.

27Which of the following best describes Musk?

    ACharity-minded. BStubborn. CEasy-going. DScholarly.

    C

The world has faced a food crisis of unprecedented(前所未有的) proportions in 2022—the largest in modern history, as conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis and rising costs have combined to pose great risks for hungry people across the world. As many as 828 million people go to bed hungry every night. The number of those facing acute food insecurity has risen from 135 million to 345 million since 2019. A total of 49 million people in 49 countries are suffering hunger, according to figures from the United Nations’ World Food Programme.

“We are facing an unprecedented global food crisis and all signs suggest we have not yet seen the worst. For the last three years, hunger numbers have repeatedly hit new peaks,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley said. He warned that things can and will get worse unless there is a large-scale and coordinated(协调一致的) effort to address the causes of this crisis.

There are many reasons for prevailing high levels of food insecurity. These reasons include conflicts, climate changes and weather extremes, economic slowdowns and downturns. In addition, these drivers often do not act alone. For instance, conflicts are often accompanied by economic downturns, which affect livelihoods and the ability of people to earn resources, leading to increasing poverty levels and higher prevalence(流行) of food insecurity.

Unfortunately, the main reasons for high levels of food insecurity have not improved this year. People in the Horn of Africa are facing a fifth consecutive(连续的) failed rain season in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, which will constrain their production, and is likely to push many people deeper into food insecurity.

Moreover, there is uncertainty about the weather. And climatic shock affecting any major producer or exporter will introduce additional uncertainty into production and consequently prices, which in turn impact the ability to purchase food, particularly of the most vulnerable people.

28How does the author lead in the topic?

ABy making a comparison. BBy sharing personal experience.

CBy giving opinions with evidence. DBy listing facts and accurate figures.

29What can we know from David Beasley’s words?

AThis global food crisis won’t last longer.

BIt’s certain that the global food crisis will get worse.

CWe need to work together to deal with the global food crisis.

DThere will be another new peak of hunger numbers in three years.

30What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?

    ACharacters. BOperators. CFactors. DActivities.

31What is the best title for the passage?

AThe Issue of Food Safety BThe Unprecedented Food Crisis

CConflicts Causing Food Shortage DEfforts Put into the Study of Food Insecurity

Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.

Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered (过滤的) Photographs. The article analysed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article reads.

In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous people. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.

“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror. It’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”

32Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably _________.

Ahave an operating to make our eyes look bigger

Buse some cream to smooth our skin

Cuse an app to fix our photo

    Dedit our perfections away

33What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

AIn many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.

BPhoto editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxieties about their appearance.

CPhoto editing apps can make people more beautiful.

DPhoto editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.

34When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble?

ABecause they compare their looks to those of famous people.

BBecause beauty standards are set by social media.

CBecause their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.

DBecause their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.

35According to Engeln, what should we do?

AWe should feel good about what we actually look like.

BWe should spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self.

CWe should take a mirror with us everywhere.

DWe should try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos.

A multiyear study examines the possibility of yoga maintaining weight loss. Its findings suggest that yoga may help to improve long-term weight loss outcomes via improvements in distress tolerance, self-compassion and a more positive mood.

Yoga is a very reasonable form of exercise, but you have to choose the right type. A 2021 study found no difference in weight loss totals for participants practicing a gentle, restorative yoga versus a more vigorous type of yoga. ____40____ Everybody can benefit from a yoga practice.

Have you ever accepted others’ help? Do you remember him or her? You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone. Sometimes you may think your help is so small, but as a matter of fact, what you do is of vital significance to others.

When young, I worked as an English teacher in a university. During the summer vacation, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school leadership camp by a college. Having been highly involved in many campus activities, I jumped at the opportunity.

About an hour into the first day of camp, immersed (沉浸于) in communications and interactions, I noticed the boy in black for the first time. Small and skinny, the boy was seated alone, staring into space and his obvious discomfort and shyness made him appear fragile. The desperate loneliness he revealed almost stopped me from approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from the senior staff- to stay alert for campers who might fall left out.

I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole surroundings appeared foreign to him. But I somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to push him, either. That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my concerns about him, I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and asked them to pay special attention and spend time with him when they could. In the meantime, it struck me that I should do what I could to give him a hand. I argued that he needed a friend, one who could share happiness and sorrow with him. I hoped to be his friend, his real friend to help him go through the challenging period.

    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
