Are you a bookworm? Is your head permanently stuck in a book? If so, that’s a good thing. There are many benefits to reading. Getting into a good novel improves our literacy. But who or what encourages us to pick up a book and start reading?
Of course, when we are young, our parents and teachers inspire us by introducing us to characters that we love or love to hate. And there are the authors—the people who invent and write about these characters. Good writing can really capture our imagination. As a child, I loved books written by Roald Dahl, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Twits. These fictional stories were funny, mysterious, and slightly adventurous. These books are popular with children even today, despite competition from contemporary authors.
One modern-day children’s author is J. K. Rowling, who’s known for her books about the wizard, Harry Potter. Last year she was named as a “literacy hero” for her part in improving people’s love of reading. The UK’s National Literacy Trust awarded her the title for “turning a generation of children into readers”.
The Trust also honoured schoolchildren, a librarian and teachers for their effort in trying to get people to read. The actor, Henry Winkler, who has dyslexia, was also named for the books he has written about a boy with learning difficulties.
Reading books is more than an enjoyable pastime; it can also help people in difficult circumstances. The author Pat Winslow worked as a writer in prisons and found reading and discus- sing stories helped prisoners reflect on their patterns of behaviour. She says, “Very often we would have discussions about the moral compass of a character, what was the motivation of somebody, why did they behave that way?”
Today I tend to read factual books such as biographies, where you get an insight into the lives of important and well-known people. I also enjoy looking at travel books and learning about journeys and new destinations. It’s a good substitute if you can’t visit in person.
But the main benefit of reading is to improve our literacy. The more we do it, the better we get and who knows—one day you may become the next Tolstoy, Jackie Collins or even William Shakespeare.
1.How are we encouraged to read when we are young?
    ________________
2.Why was J K. Rowling awarded by the UK’s National Literacy Trust?
    ________________
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
In the face of the competition from contemporary authors, the stories the author read when he was young are not so widely enjoyed by young readers as they used to be.

4.Besides the ones mentioned in the passage, what else do you think can reading benefit us? (In about 40 words)

A spoonful of pickles (榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste way better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It refers to the videos people watch while eating. Many people think that the videos can make their food more appetizing.
The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people participated in the discussion. Instead of having meals with friends and family members, many young people in China are kept company by TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the “digital pickles”.
Can this habit affect your diet? According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more unconsciously. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating patterns on four different days. The patterns included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction. After analyzing their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric ingestion (卡路里摄入) by about 15 percent.
To explore the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to an audio clip (音频剪辑) about another person eating and the other listened to a clip that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When we eat with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
This works not only for eating meals but other demanding tasks as well. A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which require lots of attention trick many participants into overeating. The team invited 120 participants to do various tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study suggests that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a highly engaging task, you’re less likely to be able to tell how full you feel,” one of the authors Martin Yeomans explained.
    5.What is “digital pickled vegetables”?
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
6.How will eating while watching videos affect people’s diet?
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
7.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
ØPeople overeat when doing demanding tasks because they need their food to distract and comfort them.

8.Online videos can make us overeat, which is their disadvantage. Can you think of two benefits they can bring to you? (In about 40 words)

As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury (奢侈的) goods has become a fall-scale war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

But while he was thinking this, his feet were taking him, step by step, closer and closer to the dot in the distance, which in the meantime had become a speck, and then began to show every sign of turning into a blob. And shortly after that the blob became a figure. And then, as Bruno got even closer, he saw that the thing was neither a dot nor a speck nor a blob nor a figure, but a person.
In fact it was a boy.
    “Hello,” said Bruno.
    “Hello,” said the boy.
Bruno was sure that he had never seen a skinnier or sadder boy in his life but decided that he had better talk to him.
    “I've been exploring,” he said.
“Have you?” said the little boy.
“Yes. For almost two hours now.”
This was not strictly speaking true. Bruno had been exploring for just over an hour but he didn't think that exaggerating slightly would be too bad a thing to do. It wasn't quite the same thing as lying and made him seem more adventurous than he really was.
“Have you found anything?” asked the boy.
    “Very little.”
    “Nothing at all?”
“Well, I found you,” said Bruno after a moment.
He sat down on the ground on his side of the fence and crossed his legs like the little boy and wished that he had brought some chocolate with him or perhaps a pastry that they could share.
“I'm Shmuel,” said the little boy.
Bruno scrunched up his face, not sure that he had heard the little boy right. “What did you say your name was?” he asked.
“Shmuel,” said the little boy as if it was the most natural thing in the world. “What did you say your name was?”
    “Bruno,” said Bruno.
“I've never heard of that name,” said Shmuel.
“And I've never heard of your name,” said Bruno. “Shmuel.” He thought about it. “Shmuel,” he repeated. “I like the way it sounds when I say it. Shmuel. It sounds like the wind blowing.”
“Bruno,” said Shmuel, nodding his head happily. “Yes, I think I like your name too. It sounds like someone who's rubbing their arms to keep warm.”
“How old are you?” he asked.
Shmuel thought about it and looked down at his fingers and they wiggled in the air, as if he was trying to count. “I'm nine,” he said. “My birthday is April the fifteenth nineteen thirty-four.”
Bruno stared at him in surprise. “What did you say?” he asked.
“I said my birthday is April the fifteenth nineteen thirty-four.”
Bruno's eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O. “I don't believe it,” he said.
    “Why not?” asked Shmuel.
“No,” said Bruno, shaking his head quickly. “I don't mean I don't believe you. I mean I'm surprised, that's all. Because my birthday is April the fifteenth too. And I was born in nineteen thirty-four. We were born on the same day?”
Shmuel thought about this. “So you're nine too,” he said.
    “Yes. Isn't that strange?”
    “Very strange,” said Shmuel.
    “We're like twins,” said Bruno.
“A little bit,” agreed Shmuel. “Where did you come from?” asked Shmuel, narrowing his eyes and looking at Bruno curiously.
    “Berlin.”
    “Where's that?”
Bruno opened his mouth to answer but found that he wasn't entirely sure. “It's in Germany, of course,” he said.
    “Don't you come from Germany?”
“No, I'm from Poland,” said Shmuel.
Bruno frowned. “Then why do you speak German?” he asked.
“Because you said hello in German. So I answered in German. Can you speak Polish?”
“No,” said Bruno, laughing nervously. “I don't know anyone who can speak two languages. And especially no one of our age.”
“Mama is a teacher in my school and she taught me German,” explained Shmuel. “She speaks French too. And Italian. And English. She's very clever. I don't speak French or Italian yet, but she said she'd teach me English one day because I might need to know it.”
14.Why did Bruno lie to Shmuel about the time he had been exploring?

Do you scan yourself in your early 20s already dressed in a smart suit as well as using a company phone? Currently more and more young people have been looking for internships (实习生职位) rather than Saturday jobs. But should people be expected to do a proper job at all while they’re still young?
For many, weekend or evening work is a rite of passage that may involve cleaning toilets, milking cows or operating the machine that puts jam into a doughnut.
Plentiful teenagers or students aren’t impressive in holding down a part-time job. But it’s a opportunity to try to experience the world of work and take a crucial first step into adulthood.
But the number of young people doing a Saturday job has decreased by a half in 15 years, according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. It’s economic downturn that has kept it rough for young people to find any kind of job. And many enterprises put forward higher requirement, which are associated with this phenomenon as well. For those seeking a career, there is now greater pressure to choose professional jobs and get work experience.
Those who go on to successful careers often mention their days of waiting tables or picking fruit as experiences of growth. Actor Sean Connery may have the 007 role as a protuberance on his CV while he embarked on working as a milkman when only 14. George Clooney once strove for selling women’s shoes.
What is a proper job? White collar work is a golden job that a host of people want to obtain and professionals in finance, advertising, journalism and the law often work exceedingly long hours. However, there is a sense that sitting at a desk all one’s life is not always real work in the same way as some other jobs are.
Dr Paul Sissons, senior researcher at the Work Foundation, argues that the solid choice to realised occupation triumph could be getting eminent grades. He says that formal qualifications still influence employers’ decision.

The term “moonlight clan” refers to low-income earners in China who spend all of their income meeting their basic needs. According to CCTV in 2021, 40 percent of singles in China’s first-tier cities belong to the “moonlight clan.” On the other hand, the Chinese household savings rate remains high. The average savings rate in China is over 45 percent. In other words, nearly half of a household’s income does not flow back into the economy but sits in a bank account (or somewhere else).
Some experts are concerned about this high rate because of limited capital flows and a less active currency. But considering current economic situation in China, the high savings rate is a good thing.
To cope with pressure, the Chinese government has introduced a series of policies to stimulate residents’ consumption, such as encouraging the purchase of vehicles in the countryside and providing consumption vouchers(消费券). High savings rates are undoubtedly an important support for these policies because without actual money in the bank, no matter how encouraging the policies are, the public just won’t shop.
Despite a still very active market, China needs more effective measures to persuade more people to start spending again and stimulate the economy. And once more people feel like spending freely again, China’s domestic market will surely grow stronger, promising sound economic growth in the long term.
23.According to the passage, what does the term “moonlight clan” refer to?

Did you ever wonder where Legos come from? A box? A toy store? A factory? Yes. But where did they first come from? Who invented them? What was that person’s story? When you learn about the Lego story, you will be surprised!
Like many great inventions, the story is not just one of the great ideas, but of a ton of hard work, perseverance and courage. The story starts off in Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter who was struggling with his business. Then his wife, the mother of his 4 boys, died. This was very hard for everyone. He was looking for new ways to make money and to make his kids happy.
So, he started making wood toys. They were of great quality. His 4 sons helped him with his business and, soon, word spread and big orders started coming in. But then the toys did not sell very well. He decided his toys needed a new name. He chose the name “Lego”, which in Danish means “play well”.
Then, a few years later, his workshop was burned to the ground. Everything was destroyed. Ole almost gave up. But he decided it was very important to support his employees and kids.
Not long after, he started to make a few plastic toys. He then got the idea to create a ‘system’ of toys that would build kids’ imagination and creativity. He built a village to test the idea. And the idea caught on quick! Soon sales were pouring in. Then they figured out how to connect the pieces to each other. Soon they decided to stop making wood toys and focus only on the connected plastic toys.
Then they started to build more and more kinds of models. Each one had to be of the highest quality. Lego’s motto is “only the best is good enough.”
Thanks to the perseverance of Ole and his sons, kids around the world can enjoy Lego toys, movies, amusement parks, clothing and much more.

Is it better for our bodies to work out at certain times of the day? Scientists have known for some time that every tissue in our bodies contains a kind of biological clock that goes off in response to messages related to our daily exposure to light, food and sleep.
However, whether and how exercise timing might influence metabolic(新陈代谢的)health has been less clear, and the results of past experiments have not always agreed. A much-discussed 2019 study found that men with Type 2 diabetes(糖尿病)who completed a few minutes of high-intensity interval(间隔)sessions in the afternoon improved their blood-sugar control after two weeks. Patrick Schrauwen, a professor of nutrition and movement sciences read that 2019 study with interest. He had been studying exercise in people with Type 2 diabetes, but had not considered the possible role of timing. Now, seeing the varying impacts of the intense workouts, he wondered if the timing of workouts might similarly affect people’s metabolisms.
Incidentally, he and his colleagues had a ready-made source of data in their own prior experiment. Several years earlier, they had asked adult men at high risk for Type 2 diabetes to ride stationary bicycles at the lab three times a week for 12 weeks, while the researchers tracked their metabolic health. They also had noted when the riders showed up for their workouts. The researchers pulled data for the 12 men who consistently had worked out between 8 and 10 a.m. and compared them with another 20 who always exercised between 3 and 6 p.m. They found that the benefits of afternoon workouts far outweighed those of morning exercise.
He says, “This study does suggest that afternoon exercise may be more beneficial for people with disturbed metabolisms than the same exercise done earlier. The particular and most effective exercise for each of us will line up with our daily routines and exercise tendencies because exercise is good for us at any time of day — but only if we choose to keep doing it.”
32.What inspired Professor Schrauwen to consider the role of exercise timing in metabolic health?

Middle school is a fun time for young teens. You meet new people and go to parties. But many teenagers notice their grades descending in middle school. Classes get harder and it is tougher to keep up. Besides, going to parties takes up a lot of time. The following are some tips on how to improve your grades in middle school.
★Talk to your parents and see how they can help. Ask them for little things, like keeping the TV off for an hour while you study and do homework, or keeping you on task by checking once in a while to make sure you aren’t playing computer games. Parents have gone through school and they can help.
★Seek teachers’ advice as well. They have taught hundreds of students and know many different approaches to learning. See if they can meet with you twice a week after school to help you find out the best way for you to learn.
★Ask for extra homework. If your grade is becoming lower and you need a quick improvement, see if the teacher can give you any extra homework for you to do at home.
★Practice makes perfect. Do your homework every night. If you don’t have homework, review what you have learned for at least 10 minutes. If you are struggling in a class and the teacher doesn’t give homework often, consider asking some questions from the book once in a while to review. Sure, other students will think you are crazy, but if it helps, it doesn’t matter. If the problem lies beyond something you can control, such as a learning disability or problems at home, ask help from a teacher or parent.
★Have your own study area where you can study without being distracted. This study area should also improve your motivation of learning, so decorate it with things that will help you stay organized and not with things that will distract you.

We are all faced with challenges in our lives. Most people have a hard time accepting and dealing with them. The truth is that you will have to deal with difficult problems throughout your life. Here are some tips on how to deal with everyday challenges.
    1. Don’t compare your lifestyle with others. It is really difficult not to compare ourselves with others; however, the more often we do that, the more dissatisfied we will feel. There will be people that may have accomplished more than you. The key thing to remember is that you create your own story and success in life.
    2. Don’t blame others. Many people make a habit of blaming others for all their problems. They fail to take full responsibility for the decisions they have made in life. The more you blame others for the challenges you are faced with, the more you will make people dislike you and not want to be around you. The first thing you want to do when faced with a personal challenge is not to start pointing fingers at others.
    3. Accept changes in your life. You will have to deal with changes in life all the time. Many people don’t like change because it gets them outside of their comfort zone. You may be unhappy or happy at certain times; however, you have to realize that those two feelings will not last forever. You have to always train your mind to be at peace despite the emotional state you are experiencing.
    4. Don’t think too much. When you think too much about an event that happened, you will start to judge everything and everyone. When you think too much, you will have a very hard time accepting reality and you will think that something is not right. Thinking too much can also lead you not to take action on your goal. This can make you really sad in the long run.
Life is full of its ups and downs. With the right mindset and practice, you will be able to overcome them every time and grow in the process!
41.What is the key thing to remember if you want to stop comparing your lifestyle with others?

When I was a boy growing up, I could not once ever remember either my mom or my grandmother wasting food. Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was saved, stored, and served as leftovers (剩饭剩菜) later on. I can remember my grandmother making a huge pot of brown beans with a large cake of cornbread. We would all eat until we were stuffed but there was always about half of the beans left over. A few days later my grandmother would take those beans out of the refrigerator, boil pasta, add parsley and mix them all together into her delicious Pasta Fasule. And I also remember when I watched my mom fry bacon for us in the mornings, she would always take the grease (油脂) and carefully pour it into a container. Then she later would use it to flavor up so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that green beans didn’t actually taste like bacon.
I learned their lessons well and after I grew up I tried never to waste food by myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so nothing went to waste. Every meal went into my stomach and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, or my dogs. To me throwing food in the trash was just wrong. All the work it took to grow it, harvest it, and prepare it needed to be honored, not wasted.
I learned something else over the years, however: when it comes to living there are no leftovers. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved. Life cannot be stored. Life has to be lived, TODAY!
Live each moment of your life to the fullest then. Make every day a feast of love with no leftovers. Leo Buscaglia once said: “Each day is a fresh beginning, a little life unto itself.” Don’t let any of these little lives go to waste. Live your life with a full belly and a full heart.

The Impact of Social Media on Adolescents (青少年)
Using social media has become a routine activity for most young people. In recent years the number of young people using social media has increased dramatically, so a large part of their social and emotional development is occurring while they are on the Internet.
Social media allow young people to achieve many of the online tasks that are important to them offline: staying connected with friends and family, making new friends, and exchanging ideas. Some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which has the benefit of improving skills in written expression and creativity. At the same time, social media helps them get what they want, increase their knowledge and confidence in their academic (学业的) performance.
While social media provides many benefits, it can also have a negative impact on young people, both physically and mentally. It is easy to become addicted, and research shows that students who spend too much time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression, anxiety and more. Research also indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviours, which have introduced problems such as cyberbullying and online harassment (骚扰).
Using social media becomes a risk to adolescents more than they can realise. When people go on to websites, they leave evidence of their visits. This ongoing record of online activity is called the “digital footprint”. One of the biggest threats to young people on social media is to their digital footprint and future reputations (名誉). Young people who lack an awareness of privacy issues often post inappropriate material without understanding that “what goes online stays online”. As a result, future jobs and college acceptance maybe put in danger by inexperienced clicks of the mouse.

Why are so many people afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure can play a role as an experience that will lead to growth in our lives. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. The trouble with failure-prevention methods is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. Actually, the young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when we don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honor roll on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents shouldn’t of fer a quick comfort, prize or say. It doesn’t matter because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment一and be helped to master it.
Failure is never pleasant. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Even a failure that seems total can stimulate(促进) fresh thinking or a change of direction.
After 12 years of studying ballet, a friend of mine went for a professional company. She was turned down. “Would further training help?” she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “You will never be a dancer”, he said, “You haven’t the body for it.”
In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock of(估量) the situation courageously, asking, “What have I left? What else can I do?”My friend put away her toe shoes and moved into dance therapy, a field where she’s both able and useful. Failure frees one to take risks because there less to lose. Often there is recovery of energy—a way to find new possibilities.

I had a great interest in researching the topic of how to improve your sense of direction, because my own sense of direction is absolutely terrible. Take going to the toilet in a restaurant, for example. I can find my way there easily enough because there are signs pointing me in the right direction. But getting back to my table is another story. After all, there are no helpful signs saying, “This is where you were sitting less than five minutes ago”.
However, rather than accept the situation of myself frequently walking into cupboards and backtracking down dead ends, I’m determined to give my sense of direction a much-needed improvement.
Nowadays, of course, it’s easy to rely on GPS (全球卫星定位系统)to find your way. But if you really want to improve your sense of direction, it’s a good idea to count on yourself.
Studying a map and memorizing the way before you set out does have its benefits—not least because the amount of mental energy it requires means it’s more likely to stick in your mind. Looking at electronic maps on a big screen—or even studying a paper map—also allows you to get a sense of that all-important bigger picture and how everywhere fits together.
Paying full attention is key, too. It’s important to notice what’s around you—in all directions. Instead of staring straight ahead, make sure you look up, down and behind you as well. This will come in particularly useful when you’re on the return journey—even if it’s just finding your way back from the toilet in a restaurant.
Try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground. It’s all too easy to be anxious and afraid if you imagine you may be lost—but this sudden feeling of anxiety will only prevent you from calmly working out which way to go. Besides, getting lost is one of the best ways to discover new places and add more detail to that ever-growing mental map—both of which will help you become “direction smarter” in the long term.
Finally, your sense of direction is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. If you only stick to the ways you already know, it’s never going to get any better. So now’s the time to start exploring!

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if I had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever — but not me… I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn’t understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn’t pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn’t want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, “The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time.”
I think they were indulging(沉溺) in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don’t realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn’t due to some miraculous(不可思议的) event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.

    Self-reflection
Do you ever feel like you are running from one activity to another? When things happen at such a fast pace, it is easy to lose sight of what you are doing, or what you are learning. It is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you have been doing or learning.
Self-reflection means stopping the mad rush of activity and calming yourself and your mind so your brain can evaluate the input it has already received. Some people prefer to do their self-reflection mentally, while others keep a journal of written notes of some kind. Either method can work depending on your own personal style.
School textbooks are often divided into chapters and units of study. This can make it easier for someone who wants to begin the process of self-reflection. Watch for times when you complete a unit of study in any of the subjects you are learning: math, social studies, science, art, or any other topic in your school. Sometimes you are reminded that a unit is over because there is some kind of test or quiz. Use these breaks as a chance to stop and reflect.
Find a quiet place. This can even be sitting at your desk at school when you finish something early and other students are still working. If you are going to take notes, take out paper or your reflection journal. Jot down(记下)some notes on things that you learned in this unit that you did not know before you began.
Sometimes just pausing to think deeply allows your brain to make connections so that new information can be quickly retrieved(检索)when you need it again. Next, think about things that you still want to know. For example, maybe you learned a new way to solve a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to continue seeking answers the next time you are exposed to the same topic. Self-reflection is an essential skill for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to reflect, try it now.

    Never give up on hope
Oct 31, 2013 wasn’t just another Halloween for me. While I was driving home, a vehicle struck my car from behind, sending me into the busy road. I fought hard to open my eyes for a second, but I lost my consciousness.
After I was taken to hospital, the doctor told me I wouldn’t be able to move anything from my neck down. I had lost the use of almost every muscle and was very weak. I then realized that I had to say goodbye to my dream of entering NBA.
But at the rehab center (康复中心), I saw a glimpse of hope and was inspired by other patients with injuries like mine. The first year was slow and I didn’t see much progress. My head felt like a heavy ball, and I couldn’t hold it up, and my blood pressure would drop all the time. And while I didn’t have a ghost of a chance to walk or even stand, I did try. Six month later, I finally returned home.
However, that’s when the reality of the situation became clear to me. I realized that my life was so different. I was unable to use a phone, and unable to feed or wash myself. I couldn’t hold on to anything; a fork or spoon was too heavy to pick up. I had to learn to be patient with myself, and to enjoy every moment going forward.
I was determined to walk again, so giving up was no longer a choice. I fought hard on my recovery and still do to this day. I’m now moving my legs and arms on my own, doing things like working out, swimming and yoga. All of this is proving my doctors wrong, and is turning the page from the impossible to the possible. My supportive family, friends and team encourage me to continue to work harder.
I believe that this difficulty is an opportunity to grow, become stronger and keep on fighting to hopefully inspire myself not to give up.

The other day I was having coffee and catching up with Brian, a friend I hadn’t seen in over a year, when he asked me this question: “Do you regret leaving Google?” “Of course, I don’t regret it,” I answered. But when I reflected more deeply on his question, I arrived at this realization: We cannot regret something that has taught us valuable lessons in life.
Truth is, not every decision we make will be the right choice for us. I learned later that quitting my one and only source of income to start an e-commerce business from nothing was a recipe for financial disaster. No, that decision was not the right one at the time. Perhaps I should’ve followed the advice I give today: Build your business while working a full-time job so that you can work from a place of stability. But then again, I wouldn’t have learned such a valuable lesson had I not acted upon what was truly important to me at the time—the freedom of pursuing my own dream, on my own terms.
We regret what’s in the past and can’t be changed. We compare the choices we made yesterday to an ideal path that we think we should have taken—we simply imagine it to be a better path. What is worse is when stuck in regret, we lose our control over what matters most: What we do with our time, today.
There’s a much better way to look at regret—a more mindful way—and it can be seen at a place where action, reflection, and gratitude meet.
So whenever you find yourself caught in regret, stop and ask yourself these two questions: “What have I learned from this? And how have I grown because of it?” Perhaps you might just shift your viewpoint from that of being upset and regretful to being appreciative and grateful.
81.What did Brian’s question make the writer realize?

    Should We Fear Maths?
How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of it or enjoy working out number games. Maths is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal, to making your household bills clear. But many feel afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel a real sense of worry and disorder. It can seem fearful, but this “maths fear” is perfectly common, and you’re definitely not alone. You need to know our worries and fears don’t necessarily show our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their fear to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be influenced. The Programme for International Student Assessment (评估) found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they felt uneasy doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they were worried that maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC she believes giving students, particularly girls, good role models is important, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people who love teaching maths, especially women, to help younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says, ”It’s not clear why maths brings so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more worried about underperforming (表现不佳).” And once we think we’re not a “maths person”, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
The fear on maths may appear due to many reasons, but some suggest that we encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat (威胁). That means we need to think of the good sides of maths.

The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.(然而,我们高兴地看到全球努力保护日益减少的鲨鱼数量。 Because the world has realized that we need sharks to keep a balanced ecosystem.
10.考查细节理解。根据第三段中的“The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins.(几十年来,对鱼翅的需求一直在上升,威胁着鲨鱼的灭绝——每年仅为了鱼翅就杀死多达 1 亿条鲨鱼。)”可知,人们对鲨鱼翅的需求在日益增长,所以猎杀鲨鱼主要是为了得到鲨鱼翅。故答案是People kill sharks just for their fins.
11.考查细节理解。根据第四段中的“In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.(在加利福尼亚州,通过野生援助组织和其他组织的努力,禁止销售和拥有鱼翅汤的禁令已于今年生效。)”可知,在Wild Aid and other organizations的努力下,禁止销售和持有鱼翅汤的禁令开始生效。故答案是Wild Aid and other organizations.

13.开放型题目。根据文章最后一段中的“Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.(美国与国际伙伴一道,正在领导全世界减少对依赖杀害动物的高端产品的需求的努力。)”可知,减少对高端产品的需求可以减少对野生动物的杀害,所以,在我看来禁止野生动物产品的买卖是最好的组织猎杀野生动物的方法。故答案是In my opinion, stopping selling and purchasing the animal products is the best way to stop killing animals.

65.考查词句猜测。根据最后一段“If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat. (如果你想成名,成名就要付出代价,下面是你如何开始为此付出代价的……汗水。)”可知,这句话想表达的意思是:要想成功就需要努力。故答案为You have to work hard in order to succeed.
66.开放性试题。根据“In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard. (在节目中,舞蹈老师告诉她的学生,“如果你想成名,成名就要付出代价,这就是你如何开始付出代价……挥汗如雨。”每次我们观看节目时,我父亲都会自豪地说,老师是多么正确,因为为了成功,你必须努力工作。)”可知,这篇文章作者想要表达的中心就是:想要成功,就必须努力。所以给出的答案要围绕这个中心展开。故答案为Yes, because working hard makes us successful and it’s hard working, rather than intelligence, that matters.

Because Chinese economy is booming, from which foreigners can profit.
69.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“As the world is crazy about Chinese, more and more foreigners have interest in our language and culture.(随着世界掀起一股汉语热,越来越多的外国人对我们的语言和文化产生了兴趣)”可知,越来越多的外国人对中国文化和汉语产生了浓厚的兴趣,故答案为Chinese language and culture.
70.考查词句猜测。根据文章第四段“because it is so hard to learn.(因为汉语真的很难)”和“Some foreigners not only speak mandarin well, but also know much about Chinese culture.(一些外国人不仅普通话说得好,而且对中国文化也很了解)”可知,我们对一些外国人能够流利地讲中文,并且通晓中国文化感到非常钦佩,毕竟汉语很难。
Confucius Institute will remain a bridge which can not only facilitate multicultural exchange, but presents the beauty of Chinese culture.

72.考查细节理解。根据第二段第一句“Self-reflection means stopping the mad rush of activity and calming yourself and your mind so your brain can evaluate the input it has already received.(自我反省意味着停止疯狂的活动,让自己和头脑冷静下来,这样你的大脑就可以评估它已经收到的输入。)”可知,自我反省就是让你自己和你的心灵平静下来,这样你就能评估大脑接收到的信息。故答案为Self-reflection is calming yourself and your mind so that you can evaluate what your brain has received.
73.考查细节理解。根据第三段最后两句“Sometimes you are reminded that a unit is over because there is some kind of test or quiz. Use these breaks as a chance to stop and reflect.(有时你会被提醒一个单元结束了,因为有一些测试或小测验。利用这些休息时间停下来反思。)”可知,每个单元或章节结束的时候就是一个好的反思时间。故答案为A good time for self-reflection is at the end of a chapter or unit of study.
74.考查细节理解。根据第四段最后一句“Jot down some notes on things that you learned in this unit that you did not know before you began.(记下一些你在本单元中学到但在开始学习之前不知道的东西。)”可知,我们在反思时应该记下我们在本单元中学到,但在开始学习之前不知道的东西。故答案为Things that we learned in a unit that we did not know before we began.
75.考查开放性试题。结合全文内容, 符合逻辑即可。比如根据文章第三段前两句“School textbooks are often divided into chapters and units of study. This can make it easier for someone who wants to begin the process of self-reflection.(学校的教科书通常分为章节和学习单元。这可以让那些想要开始自我反思的人更容易。)”可知,对学生来说,反思可以帮助学生复习并更充分地理解所学的知识。故答案为Self-reflection can help students by allowing them to review and more fully understand what they have learned.

I fought hard to open my eyes for a second, but I lost my consciousness.(当我开车回家时,一辆车从后面撞上了我的车,把我送到了繁忙的道路上。我挣扎着睁开眼睛,但我失去了意识)”和第二段的“After I was taken to hospital, the doctor told me I wouldn’t be able to move anything from my neck down.(我被送到医院后,医生告诉我脖子以下的任何部位都无法移动)”可知,作者被送到医院是因为他被车撞了。故答案为:Because he was struck / hit by a vehicle.
77.考查细节理解。根据第二段的“I then realized that I had to say goodbye to my dream of entering NBA.(然后我意识到我不得不和我进入NBA的梦想说再见)”可知,作者遭遇事故前的梦想是进入NBA。故答案为:To become a basketball player. / To enter NBA. / To play basketball in NBA.
78.考查词句猜测。根据第三段的“The first year was slow and I didn’t see much progress. My head felt like a heavy ball, and I couldn’t hold it up, and my blood pressure would drop all the time. (第一年进展缓慢,我没有看到太多进展。我的头感觉像一个沉重的球,我撑不住,我的血压会一直下降)”可知,作者接受康复治疗的第一年身体恢复得很慢。由此猜测划线句子意为“对我来说走路甚至站立都是不可能的”。故答案为:It is impossible/unlikely for me to walk or even stand./Walking or even standing was impossible for me.
79.考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段的“My supportive family, friends and team encourage me to continue to work harder.(支持我的家人、朋友和团队都鼓励我继续努力恢复)”可知,作者的家人、朋友和团队鼓励他继续努力恢复。故答案为:His family, friends, and team.

82.考查细节理解。根据文章最后一句“So whenever you find yourself caught in regret, stop and ask yourself these two questions: “What have I learned from this? And how have I grown because of it?” Perhaps you might just shift your viewpoint from that of being upset and regretful to being appreciative and grateful. ( 所以,当你发现自己陷入后悔之中时,停下来问问自己这两个问题:“我从这件事中学到了什么?我是如何因此而成长的呢?”也许你可以把你的观点从沮丧和遗憾转变为感激和感激。也许你可以把你的观点从沮丧和遗憾转变为感激和感恩。)”可知作者用来描述人们在面对后悔时应该采取的观点的两个词是appreciative和grateful。故答案为Appreciative and grateful。
83.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“What is worse is when stuck in regret, we lose our control over what matters most: What we do with our time, today.(更糟糕的是,当陷入后悔之中时,我们会失去对最重要的事情的控制:我们今天如何利用我们的时间。) ”可知“When people get stuck in regret, what makes the situation worse is that past choices can’t be changed. (当人们陷入悔恨时,更糟糕的是过去的选择无法改变。)”这句话是错误的,当人们陷入悔恨时,更糟糕的不是过去的选择无法改变。而是我们会失去对最重要的事情的控制:我们今天如何利用我们的时间。故答案为When people get stuck in regret, what makes the situation worse is that past choices can’t be changed. Reason: When people get stuck in regret, what makes the situation worse is that we lose our control over what matters most: What we do with our time, today.
