Five r six years ag, I attended a lecture n the science f attentin. A prfessr wh cnducts research ver in the medical schl was talking abut attentin blindness, the basic feature f the human brain that, when we cncentrate n ne task, causes us t miss just abut everything else. Because we can't see what we can't see, ur lecturer was determined t catch us in the act. He had us watch a vide f six peple tssing(投掷) basketballs back and frth, three in white shirts and three in black, and ur task was t keep track nly f the tsses amng the peple in white. The tape rlled, and everyne began cunting.
Everyne except me. I'm dyslexic(患阅读困难症的), and the mment I saw that tape with the cnfusing basketball tssers, I knew I wuldn't be able t keep track f their mvements, s I let my mind wander. I became curius, thugh, when abut 30 secnds int the tape, a grilla(大猩猩) walked in amng the players. I raised my hand and was surprised t discver I was the nly persn at my table and ne f nly three r fur in the large rm t d s. He'd set us up, trapping us in ur wn attentin blindness. Yes, there had been a trick, but he wasn't the ne wh had played it n us. By cncentrating s hard n cunting, we had managed t miss the grilla in the midst.
Attentin blindness is the fundamental rganising principle f the brain, and I believe that it presents us with a great pprtunity. My take is different frm that f many neurscientists: Where they see the shrtcmings f the individual, I sense an pprtunity fr cperatin. Frtunately, given the interactive(互动的) nature f mst f ur lives in the digital age, we have the tls t cntrl ur different frms f attentin and take advantage f them.
It's nt easy t admit that everything we've learned abut hw t pay attentin means that we've been missing everything else. When a caterpillar(毛虫) pretends t be a snake t keep ff ptential predatrs(捕食者), it shuld prbably expect t be treated like ne. This is exactly what happened in Csta Rica earlier this year, when researchers witnessed a hummingbird defending its nest frm what it interpreted t be a snake, but was actually a caterpillar, which was feeding n a leaf abve the nest.
These caterpillars resemble flat dried leaves as adults. They can expand the tp f their heads t expse a pair f eyespts that discurage ptential predatrs. When disturbed, they raise their heads up and mve frm side t side, increasing the snakelike appearance. In particular they resemble green parrt snakes, knwn t feed n nesting birds.
Hummingbirds have a few styles f flying: visiting flwers, feeding n sme tiny insects, chasing each ther, and mating territry(领土) display flight. Mbbing(围攻) behaviur directed against a threat t their nest is much less cmmn but easy t recgnise if yu knw their flight behaviurs.
The interactin f the caterpillar and the hummingbird tk place in Csta Rica. The cmings and gings f the female hummingbird arund its nest may have disturbed the caterpillar, causing it t expse its eyespts, which in turn caused the hummingbird t defend its nest using what is referred t as “mbbing behaviur” by birds.
The caterpillar was unable t feed during the 26minutes f nearly cntinuus attacks. Mst f the bird's mvements were cautius, but included quick attacks t peck r bite the eyespts.
It was difficult fr either the bird r caterpillar t withdraw frm the standff(僵局), with the hummingbird prtecting its nest and the caterpillar just trying t finish its leafy meal. Eventually the caterpillar gave up n eating and crawled away while still under attack, and the hummingbird cntinued nrmal nesting behaviur.
When birds exhibit this mbbing behaviur targeting snakes' eyes, it ften ends with snakes being killed by repeated bites and pecks near the head. As fr creatures that imitate snakes t prtect themselves frm being eaten, can they in turn prtect themselves? Because the hummingbird's behaviur was typical antisnake behaviur, it can be cnsidered replicable(可复制的)．
Future studies f this behaviur can be cnducted using a tiny, caterpillar rbt. It shuld be remtely cntrlled, light enugh t attach t a leaf r stem, and wireless. Whether yu survive a cardiac arrest may depend, at least in part, n which emergency medical services(EMS) agency shws up t treat yu, a new study suggests.
Researchers fund a wide variatin in cardiac arrest survival rates depending n which EMS agency prvided initial treatment, accrding t the study published in JAMA Cardilgy. The dds f surviving t hspital discharge(出院) culd vary by mre than 50 percent fr tw similar patients treated by tw randmly selected EMS agencies.“We fund large utcme variatins between EMS agencies that cme after a cardiac arrest even after adjusting fr many factrs，” said lead authr Masashi Okub, an instructr f emergency medicine at the University f Pittsburgh.
The study did nt reveal why sme EMS agencies did better than thers, hwever.“We need t determine in future research what are the underlying factrs，” Okub said.
Cardiac arrest “is the abrupt lss f heart functin, and if apprpriate steps are nt taken immediately, it mst ften is fatal，” explained Gregg Fnarw, a prfessr f cardivascular medicine and science at the David Geffen Schl f Medicine at the University f Califrnia at Ls Angeles. He als is cdirectr f the UCLA Preventive Cardilgy Prgramme.“Each year in the United States, mre than 350，000 cardiac arrests ccur utside the hspital setting.”
Altgether, the researchers studied 43，656 patients treated frm 2011 t 2015 by 112 EMS agencies. When they lked at hw many patients survived lng enugh t be discharged frm the hspital, variatins amng agencies were quite large: the wrst perfrming agency had 0 survivrs ut f 36 patients treated, r 0 percent, as cmpared with 66 survivrs ut f 228 patients treated, r nearly 30 percent, fr the bestperfrming agency.
The pattern was similar when it came t recvery f functin by the time a patient was discharged frm the hspital. The wrst perfrming agency in this categry had favurable functinal recvery in 0 ut f 87 patients, while the best had favurable functinal recvery in 11 ut f 54 patients, r 20 percent.
“These findings suggest there may be imprtant differences in the quality f resuscitatin effrts amng different EMS agencies，” Fnarw said in an email.
Als, he said, “Mre laypersn interventins(非正式人员干预) such as timely CPR (cardipulmnary resuscitatin 心肺复苏术) and mre EMS persnnel respnding t cardiac arrest patients were related t better utcmes.”
“These findings suggest that disseminatin f best practices and use f frmal quality imprvement prgrammes by cmmunitybased EMS agencies may help t imprve quality and utcmes in cardiac arrest，” he said. Can anything be dne in the meantime?
Yes, said Fnarw, wh was nt invlved in the new research. “When perfrmed prmptly and prperly, CPR can markedly imprve the chance f survival fr smene having an utfhspital cardiac arrest，” he said. “The best advice that might save lives f lved nes if a cardiac arrest ccurs is t learn CPR. Anyne can and everyne shuld learn CPR.”

Five r six years ag, I attended a lecture n the science f attentin. A prfessr wh cnducts research ver in the medical schl was talking abut attentin blindness, the basic feature f the human brain that, when we cncentrate n ne task, causes us t miss just abut everything else. Because we can't see what we can't see, ur lecturer was determined t catch us in the act. He had us watch a vide f six peple tssing(投掷) basketballs back and frth, three in white shirts and three in black, and ur task was t keep track nly f the tsses amng the peple in white. The tape rlled, and everyne began cunting.

She (we later learned a female student was in the grilla suit) stared at the camera, beat her chest with her fist, and then went away while they cntinued passing the balls.

I raised my hand and was surprised t discver I was the nly persn at my table and ne f nly three r fur in the large rm t d s. He'd set us up, trapping us in ur wn attentin blindness. Yes, there had been a trick, but he wasn't the ne wh had played it n us. By cncentrating s hard n cunting, we had managed t miss the grilla in the midst.
Attentin blindness is the fundamental rganising principle f the brain, and I believe that it presents us with a great pprtunity. My take is different frm that f many neurscientists: Where they see the shrtcmings f the individual, I sense an pprtunity fr cperatin. Frtunately, given the interactive(互动的) nature f mst f ur lives in the digital age, we have the tls t cntrl ur different frms f attentin and take advantage f them.
It's nt easy t admit that everything we've learned abut hw t pay attentin means that we've been missing everything else. It's nt easy fr us lgical, intelligent, cnfident types t admit that the very key t ur success—ur ability t discver a prblem and slve it, an achievement btained in all thse years in schl and beynd—may be exactly what limits us. Researchers fund a wide variatin in cardiac arrest survival rates depending n which EMS agency prvided initial treatment, accrding t the study published in JAMA Cardilgy. The pattern was similar when it came t recvery f functin by the time a patient was discharged frm the hspital. The wrst perfrming agency in this categry had favurable functinal recvery in 0 ut f 87 patients, while the best had favurable functinal recvery in 11 ut f 54 patients, r 20 percent.
“These findings suggest there may be imprtant differences in the quality f resuscitatin effrts amng different EMS agencies，” Fnarw said in an email.
