When I was a little girl, my parents read bed time stories to my sister and me every night. It is one of my favourite childhood memories.
My sister and I had many books. As I grew older, I enjoyed staying in my father’s “library” and would read for hours each day. To make me play with friends outside like other kids, my parents would have to take books away from me.
I see reading as an important part of my everyday life, not just a hobby on which I can spend my free time. Reading opens up a whole new world to me, which includes lots of new ideas and rich knowledge.
Through reading, I’ve become a better learner.
Although I enjoy communicating with people, I’m an introverted person and really need my own time. Last year, I had several experiences that made me begin to feel worried about my shyness, and I felt that it would make me lose many chances. Around that time, I read Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. This book helped me understand myself better. And I’m not afraid to be myself now.
Charlie Jones says, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I’ve met great people and travelled around the world—all from my chair or bed with a book in my hands.
1.What does the writer think of reading?
A.A good way to learn new things. B.A favourite hobby in her free time.
C.An activity that makes her different. D.A bridge between her friends and herself.

3.How has reading helped the writer?

C.By changing her into an organised girl. D.By encouraging (鼓励) her to change herself.
4.From Charlie Jones’ words, we can know that ________.
A.one person shouldn’t read the same books
B.making friends is as important as reading
C.books can help people grow into better ones
D.people should read more books in 5 years

Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. Simon smiled and shook his head. He hardly listened in class. Talking was so much better. He just wanted to be heard.
That evening, Simon felt a little bit sick. His throat really hurt. He had ice cream and hot chocolate to make it feel better. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say “Good morning”, nothing came out. “Honey, you’ve lost your voice,” said his mom. “Can I stay home?” He tried to ask, but words didn’t come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and pronounced him good to go to school, even if he couldn’t talk. How awful!
When his classmates talked to him at school, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang, almost everyone was looking at him as if he had grown a third eye. Simon sat in class, watching others talk to each other in groups. In Maths class, he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided to try to pay attention.
You know what? It wasn’t that bad. He could easily finish his homework that night. It gave him extra game time because his work was all done. The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.

(2022秋·江苏苏州·九年级苏州中学校考期中)One day I went to a store with a list. “Excuse me,” I said. A lady with glasses looked up, saying, “I’m Miss Bee. Come closer and let me look at you. I want to be able to describe you to the police if something is missing from the store. ”
“I’m only a little girl, not a thief (小偷)!” I was surprised.
“But I think you’re potential (有可能的) ,” she said.
“I need these,” I said, holding up my list.
“So what? I am not a person who works for you. Go to get them. ” she said.
The store was a puzzle to me. It took me two hours to find everything on the list. “That packet of beans is only 29 cents, but you asked me for 35 cents. ” I corrected her. She didn’t seem unhappy, just looked at me over her glasses.
The following summer I visited Miss Bee some times a week. She always found ways to fool me. By the end of the summer the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes.
One morning I was to get a packet of chocolate. “Miss Potential, what did you learn this summer?” she said. “That you’re a meanie (刻薄鬼)!” I answered angrily. But she laughed, “Well, I believe my job is to teach every child I meet life lessons to help them. When you get older, you’ll be glad our paths crossed!” Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! It was absurd.
Until one day my daughter said, “Could you finish my math problems for me?” “How will you ever learn to do it yourself if I do it for you?” I said. Suddenly, I was back at that store where I had learned the hard way to check my bill. Now I have known what Miss Bee did for me. She is my good teacher.

(2022秋·江苏·九年级统考期中)I gave the young man I had saved bread, raisins (葡萄干) and water. After his run and hiking to the cave, he was tired out. I showed him a pallet (草垫子) and a blanket and he fell quickly asleep.
As I studied him, I guessed his age at around twenty-six. He was tall with straight, strong arms and legs. The young man slept for only about a half hour before pulling himself out of the cave. Again he made gestures to show that he was grateful to me.
We communicated primarily by gestures at first. Soon my new servant showed himself much better at learning my language than I was at learning this. I called him Friday, for it was on Friday that I saved him. He quickly learned “yes” and “no” and the names for different items.
We spent a full day at the cave, then returned to the beach to see if his wild men remained.
They had gone. Over time, Friday told me that when two tribes (部落) went to war, the victor always took away the bravest soldiers of the enemy tribe. They even ate him to get the ferocity (残暴) and courage of the soldiers. I felt sick after hearing this, it sounded more than a little awful to me. However, Friday felt it was as natural as breathing.

The list for the sixth-grade basketball team was announced online. I was a little worried because I knew how much my 12-year-old son wanted to make the team.
I read the list of 13 names for a few minutes. Finally, I had to tell myself that my son wasn’t among the players who were allowed to continue playing. I felt sad. I wished it would be about victory. Like every parent, I love to say, “You did it!”
Instead, I had to give my son a speech to comfort my son, which was a lot less exciting, but probably more important. It was not really a speech, but a further discussion about spirit, courage and not giving up. Although it was painful for me to see myself so disappointed (失望), I needed to keep my own feelings in check. Sure, I wanted to call the coach to say he made a big mistake, but I would not. Nor would I let my son know that I thought it unfair Instead, I put my own feelings aside and let my son have a safe place to calm down his own moods. And when he was done, I needed to encourage him to continue to improve skills. That day was a loss, but the only way to get another was to put on his trainers and get on the basketball court again.
My son is 15 years old now. And, after being cut from the team for three years in a row (连续地), he got to see his name on the list for the high school team. Last week, my husband and I watched him play in his first game. The smile on his face when he made his first shot in is something I will never forget. The world has many refugees (难民), but we usually hear little about their lives. This year’s Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah, is helping people know more about their stories.
Gurnah’s works are mainly about the impact of colonialism (殖民主义的影响) and the experiences of refugees, who leave their countries to stay safe or find a better life. “These are things that are with us every day. People are dying, people are being hurt around the world—we must deal with these problems in the most kind way,” said Gurnah.
In fact, this problem is very close to his own heart. When he was just 18, Gurnah was forced to leave his home country as a refugee. He moved to England and soon started writing novels there.
Aged 73, Gurnah has written 10 novels and a number of short stories. In 1994, Gurnah wrote Paradise (《天堂》), one of his best-known novels. It’s about a boy in Africa called Yusuf, who grew up during World War I. Yusuf was sold by his father to a traveling trader to pay a debt (债务). As he traveled, Yusuf saw war, disease and child slavery. The name of the book is ironic (讽刺的), because although the scenery of Africa is beautiful, what happens in the story there is the opposite.

As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof and a sound downstairs. It was Santa Claus, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to the stairs. He hoped to take a look at the old man before Santa left for his next stop.

(2021秋·江苏宿迁·九年级统考期中)It’s half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair and eyelashes, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved in closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his muscular arms and chest, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off(回报)!
But suddenly, the smile froze on his lips. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet, six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? At five foot six he was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from? He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old photos in the family album, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle. Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname for him—Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone. Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else on the team—and, like a battery-charged rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.

(2021秋·江苏淮安·九年级统考期中)I was 15 months old, a happy carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. A piece of glass cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured sightless (失明的), cloudy gray eye lived on with me. Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (尴尬的) questions. Whenever kids played games, I was always the “monster (怪物)”. I was always imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet Mom would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” I began to rely on that saying. As a child, I thought Mom meant, “Be careful or you will fall down or bump (碰撞) into something because you are not looking.”

(2021秋·江苏南京·九年级统考期中)The world has lost a great translator. Xu Yuanchong, one of the world’s most famous Chinese translators, who won the Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature(北极光杰出文学翻译奖) in 2014, died at the age of 100 on June 17, 2021.
Xu devoted himself to translation for more than 60 years. He published more than 100 translated novels, anthologies(选集) and plays in Chinese, English and French, reaching millions of readers around the world.

(2021秋·江苏扬州·九年级统考期中)I am Greek, and my family go to Greece every summer. Uncle Spyro and Aunt Aspa lived about 45 minutes outside of Athens. Every summer when we travelled to Greece, we would spend a couple of days with them.
I remember all the fun things we would do there. We would shake almonds (杏仁) off of the branches of Uncle Spyro’s almond trees. Using his strong arms, he would break the shells off, and present us with the shiny white nut. With Aunt Aspa, we would pick lemons off her lemon trees and carry them inside the small house with the help of Uncle Spyro. Drinking the fresh lemonade and eating the delicious almonds, we would sit on the porch and talk. Uncle Spyro and Aunt Aspa didn’t speak English, and my Greek wasn’t and still isn’t perfect. I do not know how this really happened, one fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter(木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself: “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say: “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” What a surprise!
He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one!
He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look around the street and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head “There may be something wrong with my ears.” “Well, well—to work once more.” He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.

He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes— nothing. “Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.

Cast of Characters: Narrator, Kayla, Ms Lee, Zack
Narrator: On a sunny day in, southern Texas, Ms Lee’s students gathered in the school playground.
Ms Lee: Tomorrow is the day of the sidewalk (人行道) chalk-art festival. The principal has allowed us to practise our wet-chalk drawing on the playground sidewalk, which will be our studio. Remember, whenever you want to draw on a sidewalk, always ask an adult in charge for permission before you draw. Now let’s review the steps of wet-chalk drawing. What do we do first?
Narrator: As the students told her the steps in order, Ms Lee wrote them on a large pad of paper. When she finished writing, she pulled the paper off the pad and displayed the directions so everyone could read them. Then, the students chose and soaked (浸湿) their pieces of chalk. Meanwhile, Kayla and Zack planned their drawing.
Kayla: Let’s draw a jungle feast. Parrots can be eating all kinds of fruit.
Zack: I’ll draw a model train carrying food to the birds.
Narrator: The students removed their pieces of chalk from the water and drew. As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water. He and Kayla watched water streak across their drawing.
Zack: Our drawing is ruined (毁坏)!
Kayla: Don’t be so worried! Quick, mix the water and the chalk together! Now let’s use more chalk and smear (涂抹) it around.
Narrator: Kayla and Zack worked quickly. The smeared colours looked glorious, like rich, thick frosting on a cake.
Ms Lee: That looks great! That’s a special method you’re using, kids. Are you two interested in taking part in the chalk-art festival tomorrow? The timetable for the festival says that drawing starts at 9:00 a. m.

根据文中“I remember all the fun things we would do there. We would shake almonds (杏仁) off of the branches of Uncle Spyro’s almond trees…Drinking the fresh lemonade and eating the delicious almonds, we would sit on the porch and talk.”
根据文中“But just in the late spring of 2010, we found out that Uncle Spyro was in the hospital shortly before we left for Greece. My mother, Alethea, and I wanted to see him. But he passed away before we could get there.”
根据文中“We still visit Aunt Aspa and we still pick almonds and lemons. We still drink the fresh lemonade and eat the delicious almonds on the porch. But somehow the lemonade isn’t as fresh, and the almonds aren’t as delicious as before.”
根据上文“But he passed away before we could get there.”

根据“Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard”(请小心!
根据“As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy... What a surprise!”(马斯特罗·切里一看到那块木头,就欣喜若狂……真是惊讶啊)以及“Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide, turned frightened eyes and his tongue hung down on his chin(下巴).”(马斯特罗·切里张大了嘴,惊恐地转过眼睛,舌头垂在下巴上)可知这个男人的感情变化是高兴—惊讶—害怕。故选B。
根据“As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy... What a surprise!”(马斯特罗·切里一看到那块木头,就欣喜若狂);“But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say”(但当他准备给它第一次打击时,他站着不动,举起手臂,因为他听到一个小声音说);“Oh, oh! You hurt me”(哦,哦!

    78.D 79.A 80.D

根据文中“Then he came back into the inn ‘Jim.’ he said. ‘Rum!’ ‘Are you hurt?’ I cried. ‘Rum.’ he repeated. ‘I must get away from here. Rum! Rum!’” 故选A。
根据文中“But he was still alive. Just at that moment Dr Livesey arrived to see my father.”

根据“To improve your reading, you can try the form of readers’ theatre, a formatted script for readers to read aloud.”
根据“As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water. He and Kayla watched water streak across their drawing.” 故选A。
根据Narrator所讲的内容“On a sunny day in...”、“As the students told her the steps...”、“The students removed their pieces of chalk...”和“Kayla and Zack worked quickly...”
根据Ms Lee所讲内容“The principal has allowed us to practise our wet-chalk drawing on the playground sidewalk...”,Kayla和Zack分别讲的内容“Let’s draw a jungle feast.”和“I’ll draw a model train carrying food to the birds.”,Narrator所讲内容“As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water.”,以及Ms Lee最后所讲内容“That looks great! That’s a special method you’re using, kids.”
根据Kayla所讲内容“Don’t be so worried! Quick, mix the water and the chalk together! Now let’s use more chalk and smear (涂抹) it around.”和Ms Lee所讲内容“That’s a special method you’re using, kids.”
    86.C 87.D 88.A 89.B 90.C

根据“ I washed my hands and face, to do the greater honor to his gentility, and we walked to our house, which I think I must now call it. ”可知我洗了手和脸,为了更尊重他的绅士风度,我们走到我们的房子,我想我现在必须称之为我们的房子。可以推断出那天晚上我将住在Micawber先生的家里。故选C。
87.词义猜测题。根据“whether it is possible to bring him through them, I don’t know.”
根据“This baby was one of twins. ”可知这个婴儿是双胞胎中的一个。和“There were two other children: Master Micawber, aged about four, and Miss Micawber, aged about three. ”还有另外两个孩子:四岁左右的Master Micawber和三岁左右的Miss Micawber。可推断出Micawber一家至少有四个孩子。故选A。
根据“Before I married, when I lived with papa and mama, I should never find it necessary to rent my house. ”和“When I lived at home with papa and mama, I really hardly understood what the word meant”可推断出Micawber太太两次提到她的父母,说明她怀念过去和他们在一起的舒适生活。故选B。
根据“But Mr Micawber is in difficulties, so all personal feelings must give way.”
