    A Little Life

    by Hanya Yanagihara

    Publisher: Doubleday

A Little Life follows four university friends, Jude, Willem, JB and Malcolm, who start their adult lives in New York City after graduating from a famous New England college. They attend parties, go on dates and gain professional success.

What sets this novel apart is that Yanagihara explores larger issues through her work.

As the story unfolds, Jude's mysterious and painful past comes into view. When Jude's friends try to help him, they start to realize the limits of love.

Yanagihara rids the novel of any great events and important figures in New York. This allows readers to make close connections with the characters' emotional lives.

    Between the World and Me

    by Ta-Nehisi Coates

    Publisher: Spiegel & Grau

Ta-Nehisi Coates, a journalist for the Atlantic, explains what it means to be an African-American in the US in his latest book Between the World and Me.

Following the style of James Baldwin's 1963 book The Fire Next Time, Coates addresses the serious racism(种族歧视) in the US.Interestingly, the book is written in the form of an open letter to Coates' 14-year-old son Samori. Through its pages, Coates hopes to prepare Samori for the challenges that young African-Americans face on the street and even in school.

What makes this book stand out is Coates' great writing skill. The language of Between the World and Me, like Coates' journey experiences, is deeply moving, well-expressed, and beautifully encourages personal reflection, the US Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison commented.

For festival goers, each show is a time to experience something different.

The first Fringe Festival was held in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947.That was also the year of the first Edinburgh International Festival. Artists from around the world traveled to Scotland for the Edinburgh International Festival. They performed at arts centers throughout the city. Julianne Brienza founded the Capital Fringe Festival. She went to a school for the performing arts, but now sees herself mainly as an organizer of the festival. Brienza believes that fringe performance art is special and can have a powerful effect.

The Capital Fringe Festival takes place in different locations throughout the D.C.area. Some performances happen in traditional theaters. Others happen in unusual settings like old, empty buildings or stores after business hours are over.

Brienza says the purpose of Fringe Festivals is to explore the limits of art in unique environments. Since 2006, the event has made more than $1.7 million.
