My family lives in Texas.  I was born and brought up in Texas and I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. However, around my second year in the law school, I wanted to make a great change, which was almost unheard of for Texans: I wanted to leave!

I realized this after completing my first-year internship (实习期). I knew I wanted something different and my chance came during the 2011 Super Bowl in Dallas. A snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow and thousands of people were gathered.  I overheard that StubHub, a big company from a great city, San Francisco, was throwing a party next door to my hotel. I thought if I could get an internship, I could leave for the summer and at least see what it was like. Yes, it was a huge leap. I told myself I was ready.

There was just one problem: I wasn't invited to the StubHub party. But you know I'm the type of person who goes for something she wants. Needless to say, I crashed the party and found my way to the president. I kindly introduced myself and then asked if they had a legal internship program. Guess what? They accepted my request to be a legal intern, even though no such program existed.

Although the legal department didn't have a permanent position for me, the experience has shaped my life. Working for a great company in San Francisco, I'm incredibly happy for making my decision to leave Texas.

By leaving Texas, I learned that it is so much more rewarding to try the unfamiliar than to stay in the comfortable. Exploring the unfamiliar is how you'll understand what fits your life. I say, dive in first.

    篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者去达拉斯主动创造机会寻找实习机会的经历及从中得到的感悟。

A.She was accepted as a legal intern.

B.She played in the Super Bowl.

D.She met up with her family.

答案:A 细节理解题。根据第二段的内容和第三段尾句中的“They accepted my request to be a legal intern”可知,2011年在达拉斯,作者成功说服一家旧金山的大公司总裁接受她为一名法律实习生,故A项正确。

I will never forget the day when I met with my classmates. Early in the morning of our first school day, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know yet. I stood up and looked around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!” she told me.

After class we shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized (迷住) listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

At the end of the semester (学期) we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us.

“There is only one secret to staying young. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking round who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously (勇敢地) singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

    篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在大学遇到的老年学友Rose(罗丝),她的乐观向上的精神深深激励着年轻的大学生——永远别放弃梦想。

B.Because she wanted to break the ice.

C.Because she wanted to find a rich husband.

D.Because she wanted to have a college education.

Many high school students consider a college education useless. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.

Schools and universities are the first sources of knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without an education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.

While limited within the walls of the educational institutions, we openly explore other cultures of the world. We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable insights to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and interact with various cultures, broadening our horizons.

When there's a downturn in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished grade school and have limited skills. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.

When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you get to “rub knees” with people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.

A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip, having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.

B.Valuing our own culture much more.

14.By giving the example of a downturn in the economy, what does the author want to show?

B.A good education sometimes means nothing.

C.A good education allows you to keep a high quality of life.

D.A good education means you will not lose your job.

·You are a special person not a clone

The Best Teacher in My Life

In front of  the 5th grade class on the very first day of school,  Mrs Thompon, said that she loved all the students. But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped (瘫倒) in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children. His clothes were messy and he constantly needed a bath. Thompson would actually take delight in making his papers with a red pen, making bold Xs and then putting a “F” at the top of his papers. Even she chose to put Teddy's past records off until last.

However, when she relieved his file, she was in a surprise. Teddy, who was bright with a ready laugh, had done his work neatly and had good manners until his  mother  died of a terminal (晚期的) illness. From then on, he was slowly withdrawn while his father didn't show much interest in him.

By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was  ashamed  of herself. She felt even worse when she found Teddy's Christmas  present, clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag, inside which there was a rhinestone bracelet (水钻手链) with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was onequarter full of perfume. She stifled (藏匿) the  children's laughter  when she exclaimed (大叫) how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing (轻擦) some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy stayed after school that day just long enough to say, “Mrs Thompson, today you smiled just like my mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour.

Since that  very day, Mrs Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The more she  encouraged  him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

A year later, she found a  note  under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was  the best teacher  he ever had in his whole life.

Later she got another letter, saying that he would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. Whether in short  notes  or longer letters, the greetings were always ended with the same sentence—You were  the best teacher  I ever had in my whole life.

At the wedding ceremony, they hugged each other. Teddy whispered in Mrs Thompson's ear, “Thank you for believing in me and showing me that I could make a difference.” Mrs Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until the very day I received your present.”
