When a child is told he is “uncool”, it can be very painful. He may say he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are different from cool on purpose(故意地). But these are simple ways to deal with sadness by pretending it’s not there.
Helping a child feel better in school had to be careful. If you say, “Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn’t matter!” Children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, “I’m going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school.”
If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class things. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.
There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider “super” .When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.
1.A child who has been informed of being “ uncool” may _________ .
A.care nothing about it B.do something uncool on purpose
C.develop a sense of anger D.pretend to get hurt very much
2.A teacher can help an unpopular child by _____________ .
A.seeing the child as the teacher’s favorite B.asking the child to do something for partners
C.forcing other children to make friends with the child D.offering the child chances to show his good qualities
3.How can parents help their child fit in better?
A.By taking him to have picnics in the park. B.By being kind to his schoolmates.
C.By forcing him to invite friends home. D.By cooking delicious food for him.
4.Which is the best title of the text?
A.How an Unpopular Child can be Helped B.Why Some Children are Unpopular
C.What Good Qualities Unpopular Children Have D.Who Care about Unpopular Children

Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neuron(运动神经元)disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and change them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neuron disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor problems are expensive, not strong under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration(校对) and abundant, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology. “To change the situation…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids(格) of letters, which each match a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
5.Which is necessary to install GazeSpeak for use according to the passage?
A.a smartphone with a camera. B.a smartphone with re-calibration system.
C.a smartphone with a sticker on the back. D.a smartphone connected with other setups.
6.Compared with the disadvantages current input system for ALS sufferers have, GazeSpeak will be_________.
A.low-cost, strong in system, easy to take with users B.affordable, lightweight, environmentally friendly
C.easy to operate, movable, able to check itself D.available under strong light, rich in resources, inexpensive
7.The most possible design of the grids will be________.
    A. B.
    C. D.
8.What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To advertise a new app. B.To call for attention to ALS sufferers.
C.To share the information of an.app. D.To show respect to the programmer of the app.

It’s time to teach kids how to play. Play can teach them important life skills. Their imagination will also be inspired.
    ● Play a game. Dig out your board games. Checkers, chess and Monopoly are all great games.
    ● Hands-on fun. Bring out play dough (橡皮泥). Your children may roll their eyes at this one, but you would be surprised at how they will sit down and keep themselves entertained with it.
    ● Build something. Lego, Lincoln Logs and K’NEX. How many of our kids still have these in the back of their closets? Try building something using toothpicks and connecting them together with glue. As the things you build dry, they become stronger and you can keep them around for a while.
    ● Go outdoors. Outdoor games like marbles and hopscotch not only interest your kids, they will also improve coordination (协调) skills. Too hot or cold out? The garage, basement or kitchen floors will be OK, too.
    ● Become an outdoor artist. Buy a box of colored chalk from the local store and let your kids create their own works on your front or back sidewalks. Take pictures of them for your family album.
Are these new ideas? Of course not. But when our kids are given a choice of any of these “offline” activities or the chance to watch TV or play computer games, what are they going to choose? When you unplug your kids, they will learn how to play again simply because they have nothing else to do. They will find other activities to keep themselves entertained.
    9.According to the passage, K'NEX _________.
A.is a kind of toys children can use to build something B.is a book about how to build things you like
C.can be used to join things together D.can be used to dry things
    10.In the writer's opinion, _________.
A.“offline” activities do more harm than good to kids B.children today have no interest in outdoor games
C.play is a good way to inspire kids' imagination D.few children today are interested in play dough
11.What does the underlined part “unplug your kids” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Give them the chance to do things as they please. B.Make your kids stay away from TVs and computers.
C.Keep your kids away from games or outdoor activities. D.Keep your kids in a quiet and lonely place for a long time.
12.The passage is intended for ________.
    A.children B.parents
    C.teachers D.students

    Subject:Hi!
    Dear Mr.Mallory,
I am writing to tell you my deep disappointment for my experience at Lingua Nova English summer school in the first two weeks of July.I had been thoroughly looking forward to learning English and learning about culture in the UK,but I am afraid that my time at your summer school failed to live up to my expectations.
Your brochure states that the student accommodation is situated "in the heart of Edinburgh".This is misleading as my accommodation was,in fact, situated a good fifty minutes bus ride from the city center in what I can only describe as a less than picturesque part of the suburbs.
In addition, the activity programme did not reflect the fact that we were located in one of Europe's most interesting and historical cities: one evening activity consisted of a walk to a nearby park, another was a trip to a narrow street which was not usually used by cars. Finally,on our one trip into the city center our "guide" readily admitted that she was not from Edinburgh, and had in fact never visited the city before.I had been eagerly expecting a guided tour of Scotland's treasures. In fact,I was left in the city center with no map and told to "check things out" while your employee went shopping in Princes Street. This was a long awaited trip and cost me over two years' hard work and saving.Although I do have positive memories of my trip (my English teachers were knowledgeable and inspiring),the accommodation and activity programme were wholly unsatisfactory.
I would like to get my money back for the accommodation and would really appreciate a reply within the next two weeks.
    Yours sincerely,
    Jovan Gagic
13.Jovan wrote the email to __________.
    A.provide information B.share experiences C.express dissatisfaction D.raise expectations
    14.According to Jovan,the guide __________.
A.organized cultural activities B.failed to perform duties
C.had a good knowledge of the city D.received punishment for bad behavior
15.What effect does Jovan want his email to have on Mr.Mallory?
A.To make him feel sorry. B.To cause him worry.C.To bring him disappointment.D.To get him into trouble.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought . He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie”.
Staring at the red sign“100%” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
    Paragraph 1:
    Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

    9.A10.C11.B12.B
    这是一篇说明文。玩耍可以教给孩子们重要的生活技能。孩子的想象力也会得到激发。文章介绍了家长如何教会孩子们玩耍。
9.推理判断题。由第四段中的“Build something. Lego, Lincoln Logs and K’NEX. How many of our kids still have these in the back of their closets? Try building something using toothpicks and connecting them together with glue(构建一些东西。乐高,林肯积木和K NEX。有多少孩子的衣柜里还放着这个?试着用牙签做一些东西,然后用胶水把它们粘在一起)”的可知,K’NEX应该是和Lego(乐高),Lincoln Logs(林肯原木)一样的可拼装的玩具,孩子们可以把它建成各种各样的东西。故A选项正确。
10.细节理解题。由第一段中的“Play can teach them important life skills. Their imagination will also be inspired(玩耍可以教给孩子们重要的生活技能。孩子的想象力也会得到激发)”可知,作者认为玩耍是鼓舞孩子们想象力的好办法。故C选项正确。

I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled contribution with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’. Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test. “Mr. White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2: Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us.” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
如:look at sb. with surprise/,set a good example for sb.,expressed his thanks to,cannot wait to do等高级词汇;Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. as引导的伴随状语从句。Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us.because引导的原因状语从句等高级句式。
