    The histry f Chinese calligraphy is prbably as lng as that f China itself. Calligraphy is a special categry(范畴) in China’s wrld f fine arts. Thrugh the centuries Chinese characters have changed cnstantly and are mainly divided int five categries tday: the seal script(zhuan shu), fficial script(li shu), regular script(kai shu), running script(xing shu)and cursive script(ca shu).
    Calligraphy invlves a great deal f thery and requires many skills. Amng the mst utstanding calligraphers in ancient China were Wang Xizhi, Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Liu Gngquan, wh are knwn fr pineering their wn styles.
    In writing calligraphy, ne will need a brush, paper, an ink stick and an ink stne, cmmnly referred t as the “Fur Treasures f the Study”. There are different types f brushes. White gat hair, black rabbit hair and yellw weasel hair brushes are the main nes. Accrding t their functin, brushes are classified int three grups: hard, sft and medium. Brush sticks are usually made f bamb, wd, r prcelain(瓷器); ivry r jade sticks are rare and precius.
    The ink stick is a unique pigment(颜料)used fr Chinese traditinal painting and calligraphy. The mst famus ink stick is hui m(Anhui ink stick), made frm pines that grw n Huangshan Muntain in Anhui Prvince. Clean water is needed t grind the ink stick. Press the ink stick hard and rub it lightly, slwly and evenly against the ink slab(平板) t make thick, liquid ink.
    While paper cmes in many varieties, Xuan paper, prduced in Xuanzhu (tday’s Anhui Prvince), is cnsidered the best fr Chinese calligraphy. The paper is sft and fine textured, suitable fr cnveying the artistic expressin f bth Chinese calligraphy and painting. With a gd tensile(张力的) strength and mth-prf (防蛀虫) quality, the paper can be preserved fr a lng time.
    Ink stnes r ink slabs have been classified int three categries: Duan, She and Ta. Features cmmn t all three are hardness and fineness. Althugh the stne is hard and fine, it is nt dry r slippery. Using a hard and smth stne, liquid ink can be prduced easily by rubbing the ink stick against the stne.
    By handling the brush and ink skillfully and carefully, the artist can prduce an infinite variety f calligraphic styles and frms.
