Are there more natural disasters than before? Yes."There is a big rise in the number of natural disasters taking place each year from the late 20th century," studies say. In 1970,about 77 natural disasters were reported. In 2004, however, this number jumped to 348.From 1980 to 2009 there was an 80% rise in the number of disasters about weather conditions. And the money spent on natural disasters between 2001 and 2010 doubled compared to (与…比) that between 1981 and 1990.

Scientists find out that the rise in natural disasters is because of both natural and human activities. Global warming has been increasing (增加) the temperatures of the Earth. This makes different types of storms come more often and more seriously.

With more villages developing into cities and more sea turning into land, more floods will take place. These floods and following disasters make more people get hurt or die. Usually， there are more deaths ( (死亡) in hot vacation areas. With hundreds of thousands of people staying together, storms can take more lives in a shorter period of time.

However, some scientists think it's possible that natural disasters are not becoming larger in number. Our ways of following and recording them are becoming better, so scientists can notice them more often and study them more easily than in the past.

Although the number of natural disasters grows, the good side is that deaths from these disasters have declined a lot. Science and technology helps people know when they will happen and humans can be protected better
