Amphibians (两栖动物) act as an imprtant indicatr species fr healthy envirnments and are a vital part f the fd chain, making up the diet f many ther species. Hwever, amphibian species are disappearing at an alarming rate acrss the glbe due t habitat lss, pllutin, and disease. Becme a citizen scientist with FrgWatch USA, and help save ur frgs!
    Training instructin:
FrgWatch training cvers the imprtance f amphibians in the envirnment. The instructin fcuses n hw t:
    1. mnitr ur lcal frg ppulatin t prtect the species;

I std behind the curtain, my hands shaking. As I listened t the crwd laugh at the hst’s jkes, I just thught why I believed I culd d that. Tw mnths earlier, I had signed up fr imprv(即兴表演) classes at a lcal theater, alng with fur ther graduate students.
When I first heard abut the imprv classes, I was trn. I feared getting n stage and perfrming in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph.D., s it seemed like the perfect pprtunity t imprve my cmmunicatin ability and gain cnfidence.
During ur first class, we learned the key cncept f imprv: “yes, and”. If smene says mnkeys are librarians, fr example, then mnkeys are librarians. We dn’t questin the lgic; we say “yes” and cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng. T d this well, we have t avid secnd-guessing urselves. Smetimes scenes g in unexpected directins. The best imprv happens when perfrmers stay pen t different pssibilities. Over time, I started t enjy ur classes. I als became better at listening and cmmunicating clearly in the mment.
That training was put t gd use when I was giving a lecture abut my science. An audience member surprised me with a questin that didn’t grw ut f the infrmatin I’d presented. Instead f getting cnfused, I used the “yes, and” methd, and it helped me find prper answers. Last year, I came acrss cnfusing data. Instead f getting discuraged, I kept explring the data and ended up discvering a new type f cell—ne that wasn’t behaving as expected. If I hadn’t stayed pen t the pssibility that the results were real, I wuld have missed ut n the mst exciting finding f my Ph.D. s far.

While artificial intelligence (AI) technlgy cntinues t prmte many aspects f human life, it’s nw being applied t aiding the prtectin f giant pandas.
A nature reserve in Nrthwest China’s Gansu prvince has built an AI-enabled vide mnitring system t better prtect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared (红外线的) cameras, the mnitring system helps ensure the health and safety f 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put int peratin mre than tw years ag, and has captured numerus phts and vides f pandas engaging in activities such as eating, resting and fighting fr mates. It prvides scientific data t help us grasp pandas’living cnditins and establish cnservatin strategies. Mre imprtantly, it achieves real-time mnitring f the reserve s that we can discern the threats t the wildlife as early as pssible. After all, the earlier the prblems are fund, the easier they may be slved.
A recent study fund the mnitring system can autmatically recgnize varius wild animals caught in the infrared cameras, allwing researchers t cllect data n giant pandas while staying indrs. It’s shwn that by using the AI-aided system t retain the filed phts f giant pandas, researchers btain a 98% success rate f species recgnitin. Its success rate f recgnizing ther wild animals can tp 80%. In 2021, this mnitring system captured 2,896 phts f giant pandas and ther rare animals and filmed nearly an hur f ftage, shwcasing the reserve’s sund eclgical envirnment as well as a gradual rise in the panda ppulatin there.
Liu Xingming, the head f the reserve’s administratin, said researchers used the system nt nly t bserve the dynamics and health f the giant panda ppulatin but als t learn abut changes in the natural surrundings f their habitat. “The mnitring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent cnservatin f wildlife,” he added. “Hwever, it is expected t be further imprved and ptimized in the near future.”
    8. What des the underlined wrd “discern” mean in paragraph 2?

Seen any unseasnably early daffdils (水仙花) shwing their faces yet? UK spring flwers are pening nearly a mnth earlier than befre the mid-1980s, due t climate change.
That is the cnclusin f a study f nearly 420,000 bservatins f the first flwering date f 406 plants frm a UK citizen science prject called Nature's Calendar. It has recrds dating back t 1753 frm gardeners and naturalists, as well as bdies such as the Ryal Meterlgical Sciety.
Ulf Büntgen at the University f Cambridge and his team fund that plants were pening their flwers 26 days earlier n average in the years after 1986. They picked that year as it was the midpint in the data set — where they had abut the same number f bservatins befre and after. The analysis included recrds f all plants, whatever time f year they flwer, but mst f them (like the daffdils) blm in spring. "It is likely that the influence f climate change will be greater fr spring-flwering plants, fr in spring the usual beginning f warmer temperatures that can cause flwering starts earlier," says a spkespersn fr the Ryal Hrticultural Sciety. There was a bigger advance in the dates f the first blms f smaller plants, with thse less than 20 centimeters high flwering an average f 32 days earlier in the years after 1986.
In any year, flwer pening times are clsely cnnected with the average temperature f the mnths frm January t April. "If it's warmer, it's an earlier beginning. If it's cler, it's a later ne," says Büntgen. The average maximum temperature acrss thse fur mnths rse by 1.1℃, a cnclusin frm cmparing the perid frm 1950 t 1986 with the years after 1986.
“The change culd hurt insects, birds and ther wildlife that have evlved t synchrnize (同步) with the flwering f certain plants,” says Büntgen.
    12. What can we knw abut the study?
    A. It can date back t 1753.
    B. It was based n plentiful data.
    C. It nly cvered spring flwers.
    D. It was cnducted by naturalists.
    13. Why did researchers pick the year 1986?
    A. It was in the middle f the data set.B. It was a memrable year fr Ulf Büntgen.
    C. Flwering was first recrded in 1986.D. Flwers began t blm earlier in this year.
    14. What will be discussed in the fllwing paragraph?
    A. Measures t be taken t stp climate change.
    B. The influences f flwers' early blming.
    C. Creatures' adaptatin t climate change.
    D. The reasns fr flwers' early blming.
    15. Where can we prbably find the text?
    A. In a guidebk.B. In science fictin.
