That’s the questin that University f Tled physicist Sctt Lee psed t his students. Lee says, “I’m always lking fr new and interesting things that will excite the students, s I try and bring these cncepts int the classrm.”
Plenty f ther scientists have been just as fascinated by the bimechanics (生物力学) f dinsaur mvement. Fr example, scientists created a 3D recnstructin f a T-rex tail t calculate that the animal likely mved at just under 3 mph accrding t a paper published in 2021.
Lee pints t the variety f appraches that researchers can use t mdel such predictins. “We have the bnes frm many dinsaurs; with the Dilphsaurus and T-rex, we have essentially cmplete skeletns, he says. “ By lking at mdern animals, yu can get an idea f hw big the muscles were. Then yu can calculate hw big f a frce yu culd apply t the legs f a dinsaur t... mdel hw fast it wuld g.”
Fr many students just starting t learn abut physics, the difference between speed and acceleratin isn’t always intuitive (直观的). “They tend t think f that as being the same thing－if yu accelerate fast, yu’re ging t g fast,” says Lee“. but they’re actually very separate cncepts.”
In his class, Lee wanted t create a situatin where the speeds between tw subjects were rughly the same, but because the acceleratins were different, s was the utcme. They ultimately cncluded that Blt wuld easily utrun Dilphsaurus. leaving it in the dust by tw secnds.
As Lee emphasized t his class the key factr was indeed acceleratin. Fllwing Newtn’s secnd law f mtin, where acceleratin is dependent upn an bject’s mass (质量) and frce, Blt’s smaller size wuld give him an early leg up. That’s the questin that University f Tled physicist Sctt Lee psed t his students. Lee says, “I’m always lking fr new and interesting things that will excite the students, s I try and bring these cncepts int the classrm.”
Plenty f ther scientists have been just as fascinated by the bimechanics (生物力学) f dinsaur mvement. Fr example, scientists created a 3D recnstructin f a T-rex tail t calculate that the animal likely mved at just under 3 mph accrding t a paper published in 2021.
Lee pints t the variety f appraches that researchers can use t mdel such predictins. “We have the bnes frm many dinsaurs; with the Dilphsaurus and T-rex, we have essentially cmplete skeletns, he says. “ By lking at mdern animals, yu can get an idea f hw big the muscles were. Fr many students just starting t learn abut physics, the difference between speed and acceleratin isn’t always intuitive (直观的). “They tend t think f that as being the same thing－if yu accelerate fast, yu’re ging t g fast,” says Lee“. but they’re actually very separate cncepts.”
In his class, Lee wanted t create a situatin where the speeds between tw subjects were rughly the same, but because the acceleratins were different, s was the utcme. They ultimately cncluded that Blt wuld easily utrun Dilphsaurus. leaving it in the dust by tw secnds.
As Lee emphasized t his class the key factr was indeed acceleratin. Fllwing Newtn’s secnd law f mtin, where acceleratin is dependent upn an bject’s mass (质量) and frce, Blt’s smaller size wuld give him an early leg up.
