    in the warm spring sunshine
    放晴了clear up
    木日光浴bathe in the sunshine
a small village off the map
    be dotted with 点缀着
    (一)细节描述之“describe a peaceful scene”
(三)Good setting description for appreciation (佳“景”赏析)

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.

I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I placed my hand on his shoulder and said, “Just participate to the best of your ability. I believe in you.” He looked at me, his eyes widening. “You know you are not special in my eyes, and I am always proud of your strong determination.” I encouraged him with a sincere tone. He moved his lips several times but couldn’t say a word. I just smiled at him. “So do you still decide to give up the running?” “No.” he said, looking back at the running track. “Then go you!” I said. He ran for his warm-up exercise.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race began. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for David with a heart disease. But he ran as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses. As the other runners charged to the finish line, I felt a little nervous, fearing that he would be laughed at. However, classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. Eventually, David made it. As he was announced to win the 18th, I saw his usual toothy smile returned. He eventually proved himself to be a strong-willed man even though he wasn’t the first.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

Para 1. We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2. One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully, I failed to do so for fear that I would hold him back. I just kept nodding when he asked me whether it is ok to do this way or that way. I thought it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my views, so I didn’t want to waste our time to discuss. I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived at the place, and so did he. I just hoped that the presentation day could come earlier.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits. I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr. Henderson’s was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we also learned the significance of teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons can travel farther.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass(超过)anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football. , preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household." My dad's words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Paragraph1:When I brought my paycheck home--it was $ 119--my dad wanted to talk to me.

Paragraph2:I was surprised that my dad allowed me to use the money as I wished.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I brought my paycheck home--it was$119--my dad wanted to talk to me.  Knowing that he would talk about my earnings, I pulled a long face and intended to simply walk past him and slip back to my bedroom. “Come here, son.” Dad exclaimed, wearing an accessible expression. My heart sank. What I had been looking forward to—a dreamy new football outfit would finally give way to family expenses. Reluctantly, I inched forward and submitted the paycheck. However, Dad slid the paycheck back into my hand, saying in a tender voice, “You've grown up. You have every right to decide what to do with the money.”

I was surprised that my dad allowed me to use the money as I wished. My previous desperation was immediately erased by great bills. I stepped closer and hugged him tightly. Just at that moment I noticed his grey hair and stiff neck. Memories of his usual cry of pain on the neck came crowding in. I realized how much he had contributed to the family through his tiring work of being a trucker. Tears began to blur my vision, “Dad, thanks for your hard work these years. I shouldn’t have been so selfish and not willing to contribute my money.” On that day, I began to understand Dad’s world and it seemed that he was also on the way into my world.

    A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’ t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Roars and screams pierced the silence with needle-like shrillness. The noises turned Elli and I pale with horror. I feared that the giant would destroy our whole fence. He roared repeatedly, shattering what was left of the silence. Elli seized this opportunity to take some pictures of the bear. The animal’s noises echoed all around us. We betrayed our feelings by huddling together, shivering with fear. After thoroughly scrutinizing the area, he trotted forward a few steps.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. My heart leaped with joy as I knew we were likely to be saved. Elli used pepper spray again to buy us enough time. But this time the bear became more alert. He regarded us with the merciless necessity of hunger, so we throw all the food we have. He then turned away and started devouring. As we were climbing the rope ladder, Elli prayed like thousand times to show thankfulness of being safe and sound.

    A vacation with my mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother-loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:” You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed upon her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.
Para 1. Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2. A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________

Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Poppy approached with caution, trying not to scare the puppy. Sure enough, it was only moments later that the ball of fur lifted its head out of the box to peek at its new home and its new friend. Mom and Dad watched delightedly as the two made acquaintances. They were glad to see Poppy coming back to her usual self, guiding the little dog on daily walks and even introducing to it her favorite toys.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. Hearing his bags unloaded on the driveway, Poppy’s ears pricked up and suddenly she was on all fours. The boy was greeted with a cheerful high-pitched bark. Then the front door popped open and Poppy darted to his embrace, followed by the little one who licked his fingers fondly. Smiling ever so bright, he called out to his parents, who tugged him in for a long hug. Despite the chill autumn wind, their home was filled with the warmth of love and reunion.

    Passage 1
Whatever life threw at us each year, come Christmas our family had one constant tradition: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us. Watching our sweet dog unwrap gifts always warmed the holiday, which was often a little bittersweet because college, studying abroad, or work commitments often kept my two sisters and me away.
One year, everyone made it home for a Christmas together. I visited from college, Kaci flew in from Arizona, and Kara was back from Ireland. Mom’s jubilance kept her busy baking cookies for us all. Our Christmas season should have been perfect.
It couldn’t feel perfect, though, because Pepper’s health was deteriorating. Her life had already been longer than we expected —she was fourteen —and yet her mind was still sharp. Her enthusiasm for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her spirit. She’d already shown the usual signs of deafness and stiffness. That year, her hips and back legs started giving out on her. We knew we would soon have to make a difficult decision.
It was likely Pepper’s last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she enjoyed it. On Christmas Eve, we gathered around the tree to open an early present. We each took a turn and then called Pepper to open one more. But her tangled legs could not navigate the boxes and shredded wrapping paper on the floor. She stumbled over the obstacles, and soon she disappeared into the next room. She crumpled back to the floor, as out of the way as she could get.
We were heartbroken. Could Pepper even participate in her last Christmas? Pepper stayed on the periphery of all our holiday activities. Throughout the day, we gave gifts but did not feel very giving. We shared stories over cinnamon rolls that tasted bland. We played games by the tree whose twinkles had dimmed.
That evening, Kaci said what we’d all been thinking: “I wish Pepper could have helped open presents this year.” We all put down our mugs of spiced tea. “Maybe she still could,” Kara said. “But there’s none left,” Mom reminded her. Kara jumped up and left the room. We heard her opening drawers and cabinets in the kitchen.

One possible version:
Kara returned with a box of dog biscuits, scissors, a pile of color paper, and a roll of tape. She cut a small section from the paper and wrapped a single dog treat in it. She held it up as if she had just struck gold. “Now there’s a present for her!” I knelt on the floor next to Kara and wrapped another. Kaci and Mom joined in, too. Soon, we had four elegantly wrapped dog biscuits in a row on the floor. we cleared the floor of discarded wrapping paper. “Go get Pepper,” we urged, bouncing eagerly. Mom went into the next room. “You wanna open a present, girl” she coaxed. In a moment, Pepper stuck her head into the room, ears fully perked with anticipation and curiosity. Skidded on stilted legs to the row of presents, she sniffed all four in order and looked back and forth. She d never had such a wide choice before.
Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She nimbly turned the present with her forepaw, just like she was a spry young dog once more. She tugged every last scrap of paper off the dog treat before she chewed it with her customary grace. Our family swelled with glee. Pepper licked the last crumb from the floor. She eyed the remaining three presents, then turned to Mom as if asking, “May I please open another?” “Go ahead, girl!” Mom encouraged. For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the sheer joy of being together. Our family felt whole — not because we were in the same room, city, or country, but because our love bonded us together.

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in the mountains that led to a tiny cabin (小木屋) with no electricity and no running water. She wanted to stay home reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.
“Ready?” Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast. Edun looked out the window and only saw rain, lots of it. “We should go another day,” Edun suggested. “Maybe a hundred years from now.” She worried she would get tired on the hike. She worried about getting bored at the dark cabin. Mom said it was time to stop worrying and get into the car.
Edun’s brother, Will, was waiting in the garage, who wore a camera around his neck. Will was four years older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He’d started hiking when he was two and loved it.
Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn’t like how it felt against her skin.
After about half an hour’s drive, they parked at a trailhead (登山口). The rain had stopped but the ground was still dripping wet. “We’ll be there by afternoon!” Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far away.
Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch—“Fox sparrow!”—then he raced down the trail and was soon out of sight.
Edun rested under a pine tree. “You can’t force me to walk,” Edun said. “You’re right,” said her mom smilingly, standing under the tree, too, “But you will never know what may lie ahead and amaze us.”

Paragraph 1:
Thinking Mom was right, Edun followed her down the trail. They passed a waterfall, tiny yet clear. The trickling of water made Edun feel better. To her amazement, as they walked on, there was always something to look for in the wet green woods: animal tracks, wildflowers, little creeks. Soon they caught up with Will, who eagerly showed them the photos he took of the Fox sparrow resting on a branch. Together they went on, strolling past scratchy bushes, climbing over gray rocks and hiking through dwarf trees. Edun loomed above those little trees, exclaiming, “Look, Mom, I’m a giant.” Unknowingly they had already done most of the climb.
    Paragraph 2:
Twenty minutes later, they saw the cabin. Edun and Will started racing up the hill. Finally, there they were in the small but cozy cabin. Through its window, Edun saw faraway meadows and lakes, and many more mountains, a whole new world emerging before her eyes. That night, everybody stayed up late to see the stars. So many stars clustering up there, Edun proposed, “I need to take a picture of them.” “Click!” The camera froze the moment. Radiant with a smile, Edun approached Mom and hugged her, whispering, “Mom, thank you for having me come!”

Ariana Porter was very excited. Tomorrow will be anew day and a new beginning, well, kind of. Tomorrow Ariana will go to a boarding school! No little sister to share a room with, peace and quiet. She ate her favourite homemade curry for the last time that year. Then, she curled up in her clean bed and shut her eyes. Excited.
The next day, Ariana woke up, jumped into her best clothes and flew downstairs. After a quick breakfast, the whole family lined up and said their goodbyes. Ariana’s little sister tried to hug her, but she shrugged Liliana off. And off she went to boarding school. Happy.
However, when Ariana got there, everyone looked unwelcoming. A teacher showed her to her dorm. It was cold and dark! A few days later, Ariana got several letters. The rainbow one was from her little sister and another from her parents. Ariana couldn’t even be bothered to open them. She just threw them into the main hall’s fireplace when nobody was around.
Every day, Ariana tried to make friends. It was an allgirls school. Unfortunately, she had no luck. She tried to give girls gifts, she tried to be friendly, but they shrugged her off just like she did to her sister. Two months passed trying to find new friends, but without success. Ariana felt more and more lonely. Something was missing in her life. Something indescribable. Something, or maybe someone.
Week after week went by and then, one day, holding yet another batch of mail, Ariana’s heart trembled. She realized what she was painfully missing, her FAMILY. Whenever she was down, whenever she needed help or comfort, they were there for her. Always. This time she opened the little rainbow envelope and smiled. Reading it filled her heart with joy. Ariana couldn’t reply, for the school didn’t allow that, so she decided to hide the letters under her pillow. The pile grew larger and they were so important to her, for the letters gave her the greatest comfort when she was away from home.
Months passed eagerly waiting for the day when the school year ends. No more dorm life and unfriendly girls. Ariana skipped to math class excitedly, but couldn’t concentrate, she dreamed about going home.

Ariana was leaving the dorm when she realized she forgot something important.

Finally it was the day to go home and Ariana started to pack. She was so excited at the thought of seeing her family, whom she had not seen for a long time, especially her cute little sister, that she could not stop packing. At this moment, a feeling of happiness arose spontaneously. She couldn't wait to get out of the dorm, the unfriendly classroom and the girls, and she was so excited to go back home.
Ariana was leaving the dorm when she realized she forgot something important. The piles of letters under her pillow were of great importance to her. Because it was these letters that gave her the confidence and courage to carry on when she was having the toughest time. Every word in the letter was the best encouragement which inspired her not to give up. Edward walked slowly past the school blacktop where his older brother, Leon, was playing basketball with his friends. Leon didn’t notice Edward until he turned to shoot the ball. Leon really loved basketball and was good at it. But Edward was another story.
Edward would beg to play with them but Leon’s friends complained a lot. For some reason, in that last game, Edward’s playing was worse than ever. He couldn’t do anything right. He was completely unable to keep possession of the ball. He missed even the easy rebounds. His dribbling was useless, and none of his throws were anywhere near the basket. Leon had to turn his brother away.
Edward was always a whiz at math. He was so advanced that he already knew how to solve long division problems before he was taught in school. Word problems, even the complicated ones with several steps, were no problem.
One day, Leon’s math teacher, pulled him aside. “ You need to do better, a lot better, or you’re not going to pass this class. There’s a big test coming up. ”
Leon’s heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on math problems and then an hour playing basketball.
“Here is a good one,” Edward said and pointed to a word problem. “ Why don’t you read it?”
Leon looked at the book for several seconds. “ I’m dizzy already!” He exclaimed.
“Do you know what the first step is?” asked Edward, “The first step is to stay cool and focused.” Edward talked Leon through the problem. “Think about what you need to find out. Don’t let the problem trick you.” Step by step, together they figured it out and got the right answer. Leon soon discovered that Edward was really good at helping him.

One possible version:
Soon it was time for basketball practice. Edward held the ball with sweaty hands., standing on the court nervously. “Stay cool and stay focused. Those rules work in basketball, too.” Leon said. “Let’s start from the basics.” With Leon’s patient instructions, Edward started to practice dribbling. At first Edward would get frustrated because he couldn’t remember all the steps. But after attentive practice his performance changed for the better. The next two weeks saw the two brothers inspiring each other and making progress steadily. Edward learned how to shoot, pass and rebound; Leon was able to solve more and more complicated word problems.
The morning of the math test came all too soon for Leon. “Stay cool and focused!” With Edward’s encouraging words echoing in his mind, Leon calmed down and buried himself in the questions. Eventually, he finished the paper with flying colors. The bell ringing, Leon handed in the paper, darted out of the classroom and went to Edward. He invited Edward to play basketball with him after school. At the court, Leon’s friends were amazed by how much Edward had improved. They had so much fun! “That was pretty good basketball for a math whiz,” said Leon as he and Edward headed home. “Just like your math grade! It was a pretty good grade for a basketball all-star.”

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting. What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.

Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting. After a short silence, Eric replied in a firm voice. “I always remember what you said when I was in trouble. You said ‘No one can get you out of trouble but yourself. ’ ” Hearing that, I was speechless and struck by the fact that it was easier to convince others than to convince myself. Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one that accepted online contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have been on my way to becoming an excellent writer. That definitely should be credited to Eric. It was he who enlightened me and helped me regain confidence to face challenges in my life.

Flora and her dad were going to move to a new house. Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the next week, workers would dig up the yard. Where Flora and Papi had grown flowers, the workers would put in a parking lot.
“Our poor flowers,” Flora sighed to herself, looking at the bright purple blooms and soft and green weed coming out of the soil. She sat outside, selling things she didn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a sign that said “Yard Sale”. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her neighbors had come over to have a look.
Papi came out. He held a dish piled high with nuts. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he said. Flora’s dad loved sharing things. Most of all he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora’s sign and winked (眨眼) at the customers gathered around.
“Yard sale? What are you selling yards of? Or meters of?” he asked. “Ribbons? Carpet? Cloth? Where’s your ruler?”
“Not that kind of yard,” joked Mrs. Ciro. “It must be this nice grassy yard we’re standing on that’s for sale.”
“How much for the weed by your sign?” asked Mr. Johnson, joking.
Flora gave no response. She didn’t think their jokes were funny. She felt extremely in low spirits at the thought that the lovely yard was already sold, and soon their poor flowers and weed would be ruined.” Deader than a doorknob,’ Papi’s papi would say”, she thought to herself bitterly, “What’s worse, the new house doesn’t have any flowers at all.”
With a sigh, Flora dug her heels deep into the grass. But when she felt the soft earth move under her heels, she knew what she could do.
She whispered her clever plan to Papi. He nodded, smiling, and sat down in her seat instead.

Flora fetched old flowerpots and found a trowel to dig with. She walked to the yard, knelt down, and found the right place to shovel. Carefully she dug up chunks of earth that had flowers growing out of them. Then, she gently packed each chunk and more soil in a pot, deciding to carry two inside. They would come along to the new house. The others she lined up near her sign. All the work finished, she came back. “Thanks, Papi,” Flora said with smile, taking her seat again.
Now she was ready for selling the yard and joking with customers. Mr. Johnson was picking some toys from the stand. Mrs. Ciro picked several story books. And the two asked jokingly again, “But how much for the yard?” This time, Flora smiled. Her smile was just like Papi’s. “Zero cents!” she said, “Pick any pot of yard you like!” Hearing this, all the neighbors burst into laughter. “Now our yard can survive,” Flora thought to herself delightedly, “both in my new house and on Apple Street” she added.

May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to Santa Catalina Island for some fishing on their nine-metre pleasure boat, the DC Too. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening.
Soon thick fog rolled in. Louise fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat’s lower deck. Their father’s sharp orders frightened her awake: “Get out of the boat. It’s sinking!” Louise pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Rodriguez. Both girls wore life jackets, but the adults did not. Within seconds, the boat capsized, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air.
After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. Louise watched him disappear into the darkness. A while later, her mother went still. Then her sister died, too.
Pisano and Strasser, both 25, were going on a fishing expedition. The fog was so thick that they couldn’t even see the stern(船尾) of the boat. They decided to try one more spot before going home. Late that afternoon, the fog cleared and the sun started shining. On their return voyage, about 11 kilometres away from Catalina Island, Pisano noticed something yellow floating in the water.
Strasser steered(驾驶) the boat closer and Pisano jumped into the water. He swam toward the figure and grabbed the life jacket. Fortunately, Louise was saved and quickly sent to hospital. The little girl soon recovered, but the search for Louise’s father, sister and mother was in vain.
Louise was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She attended college, got married in 2013 and gave birth to a son. In her late 20s, Louise began to wonder about her rescuers. She even tried to find them but no luck. One day, Louise came across a magazine article featuring Pisano talking about the 1986 rescue.

Realizing Pisano was the very person she was looking for, Louise decided to find him. For a very long time, she had been expecting a chance to meet Pisano and Strasser personally and express her gratitude to her rescuers. Without any delay, she contacted the magazine, asking for the detailed information of Pisano. That evening, Louise finally dialed the number. When there came the voice of Pisano, Louise could feel her heart beating wildly. Though it was about 1,000 kilometers from where Pisano lived, Louise was determined to fly to meet Pisano.
Louise recognized her rescuer the moment she saw Pisano. Taking a deep breath, Louise stepped forward and grasped the hands of Pisano tightly. “I’m Louise”, she said, her voice trembling with excitement and tears rolling down her cheeks. Pisano, now in his sixties, hugged Louise and patted her gently. Amid hugs, tears and surprise, Louise’s dream of finding her rescuers came true and now that she’d reunited with them, she hoped to stay connected forever.

Seeing the world through the eyes of a child is the purest joy that anyone can experience.
It was Sunday and we were late for family dinner. We had just got in the car when I heard June, my six-year-old daughter, shouting, “Go back, Mom! Go back!” “Go back?” I quickly peered into the back seats and noticed her expression was one of pure panic.
“Mom, we have to go back,” she insisted. “Someone needs our help!” As I looked back from the driver’s seat, I saw a messy young man dressed in rags playing his guitar. His brown skinny dog rested next to him near an old cardboard sign, reading,“ Homeless, please help.” My daughter’s innocent eyes fixed on me, I anxiously searched for some cash, only to find the credit cards.
“I’m sorry, sweet heart. But I don’t have any cash”, I said.
“I have some, Mom!” June replied. She opened her little pink unicorn purse and pulled out a five-dollar bill.
“Oh, good. I’ll pay you back when we get home,” I responded with a sigh of relief.
“No, Mom,” she insisted, “I want to give him my money, not yours.”
I drove down the parking-lot, approaching the man, saying, “Excuse me, sir! He cautiously walked toward our car and answered,” Yes, ma’am?
“Here you go, sir.” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her five-dollar bill through the window and explained, “I want you to have this.”
He smiled and hesitatingly asked, “This is your money?”
“Yes! I want you to have this.” she proudly answered.
“Thank you, he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.
I hurriedly drove away. At the traffic lights, I found my younger daughter Scarlett holding two quarters in her tiny hands with tears in eyes.
“Mom, I wanted to give all my money to him. I wanted to help, too” she said, weeping and feeling like she had missed out. I replied, “Sweetheart, it’s only two quarters...” Before I could finish, she interrupted, “Mom, he needs help!” I sighed and drove back to where we saw the man. But what could be found was only the guitar leaning against the wall.

Outside a KFC, we spotted the man talking to an old granny with a walking stick. We were so happy that we ran towards him. Scarlett said, “Where are you? I’m looking for you.” The man responded surprisingly, “Why?” She said, “I want to help you as my elder sister did.” “The old granny wanted to buy food in the KFC, but she had difficulty in walking. So I helped her.” He said. Scarlett said, “You’re so kind. Here is the money that I want to give you.” The man accepted it and said, “Thank you. Hope you have a good day.” Then we waved him goodbye and left for home.

On my seventh birthday, I got a gift from my father, which was a book titled Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians. It was my favorite. I kept it under my pillow and read every page over and over every night enjoying the pictures of colorful animals. Some of the sakes were the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen.
Little did I know that my book would end up saving a life.
Years ago, my family moved into a new house near the woods. My father built a sandbox in our yard. The cat sometimes used the sandbox for a litter box, so my father had to put a plastic cover over it .When I wanted to build sand castles, I had to pull the cover off.
One day before dinner, I ran to the sandbox to build 8 miniature city. I pulled off the plastic cover, and there in the sandbox was a snake. It was lying very sill, all coiled up, and it was beautiful. The snake had rings of color around it. I had seen a picture just like it in my guidebook, and I remembered that it was one of the prettiest snakes in it. It said in the book that the poisonous coral snake looked very much like the harmless king snake, the only difference was in the order of the colors. 1 ran inside to get the guidebook.
“Mom! Mom! There’s a snake in the sandbox!” I yelled. “I have to find out what kind it is!”
Mom came running. “Don’t touch it, Chris! It might be poisonous!”
Dad was at work, so my mother went to get our neighbor, Mr. Cook.
“Mr. Cook!” my mother yelled across the fence, “We have a snake in the sandbox, and it might be poisonous!”
Mr. Cook was retired and lived with his wife in the house on the other side of our back fence. He came running toward the gale with a shovel and tried to kill the snake.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1:
“Wait!” I shouted, waving the guidebook in my hand. “Let me have a check!” I yelled at the top of my throat, and then observed the snake carefully. I really want to keep the little snake alive because I love the little, lovely creature. So cautious I was that I couldn't think anything else, the only sound rang our in my mind was that. “Save it!” I could even felt my heart pounding ever wildly in my chest because I was pretty nervous. Ultimately, I made a judgement “It’s not a poisonous but a harmless snake,” I said with extremely excitement.
    Para. 2:
“So what to do now?” Mr. Cook put down the shovel. Without any doubt that we should let it out, but where? It suddenly dawned on me that king snake prefer warm dry places, which was why the snake in my sand box. “Maybe we can put it in the weeds there always under the sunshine” “Hmm. ok. We’ll do it.” Mr. Cook replied after thinking a while. Finally, Mr. Cook and I brought the harmless snake to the woods and made it back to nature. Fully satisfaction I had, this experience not only gives a chance to see the snake but also let me know the importance of the harmony between people and nature.
