Family rules let everyone in the family know how to behave(). They help family members achieve a balance (平衡) between getting what they want and respecting(尊重)the needs of others.

It's important to ask all members of the family to take part in developing family rules. Children as young as three can help you make the rules and talk about why your family needs them. As children get older, they can play a bigger part in deciding what the rules should be, as well as the punishments for breaking them.

    What to make rules about

Choose the most important things to make rules about. For example, a rule about not hurting each other would be a must for most families.

Every family's rules will be different. You can develop rules about safety, politeness, daily life, respect for each other, and so on.

    How to develop rules

Taking part in discussions about rules won't stop young people from breaking them. But it will help them understand what the rules are and why they're needed.

Many families find it helpful to write down the rules about how family members are expected to behave. Writing them down makes them clear, and can also prevent (预防) arguments about what is or isn't allowed. Sticking (粘贴) the rules on the fridge can help younger children be aware(意识到) of them.

Written rules are also helpful for teenagers. For children of this age, instead of making the rules public by sticking them on the fridge, it's a good idea to keep them somewhere a little more private that still can be seen by them.

( )56. What is the function(作用) of family rules?

    A. They are used to punish children.

    B. They make family members know how to behave.

    C. They help people get what they want.

    D. They help people learn to respect others.

( )57. What can a threeyearold child do?

    A. Help make the rules.

    B. Decide what the rules should be.

    C. Talk about when the family rules are needed.

    D. Decide how people who break the rules should be punished.

( )58. Why is it good to write family rules down?

    A. Because only by writing them down will people follow them.

    B. Because you can stick them on the fridge.

    C. Because it is convenient for children to remember them every day.

    D. Because it can make family member know better what to do or not to do.

( )59. Where can you stick the family rules for teenagers?

    A. On the fridge.   B. On the dinner table.

    C. On the wall of their bedroom.   D. On the sofa in the living room.

( )60. What is the passage mainly talking about?

People say that the family is the first school of life, and parents are a child's first teachers. On October 23, the Law on Family Education Promotion (《家庭教育促进法》) was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. It was carried out on January 1 of 2022.

The law says that parents should be responsible (负责的) for family education. For example, the law prevents parents from placing too much pressure on their children. Parents should carefully plan the time for their children to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure they don't spend too much time on the Internet.

Also, it says that society should provide guidance, support and services for family education. In fact, more than 50 percent of parents said they did not know how to educate their children, according to a survey by AllChina Women's Federation. The law encourages schools to make family education guidance and practice activities. Local governments are asked to help schools and families to better communicate with each other.

The law also gives a special mention to children of migrant workers (外出务工人员) in rural areas. They may be alone when their parents have left to work in cities. It asks local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children's education.
